Super Robot Wars thread

Don't worry, he keeps his head on his shoulders this time

I'm personally in love with V, how about the rest of you? General SRW discussion is welcome too.

Never played them. I'll definitely give them a try on the psp if they have any games for it.

Both parts of Z2, as well as the port/remakes of MX and A are on there, plus the first two Masoukishin spinoff games.

Thanks. I'll try them out.

Hope you enjoy 'em user, probably my favorite series in gaming.

Can also give Alpha Gaiden a try

in other news because vita ties the save and game data to each other I lost my GB3 save. So now I have to rebeat GB 3 and play V

Was just going for PSP stuff, if you're going to play Gaiden though play the original Alpha first at least once through to understand what the situation is.

What fucking ever. I don't like turn based games that aren't Front Missions anyway.
Brave Series complete BD collection when?

@G can be loaded onto a PSP :^)

also @G sorta gives you some exposition to understand what happened last game so it's not like it's a complete loss

I really wanna play these games, but I feel like I'm just too awful at strategy. I tried playing OG1 for the first time in a few weeks and even though I'm only on mission five, I just had no fucking idea what I was doing. How do you git gud at thinking tactically?

Use support attacks and defense, never field straight offensive units, repair and refuel units are a must.

don't blow your load with the best attacks on enemies with huge HP pools, some weaker attacks have a higher crit rate than the best attack

So what, does that just mean don't send out anything without some kind of support capabilities, or am I not understanding this correctly?

No vita or pisspoor so I'm settling with @g for now.

Bonus tip, when in a mission, you can check the objectives in the menu, if you hit right it will usually tell you the battle mastery requirement for the level. Aim for those battle masteries and you will shape up pretty quickly.

Support on a few stronger units is very helpful, personally after my first campaign I started sinking more money into fewer units, mostly weapons.

Basically don't just field all offensive units because then what happens when you run out of ammo and energy as well as your heavy hitters start to lose health.

Also keep an eye out for characters with trust/bless/cheer

OG hands them out like candy and you should exploit them to their fullest.

Actually good late game thing in SRW @G is Mari and Marbet with Donkey bread since it restores SP and from there you cna spam their more helpful senshins

Also Alpha was broken with some of the aura battler units able to feed into each other in an endless SP loop

To be fair, he's only really relevant to use as the OP post of a thread when he actually appears in games like now

Not fucking soon enough.

Still no reason to skip Alpha

Like with any other game, experiment and get a feel for what works with your playstyle and what doesn't - i.e., do you like moving in and attacking quickly, do you prefer to set up formations and wait for the enemy to come to you, etc.

Of course. The best way to enjoy the Alpha series is in order..so don't skip any of the Alpha games.

In other news my retrek through GB3 is going well. I've already got my mid season upgrade ready :^)

Need to get back to SRW V

Wait..Great Battle?

Why not just make a general /m/ vidya thread?

That's what these always end up becoming anyways.

Yeah nah.

He means a thread on Holla Forums for /m/ games you dumb-dumb.
Also that thread you made must be shit, because my thread on /m/ currently has 200+ replies

What he said

There's already several vidya threads on /m/ anyways one a little over a year old and another two years old

Where were you when SRW V became best SRW?

Might get Moon Dwellers this month, but I would miss Crowe from Z2.

Oh shit, seriously? Why?

He comes with a hambrabi though right?

My bravest little Barjoran, the little Zaku that could.

Senshin?

I'm out of order since I started with @G but it makes so many references to shit I saw in OG1 it doesnt feel far off from being in order anyways.

I post occasionally in the full/m/ srw thread.

To violate aliens while not having to worry about an autistic teenager killing him of course.
Of course he has the Hambrabi.

Fucking nice. The only thing better than a Hambrabi is 3 Hambrabis.

You'll probably have to go to GGeneration Genesis for that.

Aren't those specifically dedicated to degenerate robot porn? Thanks but no thanks.

What on Earth are you talking about? I've never even heard of such a thing existing. Perhaps you should show us some examples of what you mean.

You know exactly what I'm talking about.
Fuck off.

I'm confused too, unless it's people fapping to SD Gundams. I do that.

I'm afraid I don't, friend. Frankly, I have doubts that robot porn even exists. I mean, what's so erotic about cold machinery?

Again, I think you need to provide some evidence if you want to be taken seriously.

...

I can provide evidence!

Come on Banpresto, I need my Final Otsuka Special

Yazan and Jerrid in your team? Violator Squad hooo!

...

Well, if you know the story to OG1, it's OK then. I mean, sure OG1 is a mish mash of SRW 2 (that's where the Divine Crusaders are from) and Alpha 1 (ironically, Alpha 1 diverges from 2 by people actually listens to Dr. Zoldark. Granted it's because of the STMC attacks but still)

Though OG1 is before the Balmar wars proper and feels more like a prequel so it definately feels like I missed out on some things in @G since I missed out on the destruction of balmar or whatever triggered the 'fuck you' wave impending doom.

Well, Alpha 1 is moments prior to the Balmar War what with the White Star and fighting Euzzeth Gozzo as the final boss. I don't know how they will adapt Alpha 2's final battle (since if I recall, the final battle there was the final battle of Char's Counterattack except it follows the novel with Char piloting the Nightingale…or if you somehow managed to convince Haman to switch sides, Char's dropping Orphan instead of Axis)

Also, they somewhat removed the Gravity Wave thing in OG too because the OG version of the Excellion (the Hiryu) didn't get blown up.

Oh shit, is cute red headed captain okay?

I said the Hiryu didn't blow up while its Alpha equivalent, the Excellion did blow up (but miraculously survived in one piece in Alpha 3) and that explosion started the gravity wave.

Oh, I was just assuming that whatever equivalent captain it had was also a redhead.

When I started OG I also assumed many of the robots within were direct standins for licensed mechs. Always thought the grungusts were mazingers but @G revealed grungust 1 was the daitarn.

Pic related. Check out Top wo Nerae! when you can, it's solid stuff.

