.dds usually doesn't take up that much space, even if every fucking texture is 4k for whatever reason.

That is the easiest thing to slip past QA, to most people it looks fine, only when reviewing the asset is it blatantly apparent that there's an issue there.


I literally explained it in another thread, and I proved they have 2 fucking layers of compression, both the compressed .dds textures and the .b2a archives, the archives themselves give good compression being about 2/3 the size of the same files uncompressed. The game has a shitload of textures.

They have no fucking compression.

Allow me to show you, these two files are of a brachypelma smithi. They look virtually the same, however the .png is considerably larger than the .jpg, that's because it's completely uncompressed.
You now know why the filesizes for vidya is so fuckhuge.

user, if you export an image compressed, that's how the image stays. You don't need to decompress it when loading.
Well, technically .pngs are also compressed, but they're lossless compression; they retain all detail.
The human eye mostly cannot detect most small details on an image, so .jpg simplifies them through an algorithm.

I can't upload .bmps as Holla Forums doesn't accept them, but strangely the .bmp I just made has the same size as the .png. Usually they're far larger.

That's because one of main techniques of PNG compression is grouping repeating pixels. If they are very varying it won't be as effective. I believe PNG was designed for logos and simple web graphics, but I might be wrong on that. pls correct me

You guys forget those 60gb are all uncompressed 4096x4096 resolution textures. Most games use 2048x2048, and additionally compress them. Fuck, on top of them people add engine generated filters to add detail to the texture, instead of literally drawing that detail on texture itself.

Have you even played Unreal Tournament or Serious Sam? Remember how additional filtering was applied on top of 512x512 textures, making them seem detailed? The technology is evolved much further than those games, but it seems less and less developers care to use it and instead spam uncompressed shit.

alpha is used a fuckton to cut polys down in games. It's a necessity.
I guess you could use .jpg for hard-surface stuff, but now you're working with two image formats.

Not defending bethesda, but .jpg isn't the best contender for texture work by far.

Someone needs to open the diffuse and normal maps in Photoshop and post side-by-side comparisons. My guess is that they only upped the compression format on most stuff. It's what happened with a lot of the Skyrim Special Edition textures.

I don't think this is even a texture issue. Look at the size of those wood grains, they're way too huge. The UV mapping is just garbage and the texture is being displayed at twice or four times the size it's supposed to be seen at.

Guilty Gear Xrd has some textures, but they're mostly just solid colours and anime eyes. The visual designer for the game gave a talk at GDC 2015 about it, and he went into some seriously detail when it came to how they nailed the lighting and cel shading. Highly recommended.
