So, anons. I've never played a Metal Gear game in my life. Not a one.
Which games would you recommend I play, and in which order? Which games can be skipped and which platform is the best experience for each?
Is there a handy chart that's wrong like every other chart we have I can use? Is date of release the best way to go?
Mason White
I'm going to be extremely unconventional and stay start with the very first game: Metal Gear for the MSX.
Jackson Brown
All of them, chronologically if you want the entire story streamlined or by release date if you want constantly improving graphikks or whatever. Skip all of the spinoffs EXCEPT Metal Gear Rising. That shit is fucking dope and you will have a blast playing it; cyborgs, samurais, philosophy and memes. It doesn't get better than that. Best plat is probably PC/Emulator for most. Yeah, its called Google. It's entirely up to you on how you enjoy story.
Have fun user, and remember, don't fucking skip Metal Gear Rising.
Robert Murphy
Most people say the first three are a must, with peace walker and portable ops being decent optional additions. I never played 4 since I didn't own a PS3, most people say that it's quite a clusterfuck, especially the story. The same is typically said of 5, and while it is true that the story can be quite wonky and the gameplay kind of grindy and repetitive, I still found it quite enjoyable myself, even with its flaws you can still come up with some wacky ass shit to complete missions. Hope the input helps m8.
Leo Carter
Just play MG2 and forget that anything else exist.
Grayson Harris
Start with 5. Ste story is stupid and full of plot holes but the rest of it is great.
Henry Price
Well, I know the story is pretty fucky due to Kojima trying to be a Hollywood director, so I might as well do it by release so I get the same level of enjoyment anger as everyone else had in the MGSV threads. Thanks anons.
I heard one of them, maybe 3, had Monster Hunter quests. Why can't video games be fun again?
Cameron Perez
I expect nothing else from a current year game.
Isn't MG2 the sidescroller that plays like none of the other games?
Evan Brown
The same reason why everything else as far as media is going down the drain. It's because of politics. Everyone wants to put their own little spin on "The way the world works." And, as a result, we keep on ending up with nothing but pretentious bullshit that doesn't do anything except show how far up their own ass the creator(s) are.
Julian Turner
2 had skateboarding, 3 had ape escape, and PW had monster hunter. The HD version of 2 and 3 is missing them though, which sucks. They also removed the nightmare easter egg game in 3.
MG1 and 2 on the MSX2 are classic games. Ghost Babel is also similar. Don't mistake them for the NES game, it has basically nothing to do with the franchise beyond licensing rights.
Nathan Parker
But that's pretty much exactly what Kojima does. He just also remembers to include fun gameplay.
Ryan Hall
Then, it sounds like he's at least doing the one thing that is required of everyone in creating games, he's making the title engaging for the player.
Joseph Phillips
Nevermind, I worked it out. I thought Snake's Revenge was MG2, but it's not, it's Snake's Revenge.
Bentley Hall
All of them. Release order. Rising is also pretty cool. Portable Ops is fanfiction garbage Peace Walker HD is the best
Jordan Phillips
Play some Metal Gear for the MSX (read the plot on some wiki cause the game is boring as fuck with lots of annoying backtracking and stupid game designs).
Second Metal Gear is a massive improvement.
You can dive right into Metal Gear Solid on the PSX (emulate it or play on a PS1/PS2).
Next is MGS 2 and MGS 3, play the Substance and Subsistence versions on the PS2 first (PS2 emu still isn't that great as fanboys want everybody to believe and PS2 are dirt cheap), the PS3 HD versions are great for replays (they have some minor cut content compared top the PS2 versions.
MGS 4 next I guess, haven't played it myself yet.
MGS Peace Walker is fun on a PSP (controls take time to get used to, you'll get familiar with the "Claw Grip") cause it has lots of short and repetitive stuff to do on the go, don't really see myself doing all that stuff sitting at home and playing the HD version.
MGS 5 get the PC version and brace for disappointment (it's like dating a 10/10 girl that promises you wild sex but all you get is a lousy handjob).
As for the spinoffs and others MGS Twin Towers is good for a laugh, MGS Acid is pretty good, Portable Ops are solid and if you are autistic you can also get all the additional VR missions. Metal Gear Rising is fun as fuck.
lol
Let's face it MGS games were good when Konami was good, when Konami went full pachinko the games went to shit as well. Kojima alone means little he needs to be surrounded with a very talented team and supervised by someone who can keep things in check.
Henry Barnes
Portable Ops has a better story than Peace Walker, period. It's a true epilogue to MGS3.
Carter Fisher
Don't bother. The gameplay sucks and the writing is even worse. Go do something else more entertaining or useful.
