People wanted a cheaper eternal format since legacy is extremely hard to get into. So they made modern a thing. Anything with the "modern" frame (mirrodin and onwards) is allowed, except the ban list of course.
The format is relatively chesp since they periodically reprint value cards in sets known as 'modern masters'. They're also incredibly fun to draft with until you pull a double goyf pack

It's a leaf from southeast Asia. Typically comes dried and powdered. You take it orally (mix it with a drink, or throw the powder in your mouth and rinse it down with a drink) and it tastes fucking terrible. But it's an opioid, and for me it's the only legal (for now) natural substance I've found that helps me not feel like shit 24/7. Modern Masters does jack shit. The format is expensive as fuck for many major decks. Even burn decks can run you around $500, most even more since it's a lot like zoo these days. There are lots of TCGs, but most don't last like those do.

Jund and Zoo aren't as large of a slice of the meta as they used to be. It also got two reprints in MM. I've seen a lot of legacy decks start to run two of them instead of a full set. Reprints do help, but not nearly as much as they should. Modern is not a cheap format for the most part. Decks that you would run goyf in still cost around $1500 to build.
Never said they didn't, but the secondary market is still the main thing to blame.

One person stopped us to complain about how disgusting I was for having that out in public, but kinda laughed at how innocent I was when I explained I was only like 16 and had no idea what it was. Relatively speaking I'd say it is. Less to get into than legacy, which imo has a few more problems than just the price tag, and chunks of your deck isn't phased out and needing replacing several times a year. Then again, hobbies are rarely cheap.
The secondary market is a bitch, but there isn't much that can be done about it without something drastic happening like turning mtg into a living card game (a la netrunner).

Modern decks generally peak at around $1500 while legacy seems to peak around $2000 (some rare cases go much higher like Lands). I'd say the gap is getting pretty small.
I can't think of much outside the lack of support. Modern is heading the way of legacy since Wizards dropped it like it was hot. Legacy is a lot more fun to play to play in my opinion. It's a much more diverse format, while modern is mostly aggro with some midrange. It'd be a better format if wizards didn't hate control and combo so much. Preordain being banned can't be justified, as many other bannings like twin.
