Considering how many violent films and television shows there are floating about and they tend not to do anything. I'd say video games are in a similar state and are only pursued as they are due to being still a fairly new thing in mainstream culture. So let us envision a marketplace that has competing gamestores, some offer ratings and point of sale enforcement, some don't, parents favor the ones that do, forcing the rest to conform or go out of business. My main beef with rating systems is the incentive to fit into a slightly lower category (read: censor), especially when it's trying to appease multiple countries at once. Overall though even I agree that having them does more good than harm. Outright fuck-ups like "High-impact sexual violence" are rare.

Where did I say I was against this? I merely said that they should not be forced to do so. If catering to parents seem like a profitable way to go (which they are since they're the ones buying the games), then the stores will shift their tactics to serve them.

I don't want my kids playing what I think is inappropriate for them, not some evangelical puritan with a sitck up his ass, or some marxist SJW who only wants to turn my child into a comrade. Even if I was buying hentai game #501 for an 8 year old, for that situation to arise there would surely be more pressing issues in the household to be concerned about (which would indeed require some intervention).

Again as long as you don't force people to abide by this it's fine by me. Sure if I had a kid, I'll only buy from retailers with games that satisfy my criteria.
