I run a Steam curation group based on underrated, offbeat and less known games and I'm trying to get more eyes and input for it, but I hate spam and shilling on here and in general so I'll just post a bunch of under rated games and post the list if anyone happens to ask/care
Also why do some indie games go viral like Undertale and Lisa, but others remain obscure?
Omikron The Nomad Soul- Plenty of bugs and shitty choices but with community fixes installed it becomes playable and it's weird and well written
Carter Sanders
This was an iPhone game that went pretty unnoticed but it's well made and the graphics/art-style are top tier
Dominic Perez
People hated this but I had a blast with it. Bit simple/linear but the art style and writing made it good to explore
Dylan Anderson
Pretty much everything by Wadjet Eye is underrated but this was the one I liked most- old school P&C game but with modern mechanics and not shitty puzzles

Obscure russian 3rd person hack/slash, has that gritty russian attitude.
Matthew Mitchell
I don't know about Lisa, but Undertale had a demo quite a while before it came out that interested furfags (a big fanbase), and the full game had both explicit and implicit non-straight relationships that (a) garnered the attention of the autistic Tumblr fanbase and (b) hit the right chords with modern game "journalism." So it had the benefit of free advertisement from at least two huge fanbases (who, due to their autism, would not fucking shut up about it and shoved it into fucking everything) and got free mentions on plenty of websites who placed it on the top of their "Top 10" lists because of the message it preached.
You see similar cases everywhere. The more important factor is garnering interest from a particular fanbase. Offhand porn example: Breeding Season/Monster Girl Island. Big interest from furries and monstergirl fans. Lots of "indie" games on Patreon/Kickstarter depend on fanbases who have been shafted in recent years and are itching for a fix (see MN9, Yooka-Laylee).
The biggest boon is getting YouTubers on your side. The easiest way to do that is to have a game that can easily be clipped (i.e. having sections that the YouTuber can montage together) e.g. Goat Simulator. A horror game with jump scares and minimal downtime/atmosphere does well, since fans can watch "funny" faces being made and don't have to wait very long betwern faces. Atmospheric horror games usually fare less well because it means fewer reactions from the YouTuber, more time between those reactions, and less content for montage videos they can use to make money.
Colton Stewart
Ahead of its time and good if you can get past the furry thing
Chase Hughes
Is this the work of the one who consorts with beasts?
Nolan Howard
Life is Strange is another good example of this.
Community have been used as marketing for decades but gamers in particular are great for it

why wouldn't you just play Lugaru in Overgrowth now?
Hudson Howard

Want to be a japanese teenager controlling a giant robot with a ps2 controller? There's no better place than R.A.D for that. Fuck you can fly up and ride on the damn thing's shoulder while making up punch space dinos.
Cooper Smith
Another one well ahead of it's time, I can't remember if the second one was any good but this was a blast of a 3PS
Nolan Morris
Stopped reading there. Fuck off.
Cooper Baker
I know people shit on this for not having the perfect and long waited pixel art everyone wanted, but it's a solid puzzle game and I highly recommend it.
David Gutierrez
istrolid is pretty great, and free on steam you design your own ships and then spawn them with the goal of capturing points to increase how much resources you get overtime in order to build even more ships it also has programmable AI so you don't have to micromanage everything, but you can still control them lots of variety in parts and ship designs multiplayer is great, campaign is simple but fun too

A lot of it especially with indie games has to do with how much the developer whores out their product to sites and names, with effort and interest following a polynomial curve, with barely any effect at first, maybe a little push if a gaming site does an article on it, followed by an extreme uptake if any big dick youtube star makes a video about it, which usually gets the ball rolling and motivates everyone else to do a video as well. Another big factor is a demo, Lisa and Undertale both had demos for their products, which made it easy for people to have something to facecam over while talking. The content of the games themselves don't matter too much, there is usually a minimum threshold in how "retro" a product can look before people start complaining, anything that'd look like it came from the snes/genesis usually makes the cut. Appealing to fanbases has already been touched upon, but one addition I want to make is to point out that having your game be related to another major product or its fandom, like that now rebranded pony fighting game was to MLP's fourth series, or Undertale's relation to Homestuck, massively helps to get that initial boost.
Kevin Robinson
Undertale got extremely popular because he released a demo with goatmom and over a couple of years a rabid tumblrfurry fanbase built up and had a severe case of blue balls when it finally came out. So instead of being able to discuss a neat but flawed little indie game we got flooded with furry and skelton porn while having to worry about misgendering a character and turning the discussion into an even bigger pile of shit than it already was.