Lincoln Wood
Play them in release order. MG1 and 2 are optional, but recommended. They come with MGS3 and can be started from the menu. Portable Ops has terrible controls and I personally found it to be a bore. Try it out, maybe you'll like it. Have fun.
MGS4 isn't that bad. The cutscenes aren't as much of a problem as a lack of a game is – if you take them out you end up with a very short game in which you can't even dick around much although the gameplay itself is surprisingly decent. Overall, it's the best film I ever played.
Jordan Cox
You do realise that practically everybody, even the people who like him, claim Kojima's a massive control freak. He controls that nigga, those games are his vision and his alone.
Grayson Sanders
Portable OPs was shite
Oliver Brown
MGS is not particularly political beyond 'Nukes R Bad'. Yes, it includes politics, but there's a gulf of difference between including politics and being political
Jaxson Foster
Metal Gear (MSX) Metal Gear 2 (MSX2) Metal Gear Solid (PSX) Metal Gear Solid 2 HD (PS3) Metal Gear Solid 3 HD (PS3) Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3) Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD (PS3) Metal Gear Rising Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes (PC) Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PC)
Alternatively, don't play the MSX games until MGS3. MGS does a good enough job recapping them.
is the best list. I personally don't like Peace Walker and Metal Gear 1 and 2 are summed up in MGS1 anyway.
Daniel Green
You're missing out, user.
Isaac James
Why are you telling them to miss Peace Walker? Whether you like it or not is irrelevant, its plot is key to understanding large segments of Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain
Cooper Kelly
He didn't do a very convincing job with that if it was his intended message.
Kayden Williams
Wew, I agree that Acid is shite, but Ghost Babel is actually a pretty good game for coming out on GBC.
Cameron Edwards
MGR is the only good Metal Gear game.
Brandon Foster
plz die
Jace Richardson
Vision doesn't count for shit. It's all down to execution. Kojima can't write a song or create a 3D model. There was a time when he could program, but that was decades ago. He also thinks he can write a script, and will suffer this delusion until the day he dies.
Jordan Jones
play V, 1 is old garbage, 2 is antisemitic garbage, 3 is 'hurr le ebil soviets' garbage & 4 is movie garbage.
Logan Taylor
You have opened a very large can of worms. You have my sympathies in advance.
Ryder Jackson
...
Christian Morales
I know you're baiting but I don't even know how you could argue this. There aren't even any Jews in MGS2.
He never programmed. He designed the levels, which he's always done and continues to do. Vision counts for everything. Lack of vision is why so many games these days are absolute shit. You've got big 500 man development teams, all with their own ideas of what a game should be and at 500 men all these people are pushing and pulling in different directions. Then you've got the guy who's supposed to be running the thing who has some idea of what he wants the game to be, but not a strong idea and he lets his development team push and pull him in different directions and what you end up with is at best a jumbled mess of garbage, even before we get to the corporate bullshit like Microtransactions or DLC.
Yes, Kojima can't write a song or create a 3D model. But he controls the people who do. He tells them what he wants and if they give him a song or create a 3D model that he doesn't like, it doesn't go in the game. He's had a lot of success with his collaborators like Yoji Shinkawa (who incidentally is still working with him) but he's made the original MSX2 Metal Gears, Snatcher and Policenauts with almost different teams entirely and those games were still successes.
Dylan Hall
The holocaust didn’t happen, but it will. Reported.
Caleb Brooks
obviously you should start with MGS V because of the PLAY IN RELEASE ORDER YOU FAGGOT
Daniel Reyes
that's not good bait
Logan Hughes
Do in order of story starting with mgs3 ending with mgs4
Jaxson Flores
...
Hunter Morris
then why did so many people reply
Bentley Allen
Because it's so bad it's good
Adrian Brown
and V is unfinished garbage
David Morales
MGR Sunny model never EVER.
Charles Morgan
Just play 3, it's the only good one.
Alexander Cooper
Just play 3. It's far and above the best, and doesn't require previous knowledge of the other games.
Xavier Hughes
Who are enemies in V? Aren't ones of these again, but with 100% more robots?
Watch this video before considering whenever you want to touch the series with that pole.
Juan Sullivan
You didn't miss out on anything good.
Ethan Anderson
The story isn't fucky at all, also how do you know something about a video game series that you claim to have never played before?
Lucas Sullivan
Ah, the pinnacle of stealth gaming.
Carter Reyes
nice bait >>>Holla Forums
Brayden Nelson
There’s zero chance of MGS 3 or 4 ever coming to PC, isn’t there.