Especially early ones tend to be - Cybaster and friends' whole setting was essentially a stand-in for Dunbine when they couldn't get Dunbine rights until the last minute, and especially in the original designs Hyukkebains were seriously Gundam-esque.

4/F would've had Winggust and Gustlander too.

They shoulda stuck with the gespenst and alteisen designs.

Hyukke predates the Alt.

Even in the 3D games by FromSoft.

Well, the Grungust is half Mazinger (Boosted Knuckle, Eye Laser and Chest Blaster are really just Rocket Punch, Photon Beam and Breast Fire) and half Daitarn 3 (Tank and Jet alt-modes…and a blue haired pilot)

Also the Lions are really just the OG version of the Leos (even down to their status as the easily destroyed generic unit)

Yep.

If you picked him anyway.

Actually, they're closer to the Dragoons from Dragonar, since they fill the Dragoon's role from A's plot in the OGverse.

As mechs that are getting fucked by the enemy?

...

As machines that get mass produced either alongside or more than the Gespenst, as opposed to in the Shadow Mirror's universe where the Gespenst became the de facto standard.

Ah might as well ask. How often do you all replay a SRW game? I've got GBA's OG and OG2, but also the Japanese PSN OG that combines both of those with 3D graphix.

For the GBA games, you might want to replay it to get some of the unlockables you missed the first time round…and to try a different route though for the first playthrough I suggest Ryusei's route because at least you get the SRX while Kyosuke's only get the SRX once.

I honestly never got any use out of the SRX since having 3 units was always better than 1 outside of that one mission specifically designed for using the srx.

Also it was ugly as sin.

I played W at least a dozen times, and the Z2 duology and Masoukishin 2 I've played at least five times over.

Never ever.

I wish I was that dedicated, but that would mean giving up my equally fervent dedication to Musou games.

I wish I had your infinite pool of free time.

To be fair W was back when I was in college. Now I just have time on the train commutes and the like.

We got GoLion, Demonbane and Yamato. Anything is possible. What I want is the rest of the Brave series.
That said Toku is still some of the less likely stuff along with Mub Rub and any other mecha that originates from porn.

this is some deviantart-tier artstyle

I want Braves, Metal Wolf Chaos, Cutie Honey, and Gundam Build Fighters.

Dude, it was the 90's.

And yes, he was Alpha as fuck considering that he's still in school and yet still a ladies man (Seriously, he has the old childhood friend, this mysterious psychic girl and a villainess who can alternate between a child form, a teenage form and an adult form)

nah

Also if you want Build fighters in a Gundam game try Gundam Breaker

I do enjoy Gundam Breaker, but I mean I want the characters and such in SRW. Personally, I think it would be a great excuse to have the original Gundam in again, and have Sei and Reiji somehow fall into that world, and have every dramatic moment get ruined because Sei says everyone's lines before they can say them for themselves or shit like that could also be a good way to do shit like save Ryu or recruit Ral perhaps

And really Build Fighters is a mess on continuity…like hey, Domon, what the hell are you doing out of the Future Century (even funnier when we do see the Kasshu family in original Build Fighters but somehow managed to significantly age come Try) Also, I rather not have the damn Bearrguy in any SRW (The Try-On 3 is OK though)

Trion 3 is the greatest Mobile Suit in history.

Yes it is.

Is this wall you guys were mentioning the one that involves getting stuck with a bunch of pissant units I never wanted in the first place?

...

Which units would those be? I seem to remember the wall in @G showing up at around the same time the Turn A's onii-san did

Nah, I was just complaining about mission 25 where you start with all the girls(who'm ive been neglecting) and that one fag in a zaku I before Elche and Tifa get plotnapped.

I honestly usually save after each mission and when I come across that one I put them in suits that I've got laying around. I usually have Gavin in something like the Hyaku Shiki kai since I have Quattro in the GP-03

Oh yeah that one was kind of a bitch if you weren't prepared for it

Blew my luck and bless loads only for another expensive looking boss to show up, goddamnit.

That's the curse of SRW for ya..

Considering that Build Fighters have a nod to Dragonar..who knows? Maybe there will be an SRX.

Thank god

Also I'm still waiting for the SRW where Akito, Gai, and Tsukumo salvage one of the Getter Dragons from the Shin Dragon wreckage and build Gekigangar 3, and with it's overwhelming power defeat the Martian Successors before they can kidnap Yurika and prevent Prince of Darkness from ever happening.

Or a nice little in-universe explanation that Gekiganger is a fictional account of the Getter Team…fictional to the point that they even got the wrong guy die in story. Or since they like multiversal fuckery so much, they could have Gekiganger, Getter Robo and Geppy X in the same game.

I've never heard of it, but the minute I heard Sasaki Isao's voice, I knew I needed this thing in my life.

Just don't get enough money to pull of crazy shit. I keep resisting the temptation to deploy the entire veritech squadron.

It's a PS1 game. Story wise is an homage to Getter Robo (down to even having Akira Kamiya voicing the Ryoma Nagare-like character) but they share a similarity to Gekiganger…by having the Hayato-like character be the one who dies instead of the Musashi-like character. Even the animation style was meant to evoke the 70's look.

So, uh, I saw some gameplay. It seemed neat. The last time I tried playing a SRW game it was the first one released in NA on a GBA. I did not enjoy myself with that one, maybe I just didn't get it.

Guess the only way to gain any familiarity with any of the characters is to watch all the anime, huh? I saw Full Metal Panic and really enjoyed the first season, also Gundam Wing, Gundam X, and Gundam SEED, but not much else. Might start on Cross Ange in a bit since their arc comes into play early in SRW V.

Not really…when i played SRW for the first time, i didn't know what was going on and got hooked because of the mechs (and character designs). It was until later that I got to know the Mazingers and Getters a lot better.

Yeah, it's sorta weird. The pilots and mecha featured in SRW develop a canon of their own within SRWs.

