They think communism is left wing but they also view the soviet era as part of their tradition. People there can remember the soviet era but very few can remember the Tzar.
So obviously in Russia the simplistic definition of left = progression and right = tradition doesnt work over there.

When you think about it, the idea that left = progression and right = tradition is logically flawed because it assumes the left would never get in to power.
Because once the left is in power they would be campaining for the status quo and the right would be campaigning for change.