Ryan Scott
Just because a game doesn't suck Soviet dick does not make it anti-soviet, Holla Forums.
They're all boring dogshit aside from Revengeance.
Logan Cook
Unrelated?
Landon Price
Only the first 2 are good
John Garcia
even if you choose to give up and not play them, try revengeance it's good as it's own game
Mason Smith
...
Hudson Brooks
i have a B in my CAE at C level the state of education is an interesting thing, isn't it
Jackson Ortiz
Reminder.
Jordan Mitchell
I struggled playing mgs 1 on emulator, dropped it before even ocelot. Then played MGR Revengeance, had fun. Decided to play the main series, but made the terrible mistake of skipping right to 2. Had no idea what was going on the entire time. Don't make my mistake, pay release order starting with mgs 1 on PSX. Go up through 3. If you didnt like 3's gameplay, consider playing 4, but better off dropping the series. Else, go on to 4, PW, and play V if you really fucking loved PW Revengeance is after 4, but it's kind of its own thing. They can all be played on a PS3, or a good PC with the exception of 4 Try to keep from spoiling yourself
James Fisher

Angel Johnson
Is this a joke, or is this actually believed? I hadn't heard Fukushima's name before now, so I wouldn't know.
Lucas Bell
It's a joke, but Yakuza have infiltrated Konami.
Dominic Cox
And you are certain that Yakuza didn't create Konami?
Asher Ward
The Yakuza have ties to every company. It's just a question of how much influence they have.
Seeing as the Yakuza operate Pachinko Casinos as a front for laundering money, and Konami only ever makes Pachinko machines, I'd say they have a lot of influence.
Dylan Jones
Maestro did not need help to make Metal Gear great. Back to cuckchan.
Brayden Stewart
Nigger have you even played the games? Fuck off.
Robert Wright
Sorry Kojimacuck, but you need to go back >>>/reddit/ >>>/cuckchan/
Andrew Martin
Found the Kojicuck.
Dominic Robinson
There's a good reason why Hayter got replaced
John Garcia
Volgin's not rogue, technically. He works for Brezhnev
Soviet Guards Airborne Regiment (40th Army) in Afghanistan Various mercenary groups in Zaire Various child soldiers in Zaire XOF in both those places
Brody Davis
When did it become hip to shit on Kojima? This board has really gone to shit since '14.
Chase Cruz
Yes I know. Companies like (I'm pretty sure it was) Nintendo were actually founded by Yakuza. That's why I was saying that.
Gavin Robinson
I played through MGS3 for the first time last year. As someone who has gone balls deep into traditionalism and commie-hate I wish it was in any way commie-hating. But it really just tries to portray both sides as bad.
Also The Boss was wrong, there is such a thing as an "absolute, timeless enemy".
Joshua Anderson
They blame MGSV being unfinished on Kojima. Nevermind that Konami started obstructing him before the Fox Engine was even fucking finished, keeping members of his team from talking to him, going so far as to physically block him off from the rest of the building, shutting down employees' internet so they couldn't get any work done and making them do custodial work or work in the Pachinko mines if they spoke out about conditions there.
Michael Flores
Peacewalker. 2nd best. Content. Characters. Replay value. Decent multiplayer that still works.
Solid 3. Argubly the best.
Solid 4. The third best Metal gear game, period. You can actually survive without playing the rest.
But out of what's left.
MGS5 is a Mass Effect 3 sized shitshow. MGS2 is plain. Kojima spoke the dubs of Truth. other than that..Meh.
MGS1 needs a re-re-make. The Twin Snakes was retarded and unneeded.
Justin Fisher
...
Daniel Wright
It also has to do with the story being absolute garbage. Though as the first game in the series that I played I still enjoyed it immensely even with all its flaws. MGO being delayed meant I never got into that part of the game though since I completely forgot it was supposed to exist.
Easton Williams
...
Gabriel Rivera
I've got problems with the story, but I wouldn't go as far as to say it's complete garbage. You can't really judge the story seeing as it's so blatantly unfinished. People were talking about how Konami gypped us out of Chapter 3, there's barely even a Chapter 2
Hudson White
Example?
Kayden Jenkins
Then why did it take so many fucking games to do it?
David Reyes
The story;s part of the product dumbass, a product that was clearly unfinished. As a result the story deserves to get shit. It doesn't help that what story is there is already shit.
Daniel Nelson
The fags who try to tear everything good down, console warriors, random political shitposters, and blatant morons who never shut up are killing Holla Forums. They need to return to whatever cancer pit they spawned from.
