Sapphic kino thread

Did you saw The Moth Diaries? It's not really sapphic, but it's a modern interpretation of the Carmilla novel. Which is kind of shit. I was surprised, there are no reasons, no explanations in it. Probably it was scary in it's own time, but now it's more like "wtf". And it's not too long either, about a 100 pages, so how the fuck do you make a whole series and a movie out of it?

No, it slipped under my radar when it came out. I did buy the book and tried to give that a read (this was before the film was announced I think), but it didn’t resonate with me at the time. Maybe I’ll pick it up again – not sure if I should read the book first, or watch the film first. I do know that Lily Cole is in it though, playing the vampiress.

Well, about the web series and the film… They’ve changed so much that I wouldn’t even consider it an adaptation at all. Only the names remain for the most part, and Carmilla being a bloodsucker of course. Her personality is completely changed though, in the novel she is very charming and sweet, actively trying to seduce Laura, but in the web series she is a too cool for skool, standoffish character at first. Also, the stuff they have added to pad it out is not good tbh.

I guess it was considered eerie back in the day – the idea of a nocturnal predator who feeds on an innocent young girl and disguises itself as a pretty human girl might have given readers chills back in the day. I think ‘Varney the Vampire; or, the Feast of Blood’, which came out before Le Fanu’s ‘Carmilla’, and was published as a serial between 1845 and 1847, might be scarier – I’ve only read the first chapter, but it is quite atmospheric and eerie. I think it was also the first to introduce a lot of the traits now considered standard in vampire stories.

If you want to see a fantastic adaptation of ‘Carmilla’, you should check out ‘The Vampire Lovers’ (1971) by Hammer, starring Ingrid Pitt, Madeline Smith and Peter Cushing. Great Gothic horror with a terrific cast; IMHO it is better than the novel. It was the first film in Hammer’s ‘Karnstein Trilogy’. The sequel, ‘Lust for a Vampire’ (1971) is also good and worth checking out, but skip the third one.
