ITT Games that are all-around good

What are some games that have good gameplay, good art, good music, good pacing, and if present, good story?

I'll post some examples.

literally reddit: the game

the hitboxes in dustforce aren't very good.
i really liked the game but that's my biggest complaint with it.

The community made it reddit nigger. If the game got no more attention than EYE Holla Forums would be sucking its dick right now. Also good taste OP. How far you in Dustforce?

There's really nothing wrong with them

You're a fucking idiot, good job falling for the "DO I FIT IN YET???" meme.

I must admit I hate how Bastion is such an "artsy" game, and I'll also admit that I really, really like it. The only complaint I have about it is that it sort of gives me the illusion that it has replayability but once you get all the different endings it really doesn't.

Also I'd like to nominate EDF 4.1
I really can't say enough good things about this game. I got into it pretty late, within the last year or so when I first bought 2017 and I'm already a huge fan of the series. I'd give my left testicle to get EDF 5 on PC

There are few games that i consider as such. But in the limits of their genre.

And those two of course.

Would you say that ACE 3 is better than 2? I emulated 2 and fucking loved it but never played 3. I also read on a mecha game infographic from /m/ that 1 is pretty bad

Retards like oxygen too so maybe you should stop breathing

Hitboxes with the environment, enemies, player, or weapon attacks?

I was actually considering posting it but the art style is pretty bad despite how enjoyable it is to look at when shit is exploding. The classes and many enemy designs look like they belong in completely different games (like how are giant ants and the wing divers in the same game?). I think a 50's aesthetic would fit the cheese pretty well.

Haven't even heard of those games so I'll look into them.

DMC3 was in the OP.

...

First one had shitty controls, but it had ability to go underwater and one full underwater level. Had Haman's Qubeley, and few other mechs, which weren't available in later games.

Second started the actual story. Small maps, fast progression, good gameplay.

Third has big koei warriors-style maps, where you can fly to additional locations to beat up bonus enemies. It just generally larger, a lot longer because of those bigger maps, and has best selection of mechs including fucking Getter Robo.

Only ACE2 and 3 are related through the storyline, so its better to play them both.

This may sound like a cop-out, but that's part of the charm for me. Just as the "story" is like a b-movie, I consider EDF to sort of be a b-game. Yes, the conflicting aesthetic of the designs would signify that the art is bad, but, just like a b-movie, what should make it bad is actually what makes it great.

...

Furi

That's all you had to say. Fucking sold

Stop

nominations

user, its a decent game, but some parts of it are just plain trash.

Stranger of Sword City was bretty gud.

b-but I enjoyed that part

I can see what you mean and there definitely is value in that, I'd just rather see it have actual good art direction. To each their own.

I was apprehensive towards this because I heard that between each boss fight there was a 10 minute walking sim bit, can you skip it or speed it up? that music is fucking great though

Gameplay 7/10 needs balance (which it gets from a mod), writing 2/10 are you even trying, art style generic fantasy garbage/10 what the fuck, music 7/10 pretty alright but most of it is forgettable.

zenoclash is fucking shit

Name me a good multiplayer game. A genuinely good one.

Sifting through Steam I'm starting to believe such things don't exist.

You're a faggot but you're correct that Portal isn't all-around good.

Portal is decent but it's easy as fuck with almost no length.

there's your problem, fortunately console games are here to save the day, as usual.
store.steampowered.com/app/366280/

A game doesn't have to be long to be good, it just has to be long to be worth the price.

Quake 3/Live (dead), UT4 (almost dead), Tribes (extremely dead), Trouble in Terrorist Town (only fun with friends because GMOD community sucks), Splatoon, and wait for it here's the mega controversial one Dota 2, provided that you know what you're doing and play with mates. Before anyone types up a 4000 character response that details everything that's wrong with it, don't bother because I'm already well aware of its numerous flaws like RNG and the control scheme. I probably hate them more than you.

Oh yeah and EDF 4.1 is good co-op multiplayer

Portal is around an hour or so of game. If we count its current price of 10 dollars, it's nowhere near worth that money. If it was challenging maybe, but it isn't.