Yeah, like how in SRW, Tetsuya went from badass ace to "Holy fucking shit, it's Tetsuya Tsurugi!" or how Bright became the defacto captain of almost every SRW game that almost everyone defers to him (safe for Z) or how Domon and Kazuya developed a rivalry with one another. The best part of most SRWs is how they make every character being connected to one another and it doesn't feel weird (exception being Z with the multiversal fuckery and all)

are you a faggot?

They're just valks. Veritech was the name robotech gave em.

No, user..don't torture yourself. Start with Mightgaine.

What does it matter since I need some degree of familiarity with everything? Why does it matter what order one becomes familiar with the subject matter relating to a game they want to play sometime soon? I literally know nothing about any of the series I've had no contact with. If Cross Ange is some shit series I'd have no way of knowing, and judging by the number of UID's in this thread, I'm quite unlikely to be the only one. And even if that was the case, don't you lose something by not understanding at least the majority of the personalities/characters/plots that are involved?

As an example if I wasn't familiar with the majority of the properties involved in Project X Zone, there's no way I'd be able to enjoy playing it for half an hour each workday at lunch, despite how good the animations are. I realize SRW is a more complex game with more mechanics, but the exact same basic systems put in place for the maps and story are in place; talking sections, followed by some tactical movement and combat, and at a predetermined point more enemies and potentially more allies enter the battlefield in and at positions that are unknown to the player, etc.

Unless you're telling me that Cross Ange is the one series of the dozens involved that I shouldn't bother with? In which case I'd need some examples of how and why. I sat through all of the first run of Gundam SEED, it's hard for me to imagine one of the series in SRW V being worse than that.

I will when the damn thing finishes downloading. Looks like one of the better series on the list.

Because Cross Ange is shit. Go watch original Gundam, or Aura Battler Dunbine. Or shit go watch Panzer World Galient, that shit is good.

Don't watch shit a show that's main draw point was "lesbians".

Wait what? I didn't like the show because they were too lazy to even hand draw the mechs and just use CG because lazy gits. What's the deal with the lesbians BS?

That too, entire show was fucking lazy bullshit.

I mean, yes, mecha vs Dragons could've been awesome (I mean, Getter Robo is mecha vs dinosaurs for God's sakes, and later demons and primordial Gods but that's besides the point) but god damn, how lazy can you get with the CG bullshit? It didn't work with Crowds (I refuse to call that show Gatchaman), I didn't work with Linebarrel and CG made Gundam Origins look cheap (and it's not like Gundam hadn't done a CG series before what with MS Igloo and all)

Alrighty then, I'll consider Cross Ange the Stardust Gemini-whatever of PxZ. As for its main draw, the only person who has mentioned lesbians so far is you. My main draw for wanting to try to watch it was to appreciate a great game a little more; I couldn't care less about lesbians or CG. So thanks I guess, in a roundabout way.

Well, if you want the gist of it, I guess the SRW version is usually not as painful as its main source (SRW's been known to actually made even the shittiest story good, look no further than Z's version of SEED Destiny or the Alpha version of NGE)

If you're "trying to understand the game" why not watch shit like Shin Mazinger then, or Zeta Gundam or ZZ Gundam?

Why not Yamato?

Stop trying to cop out that you're going to watch it for the girls. You're not fooling anyone

Though, it does begs the question..which version of Yamato would you watch? The original? The one where everyone died? The one where Earth got fucked? Or the 2199 version?

well you said it yourself
It's Gundam SEED again, since it's the same fucking director, character designer, hell most of the staff is the fucking same, and even the mechanical design copies shit from it.

My copy arrived a couple of days ago, and yesterday I watched bluemaxima's hour long sojourn into the game and saw there was a scenario devoted entirely to Cross Ange. Also this:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Robot_Wars_V#Series_included
But keep sperging. Literally everyone and everything else is shit and doing it for the shit reasons. Nobody at all goes into a thread looking for more information about a niche subject or to communicate about said subject with other people.

I'm going with the version in this list. If there's references beyond that I'd hope they would be significant enough to require more sub-series beyond the main one.

And yes, Mightgaine is on the top 5 best Brave series along with Fighbird, GaoGaiGar, J-Decker and Da Garn.

Ah, this is the kind of thing I was looking for. Thanks fellow user. Gonna cross this shitpile off my list then.

Well you're being a fucking retard to begin with for thinking you need to watch anything to play SRW. There's a reason the plots are somewhat followed with most series in the games: so you can understand why the characters are there and what is going on. Plus by a dozen chapters or so in the story gets past most of the story arcs from each show and starts doing crazy crossover shenanigans.

You forgot to add the repeating animation for SEED and Destiny..like the Freedom trying to slice the Impulse near the torso was reused from the Strike vs the Duel.

And hell, how would you even try for guys like Tetsuya who didn't get a series? Try original Tetsuya? That wouldn't work since Shin Mazinger is outright different from the original Mazinger (I mean, Kurogane House, Tsubasa Nishikiori and Viscount Pygman's new look were from other Go Nagai's work for starters)

Not to mention in some cases the plots of some of the series reps aren't ever covered in the game and also aren't from anime, like the Macross 30 guys in BX or Linebarrels of Iron or the Virtua-on Miku mecha in UX.

Or worse, they are there..but their plots and storylines are fairly non-existent OR finished before the game even began(see Mazinkaiser in L, Combattler V in J, Getter Robo in W, classic Mazinger in K etc.)

To reference PxZ again:
If you never played Dead Rising, every time Frank West takes a photo of a sexy female from another game and the same EROTICA symbol pops up from that game, would you not be confused? Likewise, the pairing of Lei Lei and Frank is genius not only in their interactions, but in the comical combination of zombie killer and asian zombie. What is a valkyrie and why do they get stronger when their hair gets blue, and why do only some people have this power? When Soma and Alisa reference the horrible localization their game got in the title, or about collecting cores, you'd be lost if you had never heard of it or knew it was a hunting game. A particular section includes a reference to one of Zero's demons from Mega Man X, which manifests and has an impact on the battlefield itself. If you knew nothing about Dynamite Cop, you'd think Bruno was just a lame out of work policeman that uses strange weapons with the potential to explode randomly. Why is Seth obsessed with DNA and creating perfect creatures, and how does that relate to the bioweapons in Resident Evil, which also pull Jill and Chris into the mix? What about all the different kind of weapons used in all the different characters' and series' attacks, the names and types of their skills, and all the potential decisions and lines of dialogue all these characters have and their personal and individual motivations for working towards a common goal?

