We had eight or ten people through last night. It was kind of interesting to watch.

No one chatted much, most people began exploring immediately. Two people were killed by other players, one of them as soon as he zoned in. No one has teamed up thus far, that I can tell. Main two activities so far have been exploring and player killing.

There is no power trip. There is a desire to do a little experiment, and a desire to perhaps meet some new people, talk with people a bit more, explore ideas. I'm not really into the gaming itself, more in seeing what people do with this space (if anything.) It is ancient, old, been-there, done-that gaming software from a bygone era, so to see it go nowhere would not be surprising, for that reason alone. But maybe it will. Lots of relatively shitty things take off, because they hit a nerve of some kind.

Walkran is definitely shitty, but it's also a challenge, in that it is unknown, it is chaotic, there are no rules, and .. Holla Forums gets a head start into it all.

Is that incentive enough to bang in a few levels and rule the whole entire game, forever, as a running joke? Could other web communities be goaded into trying to storm into the game, en masse, to try and avoid the instagib at login? Or is it just some shitty coffeemud spinoff that no will ever log into again?

I don't even really know what zones are in walkran: I slammed in eight or ten levels, some noob ones and some higher ones. I don't even know what is out there, in terms of armor, weapons, or whatever. I have no idea what players can do. It is as much of a mystery to me as to anyone. I will continue to add the good pre-existing content I can find, in a "jam it in and make sure the portal works" sort of way, so the game will just continually expand, chaotically.

Win or fail, I'll say this: it is damned neat to have a little telnet window open, fucked up fonts and all, where anything could happen. It could remain static for days, OR I could see a rush of ten or fifteen people. In that, Walkran is already stupidly fun for me.

So, a few players have come and gone. Walkrann, with two R's, is ihatenigs, I am pretty sure. The prime noob zone is east of first portal, with another one off of the second portal. There is also a portal to Hell in there somewhere and you do not want to be going there.

A level 6 warrior is patrolling and killing anyone he sees, and no one is past level one, so if you come in, beware.

The wrigglers are not meant to be killed. They are Walkran's spirit-totem animal ward guardians.

So Walkran evolved a bit. It's a bit more political and technical in tone, in some spots. There are new areas, mobs, a merchant, and more gear possibilities. There is a bank, and for one person, the opportunity to buy a plot of land right in the center of Walkran (for cheap!)

We have had a few players through, fairly regularly, though it seems like there is a rule about there being more than three on at a time. Three leave, two or three new come, but before anymore come, those three must leave. It's weird.

Walkran proper is on one level, the connecting portals are below. The newbie zones are east of the first and second portals, and the rest, I really don't know myself. There is portal there that will get you into an almost instant-death type situation, so avoid that one.

The game is to figure out the game, to help determine its path, to participate in the worldbuilding, to fuck around a bit, to figure out the game mechanics, to have fun .. perhaps ultimately, for some group, to rule the whole whole with an iron fist, or do something else with it. Who knows.

It's a big world to explore and there are no maps. Highest levels in game can be achieved in very little time, so there is no power gap yet. There is a guild now and they are working through some of the post newbie zone content already. PvP has died down immensely, it is pretty friendly. For the time being.

Old tech, quickly put together on the cheapest vps available, thrown into operation with a loose mandate, poor quality control and a lighthearted, "hell, maybe it'll be fun" sort of spirit. It's about as raw a gaming environment as you can get. Also, I don't care where it goes - I am only interested in seeing it go somewhere, and seeing how it goes there. It will evolve in whatever direction it evolves in (or die off.)

In looking at your SS it seems like your terminal emulation might be off. That was what I was going to suggest, although that's a longshot for just locking up like that.

We have a vps issue that lags you for ten to twenty seconds, occasionally, suspected to be java related. Our VPS has been upgraded and will be rebooted when all the players (who don't have these difficulties) log out tonight.

According to the MUD I'm being rejected for too many invalid connection attempts. Every line starts with a music note, too. Is that intentional or is it not configured properly?

That error leads me to believe it thinks you have tried to log in too many times from your ip. i will take a look and see, but it should go away in a little while. Or cycle your vpn.

The music is probably some MXP shit going on, and I bet you are the first player to use a client that supports it. I will figure out how to turn it off. Thank you for the bug report.

Not actualy music. Every line starts with a music note character. I've never seen it in any other MUD that I've connected to.

I tried terminator and xterm and i do not get that note. I'd guess terminal emulation, but if you get it on no other muds.. I'd then guess extended mud codes that your terminal does not support.

I asked all the players and no one gets this. I did nuke all extended protocols but that's probably not it.

FUCK, I got it. Whatever coffeeMUD does, it's supposed to be sending information on some separate band that is supposed to display on the last line of the console at all times. This works fine until it asks me for a password, at which point "Enter a password:" sticks there and covers up whatever is supposed to be there, so I have to guess at what the next command is supposed to be.

There doesn't seem to be much here. The only thing i've been able to kill is a beaver.

