The japanese manuals for the genesis titles all have backstory about the emeralds, angel island, and an ancient civilization that eventually lead up to Adventure. Heroes continues off of SA2, and Shadow leads off of Heroes. Battle has a whole lot of interrelation between the two Adventure games, and Advance 3 ties into Battle. Sonic 4 ep II marks the return of the Little Planet from CD.

Adventure 1 and 2 are actually two of the least related games in the series. Adventure 1 is the end of the story arc about the emeralds and their backstory that started in the first game (but is more important in Sonic 2, 3&K, and Chaotix). Adventure 2 starts an arc about Shadow that continues through Heroes, Advance 2, Battle, Advance 3, and his own game, with '06 as a kind of epilogue.

Sonic 4 can be seen as explaining how Metal Sonic came back after Sonic CD. It also features the Death Egg II, which is deactivated, but not destroyed at the end of the game. The Death Egg II then appears as the central plot in Sonic the Fighters, along with Metal Sonic.

I always wondered if the second Sonic Robot in there was meant to be the one from Sonic 2, or the one from Sonic & Knuckles. Or perhaps they're supposed to be the same one, but they certainly don't look the same.

I always thought the one from Sonic & Knuckles was unjustly ignored, considering he's the main bad guy of Knuckles' story, and is seemingly operating independent of Eggman at that point (barring that glitch in Flying Battery). The comics should do something with him and Metal Sonic together.

That's not true at all. Shadow is very much canon and is all about expanding on shit that happened in Sonic Adventure 2. It's like you haven't even played it. Then '06 very clearly leads off of the resolution of the game Shadow finally lets go of his past and questions about his identity and has him just be a badass with no more angst.

All of Sonic 3 & Knuckles takes place on "Angel Island." I don't know why the first level is "Angel Island Zone." Either because it's an introduction, or they fucked up. But Angel Island does have islands within it (in lakes and stuff) and connected to it (like the Shrine in Sonic Adventure). This is why Ice Cap Zone from Sonic 3 reappears in Sonic Adventure. Lava Reef Zone also seems to be the same location as Red Mountain.

However, the main part of the island from Sonic Adventure seems to be Westside Island, the original home of the emeralds from before Chaos attacked, and the setting of Sonic 2. This one seems less thought out though and might not be intentional (just both places are said to be the original home of the emeralds). The best evidence there is that Tails lives there. Any similarities are explained by them originally being the same landmass and culture.

Newtronic High Zone (the island from Knuckles Chaotix) was also originally part of Westside Island, but was sunken into the sea, along with the Chaos Rings (the tools the echidnas used to harness the emerald's energy) when Angel Island and the Master Emerald was sent into the air.

I didn't mention '06 because it was initially meant to be a reboot of sorts, and it retcons itself out of existence. Shadow definitely continues off SA2 and Heroes. It resolves the issue of Shadow's identity and amnesia from Heroes, and it gives more explanation to what exactly Gerald was doing with the Ark and Shadow.

Unless you mean at some early point in development (which I've never seen evidence of except for the name), then no. The actual game very much continues off of what was before. People always say it's a reboot because they never actually played it and have no idea what they're talking about, but heard Game Grumps talk about it and think those idiots know anything about video games.

So, i completed SA1 for second time in my life (or third one, i don't really remember).
Thoughts so far:
1. Eggman won in SA1. Fuck, he wanted to use Chaos to destroy Station Square, he did it, he killed a lot of innocent people, if he didn't wasted his second eggman carier and let sonic kill chaos he would already start building his shitty eggman land. So technically all those people you meet through the city are fucking dead, and drowned in chaos water fluids.
2. I only now noticed obvious hint that chaos was the one who destroyed entire civilization of echidnas in the past. Just because Tikal didn't wanted for chaos emeralds to be used as weapons, chaos destroyed their entire civilization, makes sense, as soon as Tikal made a wish to stop the elder. Same reason why insides of ruins are full of water after being destroyed.
3. So, after being destroyed chao became human pets and other animal civilizations "started to live in harmony with humans". Eventually they will all die out as minorities, but who cares, right? Its fucking furries, they don't even have empathy to lost human lives in station square, i don't think they will live in harmony for long.

Still the most complex sonic game storywise, only SA2 comes close to this.

Actually, if you go to Station Square during Super Sonic's story (which you never have to do, since Super Sonic's story is basically just walking a couple feet to a boss fight), there are only a couple people left, who tell you that everyone left after Eggman's missile attack, and that they are leaving too.

The game has some great attention to detail with the NPC stories.

But it really doesn't. Yes, it's reasonable to say Shadow is part of GUN because he's let go of his past, but, it can also easily be said that past doesn't exist in the first place within the context of the game. The game also has inconsistencies with the entire series, like one of the chaos emeralds being trapped in a time loop where it couldn't have possible be used in any of the prior games, or Blaze having a completely different back story to what she had in Rush.