Has a sequel on the PS2, a prequel on the PS1 and a spinoff on the DS (where each machine has a different control scheme on the lower screen). All in moonrunes of course, because fuck filthy gaijin getting good games.
Kevin Rodriguez
A fun arcade dogfighter game that lets you play as a fucking toy plane fucking up other toy planes, toy bases and typical household items. The atmosphere is amazing, the little bits of humor are great, the sound design is orgasmic at least in my opinion and destroying stuff feels fun as balls.
One of very few games to portray religion as a good thing and not fuck up in the process, basically a God Sim/Sidescroller where you go around as the Almighty in goal of rebuilding civilization and mercifully kick Satan's ass. It is divided into platformer segments and city builder sections. Also, philosophical and religious themes, in a SNES game to add to that.
An action adventure game, and probably one of the best looking and atmospheric ones for the SNES. You explore an unpleasant looking and Gothic world as that one demon from Ghosts and Goblins.
Hunter Howard
Let me paraphrase your OP. Then you proceed to post a handful of games, most of which are known, and fucking Luftrausers of all things. So not only are you incompetent at your stated purpose, you're also ignorant of Rami Ismail. You don't belong here, and you should fuck off back to the Steam Community™.
Kayden Jackson
No, I'd sooner babysit retarded children.
Cooper Gutierrez
Rami the SJW cuck actually makes good games. Thats why people here pirate them Why are you so mad user?
Gabriel Jenkins
Actraiser was a fucking fantastic game. I especially like the little touches, like going into the sky and being able to see your city on the overworld map.
Demon's Crest was the shit as well, but for some reason I've always been more partial to Gargoyle's Quest II.
Ryan Walker

Memetic value.
The stronger a game can appeal to normalfags' sense of nostalgia through pixelshit (whether its actually good pixel art or not), the better its chances of being "sogood voice of a generation ;_;7"
Feels have a strong impact too because then they sperg out about muh lore and talk about it and make stupid fan theories on Tumblr and give it a lot of exposure.
Also furries.
Lincoln Rogers
I will never, fucking understand this. There is only one barely fuckable character and that's Muffet, the rest is absolute trash.
Kevin Hill

Lincoln Reyes
I will get flamed for this (as usual) but Golden Axe: Beast Rider and Hunted: The Demon's Forge are two of my favorite games from last-gen
golden axe doesn't look amazing but it runs 60 fps and it plays so so well it has a similar system to heavenly sword (another underrated game actually, although it has more severe problems than golden axe) and overall it's a great hack & slash
hunted I think reviewed kinda poorly because like RE5 it really only works in co-op BUT as a co-op experience it is SO MUCH FUN you have a big burly dude who is a beast in melee, uses crossbows for sniping, and has some cool magic powers, and then you have a hot elf chick who is primarily an archer but who can also fight in melee with a sword
beast rider is only on consoles sadly but hunted is actually on steam and it's like five bucks or something store.steampowered.com/app/22450/

No idea why. Also an indiegame i would recommend, Freedom Planet. Originally started out as a Sonic clone, although it actually plays like a mix out of Sonic Megaman and the likes.

how weird a small release like this is better than any of ubisofts big titles, they must have their A team working in the wrong sector

After The Cartel, Gunslinger restored my faith in the series. That aesthetic, that gunplay, that story, it was all so cohesive and well-done.
Here's hoping the same team can make an actual, proper, full-fledged CoJ game in the future.