These are but a few of probably thousands of references the game makes, which comes up numerous times, and while individually none of these references or connections from character to character for connected storylines matter, if you miss too many of them you know absolutely nothing about anyone involved or why any of it matters. In particular in PxZ if you know nothing about .hack, you won't understand a good third of the story or why you're going through so many of the same places or enemies multiple times. I really don't know how else to explain to you what I'm looking for and why. Personal attacks and projected reasons for wanting to understand a game I would like to enjoy more are all that you've offered. Like I said though keep sperging.

Thanks to the rest of you.

Well, for Bruno..I didn't get why they call him Bruno because I knew him from Die Hard Arcade and I thought he was John McClane. (Hell, my local magazine that was covering the game made the same mistake by calling Bruno, John McClane)

And that's the point of crossover games: to get you to be interested in the IP through references. That's how these things work: they are full of references for the fans to enjoy and for non-fans to get interested in.
m8 you're the only one sperging since you can't just play an SRW game blind for some dumb autistic reason.

Fair enough, even other details like the base shown in the background looked more Gekigangar than Getter, but either way, wonderful.

SRW has been what got me to watch several anime, like Dancouga and G Gundam, so it can go either way.

Do yourself a favor and skip it. They somehow managed to take a show about lesbians fighting dragons on flying robot motorcycles and make it shit.

This. Might Gaine is one of the greatest shows ever made.

An understandable sentiment, though I would place Ange and 00 in the same bracket, and for stuff that's been in other SRWs, Code Geass and Eureka Seven and Macross Frontier as well.

Ange is Fukuda? Jesus christ no wonder. Someone needs to give that man amnesia so that he goes back to the mind he had when making GEAR Fighter Dendoh, that shit was wonderful.

Wait…Fukuda made GEAR Fighter Dendoh? That's impossible! Dendoh is a fun series..no way…you're having me on, right?

I don't think he's ever going to do animu again since his waifu died.

Yeah..his waifu, who decided to dick over a character just because she didn't like her VA.

I had the same reaction when I first found out. On a similar note, Taniguchi Goro, who made the shitfest we know today as "Code Geass" previously made an actually good show called Gun x Sword

The only bad thing I can say about Gun X Sword? They let Michael and Fasalina live while the twins stayed dead in an audio drama which they also do in SRW K. Also, we need more El Dora V.

It was but it was a beautiful shitfest

The only good part is Charles..and it's because of Wakamoto.

...

OK…Domon's daughter was good. Fuck Spinzaku though.

Hey, now, that Alice in Wonderland animation was pretty good.

All these mechs throwing themselves into my BREAST FIYAAAAA

Like I said, in every SRW game that features the Mazinger, trust it to be your workhorse for 90% of the game. The only reason that the Getter was slightly more useful than the Mazinger is that the Getter has 3 pilots with 3 different Seishins and Seishin Pools and 3 different modes. The Mazinger can tank and (in J and W) can dodge too and even when they nerfed the Rocket Punch from EN-Based to Ammo Based, they are still pretty efficient (especially having Mazinger and Great pair up in SRW L made it that the team that can tank, dodge and hit better what with the PU System gave each mech different bonuses to their partners in the squad)

The AI really seems to have a hardon for kouji in particular and will favor his ass over far weaker units.

And hence why Kouji and Tetsuya will always be your golden boys in every single SRW game they feature in. Even when they are nerfed they are still gamebreakers.

You know who they should've brought back too? Kotetsu Jeeg..or the updated Kotetsushin Jeeg only for us to get an FDS with Getter, Mazinger, Grendizer and Jeeg (we could've gotten Gaiking but there's some issue on who actually owns Gaiking but Go Nagai did mention in 2007 that he now owns Gaiking..) Why Jeeg? Just so we can have this scene

Don't put too many points into Z though. Gotta save some of that cash for later.

All my cash went into maxing out Raideen.

Raideen's fucking good but there's something even better than Raideen coming up

Yup…the Mazinkaiser!

Why'd you spoil it

Not really spoilt in @G considering that the first half of the plot was the Titans wanting all the Super Robots for their version of Project Aegis.

I don't know what mazinkaiser is, so the meaning is lost on me.

Raideen is my robbo though.

The Raideen's OK. It got a good theme song, the voice actor can switch between youthful to deep as fuck voice at a drop of a hat (if his voice sounds familiar to you, that's the voice of Akira Kamiya who voiced characters like Ryo Saeba, Roy Fokker, classic Ryoma, Kogoro Mouri, Prince Sincline or you Yanks know him as Lotor from Voltron…and the voice everyone knows him as, Kenshiro.)

Neat trivia, and yeah when he shouts god ramu he definitely drops several octaves.

I still want an SRW where the Dinosaurs from Getter were first beaten by El Dora V, and have Gol spouting ONORE EL DORA V also have GGG in so they can cower in fear before Chouryuujin, Harbinger of the Apocalypse

Geass wasted it's Wakamoto by not having him use his Magic Eye on that stone of human subconsciousness or whatever to write his memories over every human on Earth, so that when Black Charisma walked out back to the real world, he could be greeted by the entire world laughing Wakamoto-style, with a gradual pan out showing the Earth sitting in space with that wicked laugh reverberating throughout eternity.

Domon could admittedly get whiny, but he never got as whiny as that girl did I would sooner put Mirai from Build Fighters Try in the female Domon slot than Karen

Except K.

Raideen is a classy choice.

I liked him as Mendou too. Guy's got great range.

We don't talk about K…we like to pretend K (and its original characters) doesn't exists..lessens the pain that way.

