Joking aside, the 2DS was basically made in response to concerns about the 3D on the 3DS fucking with kids' eyes. Also, once the 3D fad died down, Nintendo probably thought it was cheaper to develop a 2D version of the same console to meet demands. The 3DS was sold partly on its 3D gimmick, but most people were fine turning it off and just liked the 3DS as a handheld N64 with a touch screen

The New 2DS XL is probably due to some concerns about the design of the 2DS as well as the fact that Nintendo is finally starting to get more interested in using the New Nintendo 3DS's greater processing power since Fire Emblem Warriors is going to be a NEW 3DS exclusive. So this might mean that Nintendo sees the New 3DS as pretty much the half-successor to the 3DS kinda like Sony with the PS4 Pro and Microsoft with the Scorpio. It's also probably a hint that Nintendo sees the 3DS as a budget option for those who can't get a Switch and may keep 3DS/2DS production higher in proportion to Switch production.

It's all about incentives. What incentive does the individual have for choosing the 3DS/2DS over the Switch? Well, for one thing it's more readily available either new or used and tends to be cheaper and there's more people playing it. If the Switch was as readily available as the 2DS/3DS, then consumers wouldn't really have much incentive to not just invest in the Switch.

It's not about how many units you produce. It's about how much of a profit you make money off the units you sell in proportion to production costs. It's always better to make more money selling less units than to make less money selling more units. Nintendo didn't even bother to increase production until the first batch of 2million + Switches were confirmed sold out. And so I think Nintendo plans to keep Switch production lower than 3DS production right now because the Switch is making them more money in limited production than mass production. For now, it seems like the 3DS/2DS lineup is their mass production item. You never want two mass produced items like the 3DS & the Switch at the same time, because chances are you're going to lose money on at least one most likely, but if the more powerful console is in limited production and sold at a slightly higher cost relative to its production & shipping cosst while the weaker console is in mass production and sold at a lower cost to consumers relative to its own production and shipping costs compared to the more powerful console, you might make more money in the long run that way. I think Nintendo understands that the Switch as a handheld does have the power to overtake the 3DS, and so is treating them like two handhelds they need to keep out of competition with one another rather than a home console and a complimentary portable.

Sun/Moon had sections of """exploration""", but the only reason anyone seemed to notice how linear it was is because of all the cutscenes. They're all the same.

I drop it constantly, I never turn it off and just leave it attached to the power supply unless I want to use it away from the power plug, and the touchscreen is horribly out of sync due to said droppings, and a manufacturing problem where electrical tape they use internally fucks up the screen, and it has scratches all over the top screen.
And that's just the stuff I've done to it. Thing works perfectly apart from the touchscrren conking out when held at a very specific angle, so I guess they made it well.

They want the 3DS to last until mid next year. They'll need something to sell final units, so Pokemon, Mario and Zelda will be used. I'm thinking Pokemon DPP remake + spinoffs, Mario Maker+ and Zelda Maker, then port them all to the Switch, and chuck in a Sun/Moon port as well.

Finally, a 2DS worth owning for cheaper than the 3DS.

I never bought a N3DS or even a N3DSXL because the only elusive hardware I'd buy one for is Xenoblade Chronicles and I need more than 1 game to validate buying a machine.

If they announce some more N3DS grade exclusives around E3 this year than I'm likely to buy one of these especially since I broke the top off my left circle pad after 3 versions of Monster Hunter.
Otherwise I'm just going to wait for the next actual handheld which I imagine will be the new Switch XL with 1080p resolution like the phone I got 2 years ago.

Seriously, I was thinking of getting one recently when I found out Yoshitaka Murayama was doing the scenario writing for The Alliance Alive; but I can't find a single other game to justify the purchase and CFW is about 20x as complicated as PSP/VITA and more likely to brick the system.

My favorite games so far are
I love them both. The R4I cartridges work in all the ds systems by the way so you won't have to worry about buying games. Metal slug is tried and true and castlevania and mega man can be appealing as well. Overall though its true, the DS has shit titles.

By the way, I bought an R4I cartridge and it works with the 3ds. I can play any .nds file. The system still works fine too. I didn't need to flash firmware or do anything technical besides flash a micro SD card before putting games on it.

The 2DS is mainly cheaper due to not having 2 LCD screens. They just divided a single LCD between the top and bottom. The build is also simpler and requires fewer plastic parts. The New 2DS XL is cheaper due to no 3D screen and the hardware itself being cheaper to produce now. The chips are more than decade old. I guess it is nice that Nintendo doesn't need to push the envelop with hardware. They just have to buy cheap, 5-10 year old parts, stick their logo on it, and make a couple games. Must be nice.

This is horrifying. The old 2DS's screen was bad enough, it was far too large compared to the resolution. Why does anyone think taking a god-awful res and making the screen bigger is a good idea?

The only good things the old 2DS had were its wedge shape being much more comfortable to hold long-term than the clamshell design, and the LR bumpers feeling a bit better than the other 3DS's bumpers. This new 2DS has neither of these things, while still having all of the downsides of an old 2DS. This is the worst way they could have done this.

This is what they should have released as the 2DS years ago, even if it didn't have the new3DS features. Why now? The 3DS is 6 years old at this point with the Switch already out.

A couple console revisions don't bother me, but I agree the amount of revisions within the 3DS's life is absurd.

The DSi also had software exclusives. The Nintendo eShop wasn't as widely used during 7th gen so it didn't really stand out. I preferred how some DS games had DSi features that would just be disabled on a regular DS. If new3DS games did this as well I wouldn't care, but instead it wants a hardware upgrade in the middle of the generation.
This wouldn't be as much of an issue if the Switch could use new3DS features in certain 3DS games like the 3DS could use DSi features in certain DS games, but it looks like that's not happening. I don't even understand why they did this. Short term it does increase sales of the new3DS, but long term it limits the sales of new3DS games due to not all 3DS players upgrading, and no owners of the new console being able to play the (new)3DS games.

The whole business is pretty damn simple:

If both boxes ticked, purchase for ~100 bucks.
There are few realistic scenarios where this shouldn't be the case through natural progress of tech alone, but knowing Nintendo they'll probably still fuck this up and purchase some decade-old ticket vending machine panels for it or some shit.

Yes. The poor resolution might be bad but the 3D is much better than any television, because all TVs in the market have horrible 3D whereas on the 3DS you can see a clear image since it's projected into your eyes.
