It's mental illness, it's that simple. For a more in depth explanation any attraction to another species, or something you can't produce viable offspring with is. We don't exactly know, many people spontaneously lose these feelings over time. When could have been at any time, either while in development in the womb, or while a child or adult. A furry can be fixed if they don't fall too deep into the rabbit hole. It just requires willpower, friends who shame you for being a furry, and enough sense to not grow a persecution complex.
The problem is the community that supports this mentality that this is acceptable, instead of acknowledging that it is a fetish.