K had issues, but I can't hate a game with Gun x Sword and the Virtuaroids. Mist is a shit though and it pisses me off that they're going to give him a big focus when he makes it into OG because they made a point of focusing on the Revlius being intended to have multiple frames like an Aestivalis, so they'll likely pair him with the R Originals since their techie had a hardon for frames

And the dude can sing too..ever heard him singing Ai Wo Torimodose? Or Kinnikuman Go Fight? Hell, he actually contributed some tunes for City Hunter's soundtrack too.

And that's what make K very painful. They got Zoids, Stargazer, Kotetsushin Jeeg, Gun X Sword and Gaiking…but the game is so bad (until X-Omega topped that) **Hell, even Japan hated Mist and this is from a country that prefers Kira Yamato over Amuro and Domon for God's sakes..they hate Mist to the point that trolls photoshopped Mist Rex on an OG game just to piss every SRW fan off)

I don't find K itself a bad game, Mist aside though. It's a bit too easy because Van is broke as shit, but it's one of the few games where getting kills past Double Ace isn't "wasted"

I mean, coming after the high point of the standalone SRW game that is W, K is seems a bit ho hum even with a decent roster.

To be sure, W is a fucking hard act to follow, especially for a Yuusha fan, so maybe because of that I give K more leeway than it deserves.

Have to say I'm warming up to Jiron and the xebungloids.

Yeah, Jiron and the gang are a breath of fresh air..in a post apocalyptic world. Wait till you see the ICBM Toss

I don't..especially when they brought back classic Mazinger…and did dick all with it.

I'll agree that that was the thing that pissed me off most about the game.

Yeah Jiron's great

Also Chiru. I think Chiru is the only one of Tomino's "loud, small childblob" characters that I not only didn't want to die but actually even took a liking to. Probably because she wasn't completely fucking useless like Katz and all those other little shits.

...

Just a note, any of you who are Nadesico fans owe it to yourselves to play SRW V they fix PoD

Copy hasn't arrived yet. I took standard, untracked shipping, so it takes longer, but if I paid for faster shipping it would have been caught by customs and held up for an extra week, along with demands for $25 extra. I lose either way, and so I am still without robots. Moon Dwellers is still fun while I wait, but I'm just doing it for the last few trophies. Giganscudo best boy.

Do they have a PoD version of Gai? If not, sorry W fixed PoD even better

I fully agree with how W handled the Gai half of the equation, but V really fixes Akito's relationships with the cast and makes it clear that he's finally got the proper happy ending he deserves. It also happens a lot earlier than in W, so you actually get Yurika back much sooner and in all her ridiculous glory

That said, I made sure to use custom soundtracks to replace Black Selena's theme with the SRW W version of Let's Go Gekigangar 3, and you should too

It was the art style more than anything that put me off them in the first place but now it's kind of endearing.

It also helped that Xabungle full power is hilarious and I love it. One of the few cases where the chibi robo artstyle complements the attack.

They still have custom soundtracks in? Fucking sweet, I missed that in Moon Dwellers.

What shipping option did you choose, and where do you live? Canada, and I'm still waiting on mine.

So, how many more games must I wait until J-Decker gets in a game?

However many games came out between Alpha 2 and V god I want J-Decker in just for the chief

He would completely freak out at all the cool robots he'd be seeing. I can't find that one screencap of him in my folders, and now I'm sad.

And pout everytime he misses a scene where someone henkeis/gattais for the first time or develops a new hissatsu. I need to finish that show sometime.

Me too.

Ah, Dumpson and McCrane…lucky bastards

W is a wonderful game. I still keep a save on that one stage with ZA POWA with Robo Gundan on a loop. Free, boosted will limit break is a hard drug to quit.

Yeah, SRW W is one of the best SRW games out there. The Alpha series are just as good, didn't help that W took a page from W (OVA Kaiser suddenly having the Kaiser Nova for example)

Shit, I meant W took a page from Alpha.

What makes a good SRW game anyway?

I'm playing UX because I want my ancient Chinese Gundams, but something feels…off.

A good SRW? A good SRW is where the system is OK (and with no BS like Evasion Decay and such), the series that appear in the game get some good screen time, the backstory and the story itself have this interplay between the different franchises and not have ONE franchise dominate the story (J is guilty of this by having the plot to G Gundam being overridden by SEED and fucking ANKOKU DAISHOGUN is relegated into a third party rather than a stage boss..just to make way for Brain Powered stuff) and of course, the game managed to rewrite all the crappy bits from the source anime (Mu La Flaga gets to live, Gai Daidoji gets to live, Amuro, Kouji, Char and everyone else called Kira a jackass and Amuro helping to not kill of Stella, PoD either got a happier ending or downright averted, Musashi gets to live etc) and of course, there's the setpieces (Shin Getter-1's appearance stopping a berserk EVA-01, Alberto the Shockwave fighting an Angel on foot or Alberto the Shockwave fighting Master Asia to a draw, SRW J's Hell Island assault which combines the Zeorymer, FMP and Mazinkaiser finale etc.)

...

Sangokuden is one of the best things ever. Enjoy your SEIGI

Best get used to it, it's been in every game since A Portable I believe, though thankfully not as severe as in that game. It's a smart idea to be fair, since otherwise you get literally unkillable units.

Adding on to this, establishing identity for the units so they stand out against one another based on their source material - for instance, Godsigma and Bardios in Z, with the former having the Trinity Charge and the latter having Akuukan Totsunyuu. Also beyond fixing problems, good story interplay is great, like how they tied the Zonders, Radam, and Ivaluders in J, or made Kiba a clone of a Mikene in BX

Heh, I'm aware, although SD Gundam Sangokuden is pretty Shu centric. I'm looking forward with siding with Cao Cao if the stage flow chart is accurate.

Noted, I am playing UX though, it doesn't seem to have as much reference material than the other games.

It's a one stage thing if I recall, just a question of whether Ryuubi thinks Son Ken or Sou Sou has the right of things in a little argument. No one leaves permanently or anything.