Dead shootans aren't gonna cut it sorry lad. And Dota is bad and you should feel bad.
That being said, how about co-op. Like 4 guy co-op games that are decent on PC. Any ones you can think of?

Zombie survival is more fun and teamwork/skill based than TTT. Shame that gmod's community went to shit.

ITT: Games that you are not allowed to publicly dislike on Holla Forums

You can dislike them. Just don't go off saying their objectively bad games.

E.Y.E. is overrated

You forgot one

an objective flaw is an objective flaw. morrowind and eye are full of them.

People will argue anything, especially when it's a game they like, but Holla Forums is anything but a monolith.

One man's objective flaw is another man's quirky gameplay bug

that's not how it works. One understands the consequence of a shortcoming, the other doesn't get it and accepts it as a quirk. Don't defend retards just because you might be one.

cool your jets pal, I was making a joke about E.Y.E

what?

I wasn't defending retards

Is that version of Valis actually that good? I've played the msx and genesis versions and they're both slow and fucking annoying.

The entire franchise is shovelware.

I tried liking E.Y.E several times, it's way too fucking dull and shitty. Level design is a bunch of boring streets, enemies aren't part of the level design, they just spawn in the background periodically and run towards you like retards. Other enemies are annoying snipers. The whole game when I played it was about following the quest marker and shooting the occasional enemies that spawn. Hacking is very shabby with the rerollable stats and no penalty for failing since you can cancel and retry if you're losing.

Morrowind has shit gameplay (great sound, lore, and art direction though), and wonderful 101 is shovelware-tier.

It's slightly overrated here, but underrated by normalfags (61 metacritic). We can have a happy medium of it being a 7/10 game.

The idea is that good decision make up for flaws that are either to small or minor in comparison. Nobody said you couldn't criticize. It's when faggots come into a thread not knowing how the game works, complaining that it's fucking broken. Or even worse yet just have incredibly shit taste or are incapable of understanding that some games aren't for everyone.

EYE hits a tone rarely met in games. if it was a 5/10 gameplay wise it would still have the batshit plot and an interesting meta story.

I like to look at it through the lens of sort of a weird dystopian cyberpunk Serious Sam mashup with 2deep4u lore and interesting progression system. It took me a few tries to "get" it, but once I did I dumped 30 hours into it and had a blast.

Skullgirls is probably the best example of this, I think.

Great gameplay that's compeitively viable, stellar general visual design and character designs, great music, amazing menu's and UI's, some of the most impressive spritework (if they can even be called sprites) in the medium with some impressive lighting effects that's almost unheard of in 2d games, pretty interesting worldbuilding and lore, and a huge amount of quality of life features

The Halo games as well, with good visual design, for their time usually good graphics, amazing music, both good single player campaigns and full multiplayer suites, and great lore, though the actual in game stories are really only good for the genre, not on their own merits, and obviously Halo is too slow for a lot of people.

Lastly, Asura's Wrath is, as long as you just take gameplay out of the equation entirely and treat it purely as an interactive 3d anime (which it pretty much is intended to be, what with the next time on previews, commercial bumpers, and the missions being called episodes), at which point you have good worldbuilding, a pretty cool art style and god visuals, a great visual aeshetic, really fun, well written characters even if none of them are that complex, great music, some of the best animation you'll find in either 3d anime or vidya, and suprsingly effective writing even if the game's plot is just "punching people in the face in increasingly over the top ways"; I even cried at the DLC ending

Valis is a PC Engine series of games. Mugen Senshi Valis is the remake of first game, with better visuals and animations.

It's still shitposting even if you're doing it on purpose.

God I wanted Darklands so bad as a kid and we couldn't afford it. It's probably too much of a pain in the ass to play now, but damn seeing that cover brings up serious feels.
Is it worth playing now?

