On another note this boss didn't strike me as sad until I fought him again with the knowledge of what he's doing. In my perspective of my first playthrough all i was doing is wandering the land entering other peoples territories and fucking them upo when they attacked first. This wolf faggot was no different. I was walking through the woods minding my own business getting attacked by beasts and then suddenly a giant wolf comes to fuck my shit up no questions asked. If you just got to Skellige you're probably 1/3th through the game, plot wise.
There's White Orchard, then Velen, then Novigrad, then Skellige, then quests to prepare for Kaer Morhen, then Kaer Morhen, then more quests to prepare for the finale, then the finale, then the epilogue and other post-game content. Then there are the expansion packs which add another 20-30 hours each.

I had a similar experience as you, but I encountered Sif at a really low level for my first playthrough. Most people fight him near the endgame to pick up the covenant, but for me he was really challenging. Combine that with how elegant his moveset is and I just felt a wonderful competition.

I saw him limping because I was doing too little damage to finish him off. To see that made him seem very mortal; the only vulnerable foe in the whole game, even when they were above my level. I really wanted Sif to beat me then because I knew he was better than this failing sight before me, didn't want the battle to stop. From a moveset like his, hammered home by the hard time I had with him, I knew there was more to that wolf than I was aware of. Everything revealed in Oolacile made perfect sense to me, with this in mind.