Great.

Actually, Radam and Eviluders are in W. And adding to the point of good story interplay, make it so that the baddies have good reason to work together, SRW 2 being the only exception to the rule as it was the first SRW with a story (the original SRW was "You good guy, there's a bunch of baddies, go kill" also, the final boss was bad guy from the Great Mazinger vs Getter Robo.)

Right, durr, sorry.

Recently they're pretty good about this. In V it's pretty easy, since Black Noire could be used to unite just about anyone but they don't rely on that constantly either.

Personally, I think one of the charms of W and the other portable entries were the sprites. J hit the absolute sweet spot in terms of SD designs and Sprite work, and W only polished the animations, but K onwards they seemed to try and make them more like the cell-inspired animations of the console designs since about Alpha 2.

What I'm trying to get across is the way the grainy, SD sprites looked on the GBA and DS made their limited animations look more exagerated. The way L, and now UX look tries to mimic the console entries hi-res art, but by doing so the sprites end up looking kinda blurry and don't lend themselves well to the often stunted animation. It looks like a low res Alpha 1, but moves like Impact.

The Radam were in J too.

Yeah, but not the Zonders and Ivaluders, which is where the story connecting happened.

Skill point for taking troy down in 2 turns or having her survive the mission. Went back and checked.

You'd need the combined money for the last 2 missions to have enough to upgrade the gallian enough that it's punch could knock her out through defense in 2 turns. What the fuck game.

MY JUSTICE POWER HAS CALLED DOWN THE STORM

They are pushing Might Gaine strong here…just like GaoGaiGar which is always good having a Super put over strongly rather than having a Real steal the show in the game called SUPER ROBOT Wars

Shit taste everywhere.

Cross Ange literally saved anime. KLK did nothing but disappoint.
and best of all

Cross Ange had EVERYTHING and yeah it was a bit low brow but mecha is supposed to be fun and not serious a lot of the time!

They are and it's beautiful. Even the other units from it are great - Tri/Battle Bomber and Guard Diver are both solid units, and Black Might Gaine is basically another Might Gaine with the two weaker extra attacks dropped, and the EN cost of Dourinken and Signal Beam dropped to compensate.

The problem with Ange is that, like Geass, there're absolutely no likable characters at all, and the mech designs are uninspired and dull. It also goes really out of it's way to push the "everyone is shit" message, and overall it's a very depressing and not at all fun series. I really wish Fukuda would get over whatever made him create this and SEED and go back to making good shows like Dendoh.

Sorry, mate. Fanservice isn't what good mecha series make. or Dragon Aras or Lolis.
Hell, to me, having lolis is a mark of a bad anime. Yes, even Lynn from HnK (but at least they made her and Bat git gud and led a rebellion in HnK 2.)

Anyone own any of the SRW model kits?

The alteisen is pretty lovely if someone aged feeling in it's engineering. But I'd like to hear of how the other kits worked out.

Oh yeah, I am seeing that first hand. I don't like Seed Destiny, but it sure doesn't deserve to look like it does in UX.

Nope.

Mub Rub isn't getting in SRW because it's fucking garbage that only idiots like.

...

As is Strike Witches..seriously, you don't know how some dimwits would want Strike Witches in SRW (or that one guy who wants Infinite Stratos)

Yeah, I draw the line at Bonta-Kun for violation of common sense,,,but it does comes with the Not! A-Team theme…

Well sh-

"Nine, please keep analyzing anything you have on the Mikene, I have a feeling we'll fight them again soon. Also, anything you can on Kouji."
"Wow Baka Shinji, you're awfully motivated."
"Kouji taught me the meaning of our fight. If I can, I want to save him."
There has never been a more appropriate time for this

Honestly, SRW Alpha did a lot of work to Shinji (and this is original Shinji, not the "actually have a spine" Rebuild version either)

I'm aware, and that the Shinji/Kouji relationship here is in large part a carryover from Alpha's. Still fucking great to see.

I would buy a Giganscudo. Maybe with optional anchors.

L is one of my least favourite srws, partially because my head is seeing what LOOKS like Alpha 3 Mazinkaiser, but the cut ins are completely silent. J and W had static ones, which was great, but when you start showing me the character and have them move and make mouth flaps, I am expecting noise.

Well, in universe Bonta-kun IS armour plated. And that grenade launcher is potent. No reason he can't shoot a few Zakus with that.

...

Well to be fair, who else can help Shinji than the first Super Robot pilot (Hell, Shinji can be seen as the NGE version of Kouji while Asuka is the NGE version of Tetsuya)

I remember Hyouma also being supportive in Alpha 1, plus in MX Shinji manned up when he saw the Dendoh kids manning up to face their fears. Plus in this game, there's good ol' Senpuuji Maito and Nagare Ryouma.

And in Alpha, I think a lot of Super Robot pilots were there to help Shinji out and the end result? Death by Tang was downright averted.

Armageddon Ryoma and Shinji would be a terrible pairing. He would fuck Shinji up.

At least until Alpha 3

Nah, Armageddon Ryouma tends to be the rougher big brother, like he became to Shimon from Gurren Lagann, especially after Kamina died.

Weren't they bros in Z?

Armageddon? Shinji should be thanking his lucky stars that it's not Manga Ryoma or New Getter Robo Ryoma..

Still averted though. End did happened but Death by Tang gets averted. Hell, Asuka didn't even get fucked by a random Longinus out of nowhere.

REALLY been meaning to play this line of games. Where may I be able to get them?

The internet

Fully translated into English are Alpha Gaiden (PSX), J (GBA), OG1 and 2 (GBA), OG: Moon Dwellers (PS4) and V, which is for the Vita. Also, use this. akurasu.net/wiki/Super_Robot_Wars

Well, Kabuto is a type of Samurai Helmet…still doesn't stop it from being funny..especially with Duke's reaction.

Huh.

I know how the translators got there, but it will never stop being funny. No clue where the fuck they got crabstick from though

Holy shit V

Wait…what? So, Jerrid will never fall off a cliff now?