It's only anecdotal, but I've seen people on Holla Forums criticise Morrowind, TW101 and especially EYE more often than the other two vidya.

the player/environment, mostly how you can jump off spikes and a few maps where diagonal ledges are actually horizontal hitboxes

Ghost Trick
and all Ace Attorney games

yea no its mediocre and stale at its best, it had one job of being a MvC2 & Darkstalker hybrid but it took the worst from both those titles
hey had good ideas, but the execution was shit

That's not a hitbox issue, that's just buffering an input

I wish i was better at dustforce, i cant do most of the mid-advanced techniques
but u'm also playing on a vita since it makes such a great portable game

i loved bastion, nice gameplay and music
the ending made me cry like a bitch

i wish transistor was good too

Morrowind is commonly agreed to have decent-at-best combat/gameplay which is saved by a fun, broken alchemy mechanic and great world-building.
People say EYE is pretty clunky but it does some shit that, when it clicks, make up for most of the clunkiness.
W101 has the weird minigame-sections that piss off most people, but the whole package is considered great because it's highs more than make up for it's lows.
People on Holla Forums sometimes pan RE for it's tank controls but it's considered GotY in everything else.

TTYD is the only sacred cow in that list.

You take that back you double nigger.

depends on what your looking for but I know a few.

D&D chronicles of mysteria
100% orange juice
Sonic adventure 2…. I guess
Gain Ground can be fun
I think Grim Dawn has co-op now
Double Dragon Trilogy

Remember that Portal cost almost nothing. It wasn't a full-price game.

I want to agree with you but then you put The entire Halo series and not just Combat Evolved, and Asura's Wrath which is such a lackluster game but an awesome anime-like QTE experience. I can't say Asura's Wrath is good all around but it's definitely worth a playthrough just to see how balls out it is. Too bad CC2 can't into gameplay because the visuals were on point.

What's so great about TTYD? It bored me to death when i tried it.

It's alright, I don't remember it being fantastic. Music is good though

You must be retarded. It's fucking awful, had to ask for a refund of my 60 fucking CENTS I spent on the game once. Mind you, I completed the game in one fucking hour.

I kinda wanna stay optimistic for Rune but it's not looking like my kinda game. SuperGiant needs to depart from their comfort zone in their next title. As much as I like a top down fighter with a good narrator, it's getting old.

Life was beautiful

I thought their next game was called Pyre

That's how unoriginal their name is. I don't even fucking remember it. The game uses runes as a central mechanic shown in the trailer, fuck me right?

AreYouSureAboutThat.webm

Ketsui
Dodonpachi (Daioujou)

F.E.A.R.

Isn't that like a single stage game?

Best dungeons, combat, music, writing, art design and casinos in the series

Yes. It's an arcade type game with high scores and shit so more stages aren't needed. People are mad that it's not Doom 2.0 though and that the dev didn't spend years on it despite it being perfectly finished.

Fuck off with your whining

Yea, though it is more of an arcade survival mode game that gets tougher the longer the game lasts, which might sound shitty depending on how you look at it. I have to say it is more than suitable within the context of the gameplay, it's not some glaring design flaw.

R.I.P., Clover. They were amazing.

There is a button for auto-walk, and the walking segments are a couple minutes long. You can just get up and get a drink and come back. I actually sort of enjoyed them

I'll probably get some flak for Space Marine, but I think it did what it was supposed to do more than reasonably well.

I lol'd. Then again, this could reasonably well be the title of an actual JPRG.

Spacemarines final boss was shit compared to the Ork one and you know it. Otherwise I'd agree.

Can't argue with that. I'd have expected more from fighting an embryonic daemon prince.

RE's tank controls aren't bad, they're exactly right for the kind of game it is. The problem is that they feel bad, you're supposed to be scared because it's hard to survive.
W101's main problem is, as is the case with a lot of Platinum games, the fact that it doesn't explain itself well. There's a few things they expect you to figure out on your own or aren't clear from the given explanation at least they weren't to me at first, which speed up gameplay a LOT.

I sure as fuck didn't like the gameplay, but the soundtrack is good.

It's about 1 and a half minutes, not ten.
If that's still a problem to you you can just download someone else's save and play all the boss fights in practice mode.

The thing is that you could argue that finding the gameplay mechanics to speed things up is part of the fun.

That's a problem?

It can be kind of a problem when the game itself doesn't really do anything to make sure you have the grip on a mechanic, like how parrying was handled in MGR. Parrying itself was fine, but it did a horrible job of teaching you how to do it considering the tutorial was rather vague and most of the initial challenges you'd face could be beaten without ever having to parry, up until you reached Blade Wolf or Monsoon where most people threw their controllers at the screen asking themselves what they are doing wrong, much like how dodging was handled in relation to Mastiff grabs.

