I have different favorite gens for different things, but if I had to choose one overall I'd probably go Gen 3: Abilities, nice map, good story, solid music, great cover legends, Colosseum. I haven't played Gen 4 or Gen 5 yet.

The first shiny Pokemon I ever encountered was motherfucking shiny Entei in Crystal. Of course it ran away before I could catch it. I'm still pissed about that. The first one I caught was a Sandshrew in Emerald. I also lucked out and got pokerus in the same save.

Sapphire but S/M was probably the most I enjoyed the franchise since I was a kid. The cast more then makes up for its slower starting pace.

I haven't played any of the new games since Soul Silver but I'm tempted to get a 3DS just so I can play Sun/Moon. At first I dismissed them but then I looked into it and it seems like they've made some actual innovations. They even improved on the Pokemon designs compared to the garbage that came out of the last few gens. For the first time in years I'm actually excited for a Pokemon game.

I just finished my 2nd playthrough of moon today. The ending goes on forever, but I feel empty at the end after Lillie leaves. I wasn't even a big fan of the character, but the last two photos in the credits of her and Lunala, and the photo of you, Lillie, and Hau made me feel sad.

They're still objectively better then the fuck all nonexistent difficulty that plague all the 3DS Pokemon games. It had good base gameplay and good bosses. Because just touching a mon or attack reset your progress, you had to think quickly and adjust to attack patterns.
IMO, Ranger was one of the best uses of the touch screen on the DS.

Also I hope they tie the Ultra Beasts into Missingno somehow. With the VC releases of the old games and the story of Sun/Moon literally being about some weirdo ripping holes in the world and letting strange beings slip through the cracks, they're in the perfect position for it.