Does Kamille apologize for fucking up Jerid's love life?

Does anyone think it's silly how they always have all the UC shit happening at the same time? In Z3, Char's Counter-Attack was simultaneous with Unicorn.

A little, but no more than telling me that Mazinger and Gundam exist in the same universe

Apparently not.

No, but he does apologize for hitting him.

You think that's bad, you should play Advance, where OYW Char goes along with Ramba Ral and the Black Tri-Stars to help Gatou steal GP-02, which upon launching into space traumatizes Kamille out of the coma he landed in at the end of Zeta. This is also while at the same time 08th MS Team and ZZ are going on and the game ends with the Shadow Mirror taking Char/Neo Zeon's place for CCA

You want silly? What about Alpha 3's Earth having an Earth Federation and an Earth Alliance. Hell, one cutscene had a soldier in UC Fed Brown…and then we have guys suddenly in Earth Alliance uniforms. On that note, the Cosmic Era stuff suddenly appearing in a very UC-Centric timeline that is Alpha with the excuse that they were there the whole time…but just wasn't mentioned even though Alpha 1 had some events in Space and Alpha Gaiden has the Gravity Shockwave that threatens the colonies as well as Earth and no mention to a) genetic engineering that makes up the Coordinators or b) any CE tech or factions before. And the Titans story arc in @2 was going to continue in 3 with Gundam Sentinel but that got cancelled.

You could have just left it at this. Still best game in series, though, with OGS2nd following it

To me, it's the thing that stood out in @3. Everything else got built up from the past 3 games so all of their stories are either wrapped up or going to be wrapped up in 3 since 3 is this one grand finale…and then SEED reared its ugly head.

Eh, of squad-based games perhaps.

To be honest, I always think that the whole @ series and W are the best SRW games out there. MX and Compact 2 (and its remake, Impact) are unique for the Free Route System (basically, you can go through any route split in any order you want, kinda like Ace Combat X)

Alpha 1 and Gaiden are great, but would really benefit from a remake that speeds movement and loading and the like up. I'm not a fan of squad-based games, so I don't care as much for Alpha 2 and 3. W was amazing, if too easy, and I'm a huge fag for Z2, BX, and now V.

I guess he mellowed out after that first bit with Black Getter.

To be fair, the Z2 bit is primarily before Michiru's death and Saotome's losing it, and Black Getter is Z2-2, which is also post-time skip for Gurren.

Fuck, play asia, where is that shipping crate with my robots? Anyone in Canada have theirs? Did you take the cheap option or did you somehow avoid the customs goblins?

Mah Sphere Driver.

Vifam in SRW when?

I'm not sure if we're allowed to direct link to those sites or anything on Holla Forums, but I can guarantee if you search "srw j english patch" it will be the first result. Download the ROM, and run with your favourite emulator.

J is probably the best starter game for the series. If you want to invest, I'd say take Moon Dwellers if you really want more of Granteed and such, go for V if you want more Mazinger and Gundam and such, both can be bought from Play Asia.

Alpha Gaiden is very old and clunky at this point, but it's fun if you can get around its quirks and high difficulty. The first two OG games (the ones with only the original units, like Granteed from J) are released officially on the GBA, acquire them how you'd like. OG1 is notably worse than OG2 in terms of animations, but they are both fun stories. Moon Dwellers is a few sequels down the line, so you're skipping about two games as they weren't released in English, but it is designed for new users, and focuses on introducing J which introduced a lot of people to the series to begin with.

I'll be honest the only incarnation of Shinji I like is when he's in SRW just because he actually develops and matures. Doesn't he lose his shit though when Musashi dies in 3rd alpha?

I will defend W to the death. The only flaws are taking out Layzner and Brain Powered.

I don't know why people give Rebuild so much shit, when the first two actually had Shinji assert himself, and even Rei started becoming a character. Asuka was more mellow, Misato wasn't a freak, Gendo was even going to have dinner with Shinji till the angel showed up. Everyone is better in it, do people not like it because they don't have extended still shots and
Q, I can understand, apparently Misato forgot how she was telling Shinji to "do the thing" when she put a bomb collar on him as punishment for doing the thing.

HELLO

To be fair I don't like Eva period so eh.

Actualyl watching Vifam, shows solid, you could probably put it next to the original MSG in that the Vifam was a competitor to the RX series for mass production in the federation but they went with the RX design because it "looked sleeker".

I'm pretty sure I've seen you do that in every thread related to SRW. W is the follow up to J, right?

That's because it's a sequel, not a reboot.

But, they made it better again with GoLion, a PoD version of Gai, Orgun, SEED getting pushed aside for Astray (and not having their more interesting characters killed off) oh, and ANKOKU FUCKING DAISHOGUN is now a stage boss and not a third party to Brain Powered.

Watermelons? Hedgehogs? The fuck? Even though I never liked NGE (Not even for the waifus), I do find Rebuild to be somewhat tolerable (I still can't get over that someone have the middle name Illustrious though, hilarious as fuck)

Nope, W uses the battle system and sprites from J but not a follow up to J (though one funny bit in W is that whenever you have Wing Zero uses its TBR, the animation had him diving towards Earth…even when the stage is on the Moon or Mars…or on Earth.)

Watermelons are more or less incidental, but the hedgehog's dilemma is core assumption of the damn show.

Who's the hedgehog and who's the watermelon?

I see it as J 2.0. it has most of the series from J, and their accompanying sprites, but the animations have all been pumped up, and new series have been added. The system is nearly identical, with a few extra bits tossed in. If it was in English, I'd be recommending that too.

Shinji is the hedgehog, and so is everyone else.

Kaiji is the watermelon.

That's why I said the only flaws were removing two series I liked. Layzner needs more love.

...

Brigar is a good show if you want to watch something decent.

The most hilarious part is the same people here like brave series, which pretty much the same except for a younger target audience.

Never heard of it. Googling returns some spaniard memes.

It was a deconstruction of Gundam SEED, how can it be bad?

