Space Engine, which is 100% free, also does space exploration a million times better, the planetary exploration is still very early and bare bones but looks promising.
The game is fucking terrifying though, space is to big and empty for me to handle.

Some people start off making DOS games because it's a stepping stone to learning more about machines. If you had to write your game engine in mode 13h you'd learn quite a bit in comparison to writing your game in OpenGL and having it do most of the work for you.

Firewatch was a mediocre low end walking sim tech demo with a smattering of chat. It doesn't qualify as a game, it winning anything is grounds to ignore it as an awarding body.

I knew nothing of the 'plot' in Firewatch so as soon as the radio woman made her 'jokey conspiracy accidental transmission' early on I instantly took umbrage with her for the remainder of the shitty playthrough and treated her like a prying annoyance and possible spook every time she spoke, all trust vanished in a flash.

It made an already underwhelming walking sim feel alienating as I genuinely didn't know if she was taking the piss or a true wrong-un until the later parts, as a result I absolutely didn't give any kind of fuck about her 'Oh woe is drunk me, lets dig in your manufactured backstory head' prattling on from then on and kept tight lipped. I imagine that's where the paltry, desiccated meat of the title lays but I dodged it like the plague. The story was dull shit anyway.