You can hit level 10 by going no more than 10 or 12 spaces from the zone in, and you can do it afk once you know how. There are 1400 areas across 30 some zones, and growing. No one in-game has explored more than 20%, and we have 10+ players now. Anyone who get 50 gets permanent light. No more f'n torches.

You have to try a little, though. You have to read. No one is going to say "HEY, newbie, the newbie zone is Down, Down, South South, East'ish" from the entrance. It's not that simple.

You're on someone's cut and paste social experiment MUD and you're asking for tech support? Also, your client is configured wrong, If the MUD was sending that line it would be scrolling with the rest of the buffer, you fucking retard.

We hit ten users last night at peak usage. There is definitely a prime time, evenings MST.

Here are some further thoughts:

(1) I am thinking of extending real world game benefits to people in the game. For example, regular players might get shell access, or web space, or email, when they get a certain level. The entire VPS is devoted to the concept of walkran and there is no reason it must confine itself to "just the game." Of course there are major abuse issues with this, but maybe it could work. More or less I am willing to do anything with that server to service walkran: that's all it does, so all of its resources can be used for user benefit (the running mud, or web host space for the users, or whatever.)

(2) In game, real world prizes, where single prize tokens are created, placed, and are redeemable for real world goods. Kill the dragon, get the token, win an ounce of silver (or an odroid, or whatever.) I need to think much further on this one but I like the idea that people could, rarely, profit a little bit from time spent in the world.

(3) The display of real world content, in-game. Simply, ten rooms with descriptions and objects that convey key topics from /x/ or Holla Forums, More complex, an RSS feed of news/conspiracy sites: leave the window open, scan for news. Use walkran as an old school rss reader, with built-in community chat. (Anyone who can deliver the RSS feed feature gets a level 15 account.)

I have been playing through the game content and, it's cool and all, in an old school sort of way, but if I were not the owner of the site and were going to use this regularly, I'd need more reasons to do so. I LIKE old school mudding but for me, it is probably not quite enough.

But, RSS news feeds blasted at me, so i could keep up to sped on the world while semi-afk leveling my monk? The possibility of winning a cash prize? The possibility of walking through a few rooms, and being able to read about, oh, I don't know, the kybalion, or a summary of pizzagate? Getting access to hidden discussion boards? A private ftp server?

There are many faggots here but there are sages too, and I want those sages to hang out on my playground and help me build something weird and cool. I hope to do so by providing something that cannot be found elsewhere, a mishmash of work, play, fun, chaos, information, learning, and chan culture .. all operated in a "let's just light that fucker up and see what happens" sort of style.

Lastly, our VPS has apparently been upgraded with more RAM (for the third time), so we will be rebooting today or tonight (for the third time.) The Walkran wave may soon be no more.

The RAM upgrade is complete. The VPS guys did not inform me of the reboot, so my notice was being kicked out of the game, along with a few of you.
At least it is done, memory looks normal now, so .. I believe the Walkran Wave is gone. Hopefully no more lag.

One thing the Walkran experiment has taught me is the extent to which people will be negative, just for the sake of being negative. I am no stranger to faggots, but this is a new level of.. something.

One guy comes in with a racist name. He shouts a few epithets. I let him do this, free speech and all, I HATE censorship. And then I try to engage in an actual conversation, because the racism does expose real issues, even if some get their panties wadded over how some choose to express it. I overlooked the immature approach, was friendly, and gave the guy a chance to speak. I actually told an anecdote that supported what he said, so I went even FURTHER than just tolerating him, I actively and helpfully tried to engage.

What does he do? He goes silent, and calls me a faggot on a discussion board. He didn't even carry on talking, or trolling or anything.. just, posted faggot on a discussion board, all for my sin of overlooking his idiocy and trying to turn his shit comments into actual discussion. You need to telnet to port 5555 on walkran.com, using either telnet, or a mud client. It's a text based game, the website is just a static update page.

The server will be up for a year, minimum. If I have five people who play, it will stay up indefinitely. A few of my web communities have been destroyed and if a community develops, I can and will do my part.

Well of course players would fuck up a traditional MUD. Why would I expect something else. Cool idea and project, OP, but I wish there were new MUDs that were just normal. They're either entrenched old crusty servers, or periodic new variants that never get more than 1 player simultaneously, or something like this where it just devolves into the luls immediately.

Actually, in game, we have had exactly one troll, the one we're talking about. It has not devolved at all. This morning we were discussing careers in I.T.

No it's definitely alive. We had an issue a little while ago where it seemed like dns for the domain stopped working for say, 45 seconds, and then the game was weird for a minute or two. Transient godaddy weirdness? VPS Server oversubsciption hiccup?

Walkran is not going down any time soon. IF it is down, it will be back up. You can read updates at walkran.com. We have five or six regulars now (level 15-20) and are going to open the game up to a new community in about one week. Not sure which community yet, if anyone has ideas, feel free to throw them out.