Well you see user, Fukuda has been moved by the constant war that has occurred in the world since the death of Christ, and must enlight us through his anime. Also I think Tomino made him animate Victory Gundam's bikini babe assault.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaxy_Cyclone_Braiger

Sometimes the trnaslation has been written as Braigar or Brigar or Bryger

2nd pic related

Is there a list of translated/fan translated games of this series?

Mate gonna have to learn nip. There's only like 4 games with a "full translation."

No the games won't come to the west, no it's not easy to translate them.

Off the top of my head

Alpha Gaiden (PS1 version)
1st SRW
SRW J (GBA)
SRW 3 (SNES?)

SRW Alpha (PS1)
SRW GC (GCN)

What a fucking tremendous pain in the ass. How does anyone deal with this shit? For fun, no less

Sometimes I'm thankful some SRW games retread storylines from previous SRWs, other times it gets me very very confused.

A sense of civic duty drives them.

By having PASSION and COURAGE

Shit sometimes you can't do translations do to the system or the on disc security measures aren't mapped out or won't allow it.

What sort of jackass developers would do that?

anti-piracy measures sometimes need to be bypassed. IIRC it's a major reason why 2nd and 3rd alpha don't have any form of translations

Does Ghideon do anything but fuck around on Twitter all day?

I don't think I've ever seen that nigger credited for anything other than "Script Editing" or some equally unimportant bullshit

I think there's a reason he hasn't made any progress on any of "his" projects lately; his attention-seeking kool-aid-drinking faggot ass probably drove away the only people capable of making any progress.

The sad part is there are people who will believe you

It's played way too straight to be a deconstruction of SEED

Guess which one I'm talking about.

Blazblue!

I'm pretty sure bad guys were on a winning streak in there for whatever the fucking number of rehashes there is.

I've vented once or twice about the challenge objectives but it's been so far so standard in that regard. When is this 'wall' that was mentioned earlier in the thread supposed to actually pop up?

What mission are you on?

That's what I mean, they're both the same show, it's not even a deconstruction and it can't be either because both shows have no good guys, only villains fighting other villains

Why is Gamlin the best pilot?

Should happen around stage 24 or so, special mentions to the Turn X stage

Because by the end he knew that everyone needed to stop what they were doing and listen to Basara's song: youtu.be/NWJ_NKgUDiY?t=166

They supposedly got people from /m/ to help finish the editing, and Ghideon wasnt even supposed to be in charge of that, but I never heard word of it after. Where the fuck did all those people go?

Might Gaine is the Xabungle of Braves.

Badass yet lighthearted? I thought that was J-Decker.

Jinron getting into a tussle with a blue haired muscle girl who wants his bazooka. 28 I believe it is.

A blue haired muscle girl wants Jiron's bazooka, eh?

Just mass produce it anyway, it worked for the Sol Tekkamen.

WALKER GALLIER IS A MAN

oh yeah Tron. she dies in the show the episode she's shown in.

on the Hard mode rotue you get her as a pilot instantly. on below I think it varies but you DO have to make sure she lives through the entire scenario.

Well, that's an alternate way to get her, right? You can either punch her mech to submission or keep her alive, right?

The difficulty should start gradually increasing from that point on. I seem to remember it becoming a real bitch after the Reals get back from space.

Honestly it's much easier to just keep her alive until the end. When I last did it she didn't even get a chance to attack anyone.

"Fu… fuhuhahaha, hahahahahaha! You have my gratitude, Kabuto Kouji!"

"WHAT!?"

"Thanks to this body granted me by Hades-sama, I was able to truly fight you with all I had. I have been vanquished, but I have no regrets left."

"Ashura…"

"I meet my end as the pitiful Baron Ashura, who forgot his duty as Tristan and Isolde of Olympus… but that is fine! Kabuto Kouji! Having met a man like you, I, Ashura… can say I had a blessed life!"

"Ashura… my fight with you, was indeed the very path of my fight with Mazinger Z… I don't ever think I'll be grateful to you… but I won't ever forget you. My greatest enemy… Baron Ashura… rest in peace."

So when will this be reenacted in anime form for Shin Mazinger Great-hen?

Never ever because let's make series about classic Supers being used as costumes for little girls instead because fuck Super Robot fans…

OK, whoever it is in charge of the soundtrack of SRW V, you win points for making the Might Gaine intro being awesome..and for some reason, Holla Forums is not letting me embed Youtube videos.

Arashi no Hero was always awesome, but that smooth jazz for the vocal bits was the perfect choice. The two gattai themes are done perfectly too.

Favourite musical moments? The stage in W with ZA POWA and a constant loop of Robo Gundan is hype as fuck, and having everyone, including the Iron Gear doing the monkey to King Gainer's theme in Z was fun.

Anytime they got the FDS and they play this

Too many to count. Those, , all the Might Gaine moments in V… I think "Music, Start" in W takes the cake though:

youtu.be/sPoMsDXp_YU?t=380

Fuck 00

Been saying that for years. 00 is such bullshit..it's bad enough that it's a redone version of Wing with magic pixie dust.

Oh, I've always hated 00, but it's just obnoxious what kind of special treatment it gets that said, I never got the comparisons with Wing, beyond the "team of boy band pilots" which SEED did as well. If anything, the latter half of 00 feels more like a Zeta ripoff complete with a Totally Not The Titans Really

And the 00 mech designs are just bleh. Never a huge fan of mechs with lanky (and looks easily breakable) limbs or Real mechs with BS that is trying to hard to be a Super.

In Moon Dwellers, anyone get the "all Sr points" achievement? Its bugging me that it's the only one missing, what does it mean? All Sr points from all routes, all in one playthrough?

I'm guessing all means all. But seriously, user, playing SRW for the achievement?

V has been stuck in customs for weeks, man, cut me some slack. I've played through this thing like 8 times this month, I need something to entertain me.

Ah, well..that's ok then.

Yeah, hopefully they send it out soon. Its pretty obviously not drugs, so what's the holdup?