Jackson Bennett
I swear that lasted about a week after release at most, after which it degenerated into a furry containment thread
Elijah Campbell
Alien and Zombie Shooter games, they're stupidly simple and short, but a fuck ton of fun
Camden Garcia
For a David Cage game it's well written. Comparing it to anything else and it's a steaming pile. Go away Cage.
Blake Long
Can confirm, made one of my nightshifts feel so much shorter. Alien Shooter 2 is like a mix of the first game and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Speaking of top-down alien shooting goodness - Alien Syndrome is a long running franchise dating back to the days of arcade. I've only played the PSP version, so that's the one I'm going to recommend. There's also an identical Wii release, a version on PS2, Arcade and a bunch of arcade ports. PSP version feels less arcadey and more story driven, but it doesn't get in the way of gameplay. Inventory, shop, item crafting, weapon upgrades, set bonuses, … all that jam. It has only 2 issues: can be bothersome, but you can adapt with the aimlock I've only gotten through about 2 or 3 levels when I had the chance to play it and it was starting to get samey, but I was playing it defensively, so I may be at fault here, not the game. Easily obtainable at your local game store and by "game store" I mean a rom site
Henry Watson
pic related is somewhat similar to point and click games except its rules are extremely consistent and its set up like a metroidvania, with the neat thing being that if you can figure out how to solve puzzles ahead of time then you can do it completely out of order.
It also has no story bullshit and all of its tutorials are invisible.
Andrew Wood

+1 Ubisoft does that a lot- their B team makes an incredible game out of a dogshit script or budget and because of the marketing team it goes unnoticed for years
If you like these also see: Nation Red, Crimson Tide and in particular- Infested Planet
Easton Taylor
That had better been a brain fart.
Nation Red is just painful to play for me, don't know what it is: how slow it is, how fast you die, how small the fighting area is… Just doesn't sit well with me. And Infested Planet is more of a strategy game. I've been eyeing it for the longest time, but it's not my thing either. Appreciate the suggestions non-the-less, user.
Anybody play The Red Solstace? Looks sort of similar to Infested Planet in terms of gameplay, haven't had a chance to play it.

It was all I had during a Summer family trip with no computer or internets. Only my it and the porated music on my iPhone.
Can't believe how good it was, especially compared to all the garbage thats released and promoter nowadays since the mobile stores are completely flooded, which wasn't so much the case back then.
I'll probably end up buying it and Carnivores since they're being revamped instead of just being mobile ports.

Also I'll check out Carnivores, thanks.
Jaxon Ross
I strongly suggest y'all look into the games made by Ice Pick Lodge. Especially Tension. The weirdest and most immersive game I've played.
Gabriel Flores
If anyone were to mention it they would probably say either Turgor or The Void, not "Tension". Or Typrop, I guess.
That said yes, everyone should play The Void because it defies comparison. It seems like most people who played Pathologic don't move on to play The Void. Pathologic's my favorite game and even I'll admit that The Void is objectively better in a lot of ways.
Camden Thompson
I played it as "Tension". Weird. Still, the game is amazing, in no small part due to how hard it is. Also, it has legitimately spoopy moments that sent chills down my spine.
Jonathan Evans
Nation Red definitely feels cramped and stiff, wish the melee had more meat to it too. I wonder if their new game is any different.

Remote Control Dandy SF is the PS2 sequel, though from what I gather it has little to do with the prequel besides the control scheme.
Remote Control Dandy is the PS1 prequel to both, thought it might be a spiritual prequel to RAD.

Shit was unbalanced but the feeling of your army conquering all of Middle Earth felt amazing.

Aw, I really liked the song. I know it's cheesy angsty-teenage bait, but I can't help but like this sort of music. Let's see, what other games are underrated or underrepresented… I guess Super Trench Attack is a really fun little game. Feels like it was tor straight out of late 90's with its humor and simplistic gameplay. Reminds me of Worms and Sven.
Jose Murphy
Thats quite literally the first foray into mecha media.
Leo Sanders
Multiplayer balance was absolutely fucked since only the US could get remote controlled vehicles. Everyone chose US, rushed remote tech and spammed the map full of vehicles. Good luck defending against 100 RC cars with 8 soldiers.
Jace Murphy
actually i take it back, apparently the mods don't like my swastika anti-fighter/flagship ship nobody else had any problem with it, but nooo, we got to respect those non-existant german players that might get offended
Brandon Wright
Toki Tori 2 is great! Full Bore is a similar puzzle game with the same movement controls (no jumping and falling of edges). Snakebird is another great puzzler, more on the arcade side. Same cute visuals as toki tori but the difficulty ramps up to insane levels before you know it. I want to end with recommending The Witness. While is was (somewhat) overrated in mainstream media I feel like Holla Forums never really gave it a chance eventhough it's a good puzzle game.
Noah Gray
This motherfucker right here. Gameplay is simple but very fun and surprisingly deep, great attention to detail, and atmosphere is amazing.
Apparently there's a sequel being made now, found out while searching for these. Fucking awesome.
Carson Reyes
I shill this shit on here all the time. The production value is surprisingly high for an indie game.
Leo Anderson