I'm not sure you even entirely understand the story. Completely destroying Station Square was Eggman's plan B, which was done entirely out of spite. He wanted to use Chaos to take over the world, not destroy it. Chaos didn't destroy the echidna civilization because Tikal didn't want them to use the emeralds. Chaos went crazy out of grief over the chao in its shrine being hurt and maybe killed by Pachamac's attack. Tikal had to seal it to prevent it from destroying anything else. And, finally, the line about living in harmony with humans was about the chao, not the animal people. Again, Chaos went mad over the chao being hurt, so Tikal was reassuring it that the chao were now safe.

You could say that about any detail in any series that happens to not be mentioned in a sequel. It's easier to argue that Unleashed is a reboot since it doesn't even feature many old characters beyond Tails and Amy.

Why was Chaos fucking around on a crater in Sonic Battle? Why was he attacking anything he met? What did he do after the end of the game? What did Gamma do after the end of Sonic Battle?

I also like to think that even if Chaos did fulfill Eggman's plan B, it was ultimately fruitless. In the process he lost everything, his mech and bases as well. I wouldn't be surprised if between SA1 and SA2 he was forced to be on the run and modify his hovercraft into a mech walker with enough arsenal so he can somehow steal a GUN base (probably what happened in Sand Ocean) and use the Eclipse Cannon as a desperate attempt to regain his machinery with the help of the world government.

Yeah, between sa1 and sa2 eggman was a broken man. This is why he teams up with Sonic as soon as ARK starts to fall down. He has nowhere to go and no plans anymore.

Hell, make a game with a "light" and "dark" side but have it be Sonic and Metal Sonic who have a similar base playstyle.

The simple character of Metal's drive is "be better than Sonic" but with no defined limit or even what at, so he has a simple reason to even become a hero if it would fall into the category of 1-upping Sonic.

This is basically how I've seen it:

Rush is pretty damn good and it's interesting to see Blaze as pretty much a blend of another universe Sonic and knuckles, but instead of one who just didn't give a shit what others thought of him, took it personally because of all their responsibilities and got angsty.

Hell, Rush is the only canon time I've ever seen Sonic hesitate to reply when someone mentions their sob backstory, but also that he tries not to let her go

I enjoyed 1 more than 2, mostly because the gameplay as a whole felt tighter and was less about using a gimmick than using your knowledge of the track and skillful movements.

2017 seems like it'll be like Generations/unleashed/Colors and may even include a "Bad Future" where you play as Boom Sonic

Unleashed plays the same as Generations with with Adventure Fields, and I like the Adventure Fields. If this is a hint that Adventure Sonic is on its way back, I'm totally on board.

And Sonic has never had good multiplayer. The closest it got was Sonic 4 Episode II, and everyone just ignores that game anyway, thinking it's the same as Episode I even though it's a totally different and actually good game.

Presumably only a few characters have the ability to use the Emeralds like that. Chaos can do it because he is (kinda maybe implied to be) a chao and they can absorb energy from shit. Shadow was specifically created to use them to defeat Black Doom, Emerl is also created to absorb the energy from things, and Sonic is the chosen one or whatever. Tails can't actually use the Chaos Emeralds (he needs the Super Emeralds) and Super Knuckles… seems to have just been forgotten about. Even when Pachacmac and his tribe were trying to abuse the emeralds, they needed the Chaos Rings to actually harness their power. Likewise, Eggman needs to build machines to harness their energy.

And then there's Silver. Idk why he can use them. Before '06 you could have said that Knuckles could use the emeralds but only two people can use them at a time, hence Tails and Knuckles only doing some half-super thing in Heroes. Then they specifically say Chaos only used the dark energy from the emeralds, and it's easy enough to figure Shadow was doing that too (even though he's good by that point, he still represents "Dark"). But '06 fucked that up when all 3 just went Super at the same time anyway. Unless it was some deal where they were fighting him at different times since he's a time god or something, but it's been a decade and I forget, and doubt they were smart enough for that.

The Biolizard was just a prototype, though, not the actual Ultimate Life Form. Shadow is then called that but Sonic matches him and seems to more closely match the legends that Shadow was presumably based on.

And '06 isn't hard to understand and not even implied to be a reboot if you actually play it. The Blaze shit is stupid but that's clearly a case of Sonic Team not giving a shit about games they didn't make. Alternatively, you could say it's an alternate universe Blaze, since Rush Blaze is literally from an alternate universe.

And the closest Sonic ever gets to having emotions is probably Unleashed more than Rush.

06's biggest problems didn't come from the Hub world. it was mostly the massive loading times for everything and Unleashed had the werehog slowing everything down.

If this is just regular sonic then the hub world coming back sounds great.

Everything is canon except Boom, which is explicitly an alternate universe, and Spinball, which references SatAM so you could say it's that universe. I still wanna count Spinball though since it's good.

Yeah, only male hedgehogs have gone super, except for that one time Knuckles did, but that can be chalked up to gameplay only and not seen as a canon element of what happened in that story. Mecha Sonic used the Master Emerald, Chaos and Emerl were using different methods than Sonic, and Tails needed the Super Emeralds, which probably aren't canon anyway.

I am playing it currently. I want to drop already from amount of instant death this game has. Also tails based gameplay fucking suck, its slow and that pause they make to join together is annoying.
