I was watching a stream of this with no idea what this game was.
It's a pretty shitty game and this thread is only enforcing that opinion. Without even considering that this game is a walking simulator with some barely used platforming and the occasional stealing minigame and just looking at it on the basis of its main character alone.
The main character is retarded, has no sense of responsibility for her actions and plunged her parents into heaps of debt due to attacking other people and going to college, she doesn't really give a shit about her friends or family, as evidenced by her dropping out of college, fucking them over and freeloading off them for the foreseeable future, and constantly bringing up her friends dead parents that the main character forgot died.
Anytime her mother attempts to quiz her on why she dropped out of college she attacks her mother. Anytime her parents talk about the main character getting a job she evades the topic. The main character talks about being in your 50s and being set for money to her friend, who is probably the only semi-decent character in the game by the looks of things, and her friend makes a quip about inviting her to a young socialists internet group, knowing full well the main character has no intention of ever earning or doing anything for herself. Probably not the intended message, but that's how it came across.
There's a small sequence where she steals from a shop, encourages her friend to steal from the shop, then her friend tells her to return the stolen items, and the main character starts monologuing about communist ideas about revolution and justifying how her stealing is a method of sticking it to the man and that the guy working at the counter will one rise up and overthrow the guys at the top, but she's returning the items she stole as it only hurts the guy working at the counter. I get the impression her friend told her that so it would be the only way she'd return the stolen items.
There's another moment where the main character monologues about war and conscription, stating that war is bad, and that if I ever got conscripted I'd wage a guerilla war against my country, not in such clear terms, but I don't know what else you'd call going underground, joining a group that's against war, and blowing up & sabotaging 'war stuff'.
The main character has other such achievements such as feeding a bunch of rats, by stealing food of course, and infests a building with rats.
Everything the character does seems so ill-conceived and poorly thought out, to the point that when she sees someone get kidnapped, and decides to investigate, it seems out of character because it looks as if she might care about others. However she then monologues about how the kidnapper is haunting her dreams and everyone begins to comment on how tired she looks so it appears she's only investigating because it's giving her bad dreams.
Although it's pretty clear that she's very infantile in thinking, when presented with a dismembered arm in the street her only reaction is to poke it with a stick, no disgust, horror or shock. She thinks it's cool. Some user earlier in the thread estimated her mental age to be around 14, but I think that's being overly generous, I think something more like 6 or 8 would be more accurate.

It seems like this game is filled with socialist ideals that seem appealing in theory but fail in reality or apply any amount of critical thinking.
Had I not read the thread and learned that the devs & Holla Forums actually believe these things I would have thought this game & its main character to be a parody of socialist ideas and people.

I liked Undertale, had a brony phase and thought FNAF was a cool idea back when it was this indie game in Desura that came out of nowhere. I get what makes them autistically popular. It tries, but it doesn't have that appeal. Mostly because the game looks like genuine trash, it looks like a walking sim in 2d, just with quirky furries. At least Undertale had gameplay. Undertale had story, but tried to pose gameplay challenges that worked in tandem with the story. Honestly everything feels claustrophobic in A Night in the Woods. You can't really do shit. inb4 people try to spin it as intentional, and reflecting nihilistic futility. "It's bad on purpose." If it didn't work for MGSV, it won't work for hipster garbage trying to be Tumblr's flavor of the month.

The time management also affected the grinding. Socially faffing about had an impact on your abilities and fusions. It has shit you can do other than walk right and mash through text and samey limited forced dialogue options.

You can only "subvert" so much until people realize you're a piece of shit that can't be trusted.

Sometimes there comes a point where you feel tired and want to like something. In the case of this the art is cute, like something you'd see in a childrens book, but everything else is terrible, namely the writing in particular and the gameplay.

Well the streams were fun, all we learned is this game is more disappointing that we thought.

This game reminds me of a number of movies from the early-mid '00s about confused and aimless young adults. They were moody, nostalgic, and suffused with a sense of unreality and disconnect that may have been the result of mental illness, medication for mental illness, or marijuana. *Garden State*, *Orange County* and *American Beauty* are a few examples that I can think of offhand.

I'm sure that's what was influencing the developers, and was why I kept getting an early '00's vibe from the stream.

So this game is actually meta-nostalgic. It's nostalgic for the nostalgia of small town white kids of half a generation ago.

I could go and compare it to previous generations, but really, even the current generation has folks that go out there, do shit, fuck up, learn from it and do better.
If I had to pinpoint a cause for this shit, it's the "everyone wins an award" mentality that lead these people to believe they're unconditionally winners. Then they grew up, had to go live alone and found out you only "win" if you work for it. Which they didn't and so end up feeling like losers.
There's gotta be a reasonable explanation for it, though, right? For instance: "The world is shit, man." or "It's the capitalistic system.". Maybe my favourite: "It's the patriarchy!".

The worst thing about it is that it's honestly mostly really boring and the main character being an awful cunt isn't interesting enough to get past all the wordswordswords and the all around laziness of the plot and artsyle. Anything that would actually be dramatic (like her fight with Bea, or her parents being angry about her dropping out of college, or her mental illness that's never actually shown) just gets drowned out by the overwhelming laziness of the production: The developers don't give a shit so the characters don't either.

The streams were fun but I don't think anyone is going to remember this in a few months, not even the tumblr furries who liked it.

Anyway according to steam spy the game has sold about 28,000 copies, plus or minus 4,779.This does not take into account of the people who pre-ordered it through kickstarter, which is 7,166. Then again some of backers must of chosen the ps4 version since it mentions PS4 keys in their updates on kickstater. Even if one assumes that all the backers chose steam as their version, they definitely made over $USD200,000, which is the funds they got from the kickstarter. I bet they probably made similar numbers on the ps4 as well since console owners are also dumbasses as well.

For the minimal effort they put in this game was an overwhelming financial success. The only physical incentives they made for their kickstarter were some stickers and a magazine, so they're not paying a lot of money for that the way some kickstarted games do.