I looked this up, they don't look related. RAD is a one shot not related to the main series.
Isaiah Cook
This is a thread for underrated games, which means games that didn't get the praise they deserve. Crimson Shroud got called shit because it was shit. It was correctly rated and therefore doesn't belong. Fuck you.
Dylan Taylor
It was made by the devs Ninja Theory of (FUCK YOU) May Cry fame, so that's to be expected.
My pick is Full Auto 2: Battlelines, also published by Sega. Basically their take on a Twisted Metal game with destructible environments as you tear other cars to shreds with machine guns, grenades, missiles, lasers, what have you in gladiator style fights or in races as you try to outrun and outgun them all the way to 1st place. Fun as fuck online, and I miss when that was still up, at least it still has a local multiplayer mode.
Brody Hill
burst out laughing when I saw this, does anyone have pics of the thread where it was hyped? did the original thread get archived?
Levi Brown
Omikron is one of the most underhated games ever made

CrossCode is a game that I never see discussed, and I think a lot of people are missing out.
Looks/feels/plays like a genuine SNES title, like Seiken Densetsu 3 merged with Phantasy Star and this game is the result. It leaves Early Access and hits full release in a couple weeks, and I'm pretty hype to finish it.
Crimsonland is fucking great. I've been playing that game since 2005, and I was thrilled to see it hit Steam. On that same note, have you played Neon Chrome? Same devs, more twin-stick shoots with a neon cyberpunk aesthetic. It's bretty gud.
This sounds fun as shit. I'll check this out right now.
Oliver Carter
pozzed
Joshua Robinson
There's a reason for that, you fucking faggot. Both tumblr and cancerch are that-a-way.
Parker Taylor
And you're one glorious bastard.
Nathan Adams
We've discussed it before, and the dev is pozzed. In addition he denies copying the MC off of Klein Klan from Macross Frontiert when it's obvious that's where he got her design from.
Cooper Ortiz
I don't follow dev politics, I just play games. Eat shit, kid.
Well, that sucks. I don't really follow dev shit, so I haven't followed the drama. What happened?
Cameron Jenkins
Are you my niggas? Also anyone remember this gem?
Tyler Martin
When you see the word "pozzed" instead of "SJW dev" or "cucked" its from goons, likely cuckchan crossposters too. Anything is pozzed now user, even Shadow Warrior 2. I like how they don't post proof as well, which they actually had some to go on with on Shadow Warrior 2 due to a designated shitting streeter PR faggot, no longer with the company, who in 2013 said some shit about the OG being "Racis", but none of them even provided an archived link.
But its "pozzed" even though the game is made by Polski Orthodox Slavs.
Colton Miller
Freedom Fighters: the logistical questions on game was fuck awesome (ex: destroy a heliport in a part of city and you don't have more problems with choppers) Nuclear Strike: Was fucking cinematographic game with a lot of details on video with a 9/10 mission design in a fucking ps1 game.
Matthew Smith
Toki Tori 2+ had so much polish the guys making it went bankrupt. Excellent game.
The Witness might have been acceptable if it was called "1001 iphone snake puzzles" but its unbearable pretentiousness means it really does deserve to be go in the fucking bin.
Ryan Smith
So, basically pozzed means "I don't like it because reasons". Without any proof.
What a bunch of faggots. Whatever, game's good and I'm hyped to finish it. Preferably before it DOES become known and it becomes the next Undertale or whatever the fuck.
Brayden Baker
yo holy shit lol this thing had jazz rackrabbit and redneck rampage
Robert Morgan
No, it just means Jewed/Degenerate you autist.

I'd say that both heart of darkness and Claw should be at least mentioned in this thread. Platformers and side-scrollers are always fun after all.
Trying it, so far it has been pretty fun.
Adrian James
Tried it, I'm not liking it, which is a real sham. Especially because I bought the fucker, I wanted to thank the devs for giving me a free copy of new Crimsonland on Steam. Feels cluncky, unfinished, unpolished…

I liked the first game but after trying again to play it again a couple of years ago I found it unplayable on my updated comp.