It looks so great every time I see that blade. It put me in a state– a state of shock

near perfect, well rounded games.

Not to everyone, but quite a lot of people will decide that the game's just not fun if the mechanics they are taught aren't enough to comfortably play the game. That's why a lot of AAA shit has so much handholding, but that's obviously not good either.
Best solution whenever possible is to have something that pretty clearly signifies that it requires the thing you want the player to know, which opens an area with some loot chest, and then later on have it required to progress with some optional NPC interaction that can explain how to do the thing. But that's hard in some cases, I guess.

Bastion did not have good gameplay.

I disagree.

Bastion's gameplay is incredibly boring.

I agree. I also very disliked the narrator. His accent was too fake and distracting.

I never like Bastion. Portal Prelude is better than the real game and I never played Dustforce.

Supcom: FA is the better game for PvP (i.e. strictly in terms of gameplay) but it never quite had the same spark for single player.

Ok, but The Thousand Year Door is actually perfect.

What's so great about Link's Awakening?

It's one of the only real RPGs on the market. A literal "You can do anything" game, except real.

Nah the P2s had better writing.

Darklands has bad graphics though, so you can't say it's good in all aspects.

It's time to re-install Deus Ex.

Might wanna kill yourself.

...

Both are wrong, faglord

All the kirby games are generally good.

...

Epic Yarn exists

its the best Zelda game.

I need to play Darklands soon.

>serviceable combat

I think it looks good, but then again I have a soft spot for that kind of pixel art.

Pic related for me. I can't wait for Ys 8 to come west. I wanna import, but I'm gonna be patient for this.

Mah nigga

My nigga. Good shit. And the sequel is fun for the coop. I wouldn't call it an all-around good game though. It's very niche.

Nominating

This. One thing is piss-easy gameplay. Another one is to be fucking unable to lose the damn game
It was cute as hell though, i'll admit it

Such is life.

Pharoah Rebirth+ has:

It's shallow in terms of what your character can do, but there are dozens of enemy types; moving and attacking both feel snappy, and the levels never overstay their welcome. The customizable difficulty is good, too, although I wish there were more ways of making the game harder without simply increasing the numbers.

Take 20 minutes to download an emulator + a ROM and see for yourself. It has just the right mix of good dungeons, an open overworld, wacky townsfolk, old Nintendo polish, and player freedom.

All of those except for Rayman Gold are Dreamcast games. God bless that system.

I'd call it bait if it didn't have dmc3 in it
now you're just being retarded

Huh, that actually looks pretty fun. Gonna try it out for a while.

I wish Felghana's PC port was updated to the PSP's standards. The gallery mode, QoL improvements and new game plus options would be something I'd like to get my hands on.

You're right, the Dreamcast had Rayman 2, which also fits the criteria.

Best version at that, it doesn't look as good as the PS2 enhanced port but it has more content.

EYE is usually agreed to be a meme game, sometimes not necessarily a good one.

Didn't PS2 have an actual hub though? That trumps it for me tbh content or no.

Explain what you mean by meme game. The game produced memes but it's also good.

By meme game it's got wacky shit and occasionally interesting shit anons talk to death about and regurgitate ad nuesem, but it's mediocre at best as stated

At best it's got some neat ideas hampered by half assed execution with no polish.

Bullshit, nobody has a soft spot for terrible pixel art.
I love Danklands but the combat screens were clunky and gross by every standard, even back then.

It's got little polish but I find the gameplay excellent. Environments looked great, the levels were fucking insane and it gave me a Serious Sam level of wacky weapons. Different Strokes I guess.

I was heavily disappointed. It didn't help that the narrator made Kirby sound like a fucking slow child.

he never said that

Learn to read imageboard

I really can't get into Bastion. I might be the only one but I really disliked the narrator.

Strange because I liked him in Primordia.

Kirby Super Star

Oddword was fucking boring as hell. Zenoclash was okay, but not worth finishing.

Sunless Sea is a good time killer. A cozy game with a lot of reading.Looking forward to the sequel.

Deadpool is just stupid fun. A good example of what can be made when corporate fucks off.

...
