1. A somewhat smaller game
2. A game that doesn't play like Pirate's Curse

Although there will be some upcoming gameplay modes as other characters that are supposed to be different in some way.

Risky Mode, the next released character, changes the gameplay to Pirate's Curse.

Why is she so smug?

I just finished HGH and I'm more critical of it than anything. The visuals and the music are top notch, and the basics of movement and combat feel solid. Beyond those core strengths I thought the game had way more missteps than anything. I get the feeling that the artistic ambitions of Wayforward are not matched by their game design sensibilities. Level design is spotty at best, with some well designs bits and too many bad ones. Hell the first level has large sections where you just run along a straight line with only basic mooks to challenge you. Basic enemies are a complete joke. Most die before they can establish any kind of threat. Enemies that take more than one hit can be jumped over and ignored or ducked under and killed without retaliation. They also do little to provide an environmental threat. Some basic mooks throw molotovs at you and there are some slow moving bats that may hinder you but that's about it. Flagship 2d action games like Mega Man or Castlevania are very good at creating situations where you NEED to deal with enemies on screen before proceeding. Boss fights range from mediocre to pretty good, but all of them can be easily cheesed with either the scimitar or the bubble spell (I went with scimitar because invincibility isn't that valuable when you can just tank everything without worry). The platforming in the game is on the cusp of greatness but holy shit REMOVE THE MONKEY FORM. It lets you blow through platforming sections as easily as you can blow through basic enemies. I give a pass to the harpy form because at least you get it later in the game. The other transformation forms were fine, if underutilized. So neither aspect of the game has any challenge, combat or platforming. Finally, I thought the ending was really weak. It seemed like the game was building up a confrontation with Shantae's mother. The final boss being some robot without a character (and easily the worst boss in the game, especially the first form) hurt the game and made it end on a low note. Action platformers are not in short supply as seen here >>>11836109 and I think Wayforward is being left behind by developers with greater design sense.

That's a shame because everyone seems to think Pirate's Curse is the best one and it's a slog to get through for me. Guess I'll wait for the next one to see if it's any better

I found Pirate's Curse to be just comfy to play.

I'd say a 7.5/10 is fair for the game. An 8 if i'm feeling generous.

Half Genie Hero is a good game, but I'd still rate Pirate's Curse as the best in the series. Really the only thing HGH did better was the graphical upgrade but everything else feels a bit lacking compared to Pirate's Curse. First off, a whole bunch of transformations that either cross over in use or have barely any use at all. You don't need two water traversing transformations, or two flying transformations. Mouse was only used for getting 2 or 3 collectables, same for the spider (who becomes obsolete once you get the harpy).

No real story in HGH either, or characters to back it up with. Kind of feels like HGH was intended to be made as an episodic game released in chunks, because it's always the same formula: Mimic tells you to go find something for his device, you go find it, he tells you to find the next one. Nothing of consequence happens inbetween the questing: Risky appears as the opener boss, then fucks off for the whole game, replacement genie shows up, turns out to have some interesting backstory and traits, then disappears and is never mentioned again. Characters like Sky, Rottytops and Bolo stand in one spot and don't do anything of consequence or interest. Ultimately boils down a series of barely veiled fetch quest without context or pay off, just got to scour the levels for all the collectables, it's like DK64 but smaller.

Bit rambly but those are the things that kept getting into my mind playing HGH. Again, not a bad game, but I had just replayed Pirate's Curse before it came out and Pirate's Curse set a very high mark that HGH does not reach.

I wouldn't say it was bad, but it was a huge step back from Pirate's Curse and felt incredibly rushed and unfinished.

I liked Shantae and the pirate's curse better than half genie hero. It had more original music instead of remixing old songs, the exploration was better, the story seemed less intrusive to me (since it doesn't matter anyway). Half genie hero was a great game too and it looked amazing, but I found it too easy. After like 30% of the game I breezed through it like it's nothing, never paying attention to when I got hit.

I feel like this is a series where each game is good, in some cases nearly perfect, but then they fuck it up somehow.

The original game was fun, challenging, and a novel concept, but the backtracking and constant animal dancing got super tedious by the end of the game (note: I actually like the animal dancing better in the first than in the second, since the minigame makes the player feel more in control, and allows you to string together different dances and musical clips).

The second game got rid of consumable subweapons in favor of a magic system, and that was nice, but the game was way too short, the sprites were ugly, the character portraits looked DeviantArt-tier, it had that shmup section that went on way too long, the map was awkward, warping anywhere was a pain in the ass, and dancing was reduced to a clunky waiting game that would have been even more tedious than the first game had they added even one more animal dance to the game.

The third game had beautiful backgrounds and character portraits, but still used the ugly sprites from the second game. Platforming was a heavy focus, and was bretty gud. Warping was fairly simple, and was done with a consumable item that sent you back to town. The magic system and dancing were both removed, and consumable subweapons were brought back. Instead of one massive Metroidvania world to explore, there were action stages with dungeons inside them. Levels inside levels. Or levels inside levels inside levels in the case of the Hell level. Kind of weird, but whatever. It cuts down on backtracking, but also waters down the Shantae experience. Between this and the removal of magic, it felt like I was playing a totally different game.

Half-Genie Hero… It just feels like a Kikestarter sellout. WayForward has always had a passion for game development, but HGH just seems like a mishmash of stretch goals and unfulfilled potential. They brought back the magic system and animal dances, so that's nice, but the magic system is broken and half the dances in the game are useless outside of a particular situation that calls for them. They finally got rid of the ugly Risky's Revenge sprites in favor of HD sprites, but they're not as smoothly animated as even the first game on the GBC, and they look a bit out of place in the game's 3D environments. Again, the game is way too short, and more importantly, way too linear, with no real focus, and too little attention given to certain plot points that should have been bigger. It's not a bad game by any means, just disappointing.

Her RR sprites were muddy and lacked definition, she wore a vest that she didn't have in her character portraits (that just doesn't match her outfit at all), and the whites of her eyes were blue for whatever reason (they were slightly blue in the original as well, but much closer to white). The shape of her face was also off, it looked as if she had no cheeks and no nose. While the nose detail isn't present in the GBC game's sprites, her cheeks were, and her face looks much more natural as a result. She's also making a very dopey expression at all times in the RR sprites, where she wasn't in the original or HGH.

Even though the sprites aren't higher resolution than the original GBC sprites, they tried to pack in much more color depth, which just made the sprites look like a mess. The original sprites had black outlines, which the RR sprites did not, and clearly differentiated between different parts of Shantae's body, which the RR sprites did not.

In the interest of fairness, the Risky's Revenge sprites did fit the look of Risky's Revenge, and to a lesser extent Pirate's Curse, better than the Half-Genie Hero sprites fit the look of Half-Genie Hero, and I actually like that game's sprites quite a bit.