So, still waiting on that proof.
Dylan Reed
Only if you disable the bullshit scripts that buff the AI with massive garrisons and instant-stakes out of fucking nowhere.
Ryan Murphy
It's inferior to the first game but comes with an updated version of the first game (which will probably work on your computer), worth a shot anyway.
Xavier Reed
Duskers is a fairly recent game that oozes atmosphere & tension. The meat of the game is you remote-controlling up to 4 bots in derelict spaceships to recover resources & upgrades while evading threats. The bots can be controlled manually from a top-down perspective or given comands via the console, which you will be using plenty. Headphones recommended. Oh & it's a roguelite, you don't unlock any permanent upgrades though, just restart each time you fail. Screenshot (it's map view) is one of my most memorable moments. I'd amassed a repertoire of bots & routines to deal with a variety of situations, & had nearly finished exploring this derelict when an asteroid I had been warned of collided random points of the ship, blocking off all my bots from recovery.
not really, if you intend to plunder it at least yeah, its basically more of the same
Austin Parker
What did they cut out of the remake? I've never played the original
Christian Turner
It was either the mech or the infestation levels, some stealth passages and also visible tissue damage, ie bloody and brused knuckels and bodies.
Ryan Ward
By infestation do you mean the part where you get your spoopy glowing eyes? Because I remember that part. Same with the mech. although this was the xbox version so there may be differences I don't know
Matthew Barnes
No I mean the bug outbreak. I just looked up the differences and theyre not as big as I remembered.
Then again I never played the butcher bay portion of dark athena so wakarimasen lol

Run of the mill rhythm game with some neat looking cell shaded characters here and there.

These ones I have played and they are good
Lincoln Nguyen
Dark Messiah is the most underrated game of the decade.
It should have gained way more recognition for the genius that is that game.
I really need to replay it in a pure rogue route.
Nicholas Russell
Copy Kitty. Still in early access, but it's got some great content at the moment. Basically a 2D arena fighter, running around platforms defeating all the enemies or whatnot, with the primary gimmick of collecting enemy attacks and combining them into super attacks.
He's not hard at all, but he's very tedious. You have to be extremely consistent in your strategy because he has a gigantic healthbar so you have to really really limit your mistakes to a minimum because beating him will take you a while.
Hard in the legitimate sense would imply something requiring high reflexes, many different strategies required, etc
Kevin Cooper
Best strategy game ever made.
Levi Barnes
lmao
Stronghold Crusader will never be toped
Levi Barnes
Most normalfags haven't even played a game pre-6th gen
Brandon Scott
oh shit its dimentio
Dylan Wilson
This game needed more genocide options and religious conversion. But yes marching the chinese into the middle of the sahara to starve away fighting some buttfucking turks is always funny.
Robert Gonzalez
When you control the market on ammo and guns (80%) you can slaughter away the enemy like the dumb bastards they are.
Its the one thing other strategy games forget, they forget the market control aspect, if you go up against the world supplier of wheat and you have too many people in your country, prepare for a holodormor.
Christian White
pretty neat little first-person horror game. Has a genuinely great atmosphere that benefits from headphones or a decent sound system. I would recommend turning off the souls style "return to body or lose your loot" because it can be frustrating and grindy otherwise but in general, I really recommend giving it a look.
Kevin Young
What about exanima?
I totally recommend this
Adam Stewart
wonder if they'll ever release Sui Generis but it's been almost three years so I wouldn't hold my breath

Isn't Exanima supposed to be the testbed for all the technology Sui Generis is going to use?

all those terms are from redditpol, they all mean "i don't like this wah wah wah pander to me i'm speshul". miserable whiny newfag cunts, obsessed with social media. anyway this thread has been a wealth of free games and I'm grateful for it. lots of stuff for the archive.

Holla Forums holds some blame for this too. I saw that game here weeks before anywhere else, threads about it, discussions on the Sans fight, that sort of thing. Holla Forums fucking LOVED that game for awhile there. You all are gonna bitch and insist you didn't, but god dammit, I was here. I saw.