Nathaniel Robinson
According to Hayter Kojima tried to get rid of him since MGS3. He wanted Kurt Russell to play Naked Snake. Russell said no. Then Kojima tried to replace him again for MGS4. His performance in Peace Walker was probably his worst so with MGSV looking to be his final MGS, Kojima wanted to go all out and finally said 'Fuck Hayter' and replaced him with Kiefer.
Ryan Clark
No it doesn't. You can't judge an unfinished story for the simple reason that you don't know where it's going. What parts of the story did you personally consider to be shit?
Gavin Powell
Nigger, do you realize how stupid you sound right now? That's like saying you can't say a book is poorly written because you didn't know it's going to be shit. Oh, are you saying it was meant to be unfinished? If you're trying apply some subjective "beauty is in the eye of the asshole of the beholder" bullshit you can fuck off my board and go back to >>>/cuckchan/
You Kojicucks are pathetic.
All of it.
Benjamin Wilson
If I ever get to make a real-ass videogame I don't think I could stop myself from making a complete deconstruction of MGS3 where the main character calls out bullshit like "both sides are equally bad". With all the fucking starvation and mass genocide of Christians for being Christian.
Yes you can. You can judge every character, every action and every problem/solution already present in the game and its absolute fucking garbage. Any resolution to the end of the game could not have saved everything that came before it.
I still like the game, its not a bad game. But anyone who likes MGS should be and would be severely disappointed in it.
Lincoln Evans
it starts with J and ends with ew
thats the absolute, timeless enemy
Asher Roberts
Why not just tell him not to sound like a fucking pirate?
Jose Gutierrez
You do know that they have an ADR director who gives Hayter direction right? Kojima can chime in but seeing as he has a million other things to work on, he can't actually direct actors in the booth especially ones not in Japan.
The only known instance of him giving direction to Hayter was during MGS4 where Hayter claimed Kojima told him to act "more Snakey"
Thomas Smith
No it isn't. You're the idiot.
Cameron Garcia
Gas yourself
Xavier Phillips
But they're not absolute and timeless. Man did exist before Judaism, you know
Jacob Ross
My MP4 told me to get fucked so I did a rush job in converting.
Dominic Hill
Nice argument Says the nigger who thinks you can't criticize something because you don't see it's going to be shit. You probably enjoyed unfinished badly written tripe like Mass Effect 3 don't you
Carter Parker
m8 we all know he was fucking jooston in the back officer 24/7
Liam Cooper
We're talking biological jews. Ashkenazi.
Jace Watson
You can, and every explanation for why these things are garbage will inevitably come back to 'because it's unfinished'
I've read things where people complain 'Oh Kojima didn't really develop this idea, or that' or 'He didn't really explain this concept' or 'This character comes out of nowhere or this character disappears without explanation' and the fact is he didn't even get the opportunity to answer some of these criticisms. If these criticisms were present within the context of a completed game, they would be valid
Christopher Perez
Humans had to evolve into Ashkenazi at some point, which would mean there was a point in human history before Ashkenazi, which would mean they're not absolute or timeless.
Easton Jones
This from someone who can't read apparently.
Jason Brown
1. No. 2. If you truly believe so, then let us see empirical proof you Kojima-cocksucking nigger.
Not even gonna bother going into the fact that it has been debunked, whites and blacks being completely different species with no common ancestor and so is likely the case for many other "races" of humans in the world.
And this is all because you wanted to argue based on some retarded technicality that doesn't matter because biology is biology. You didn't even set a direct point in time where the supposed "human race" started existing… There are so many holes in your retarded pozzed little shitpost that it has to be bait. Reported. Go to Holla Forums and /polarchive/ if you want to learn more, you've clearly never been there before.
Gabriel Roberts

Luke Phillips
No, I came here to for the same reason as OP.
Jace Turner
First three are absolutely essential. Good game play, funny jokes, and memorable lines thrown through the games.
Four is pretty much a movie and then Kojima remembered he was supposed to be making a video game so there are random gameplay segments strewn about. Play this if and only if access to a PS3 is not a problem. The story is a literal shit storm of autism, joke characters become serious characters, monkeys are in diapers, NANOMACHINES, also David Hayter sounds like he has throat cancer throughout the entire thing and it pissed me off to no end.
MGS5/Peacewalker are pretty much the same game. Peacewalker is arguably weaker just because its more linear and its bosses are down right awful. MGS5 also have soldierfus and a pretty great soundtrack, so that gives it the edge for sure. Both are complete ass in terms of story.
Emulate MGS1. Buy the HD collection for MGS2/3. Then make up your mind on the rest.
Also, if you haven't played Metal Gear Reveange, play that first. Its well worth it and its short enough that you could get through it in a sitting.
