So I don't know why everyone feels like they're the ones being fucked when their own chosen console decides to do the same. You don't see Xbox players threatening to throw firebombs or boycotting over the price of Xbox Live, even though the cost has gone up several times since Xbox Live began.

When the X1 was supposed to block used games, we had everyone else shitting on them. On top of that it's really hard to defend something like blocking used games, and there was no precedent.
In this case, Nintendo are just doing what everyone else is doing. PCfags don't care, and X1/PS4fags complaining about it would be hypocrisy, since they didn't complain about their platforms adopting it. You'd have to work really hard to make as much noise. One possible way to combat paid online (and not just for Nintendo either) is to set up private servers for games.
Someone mentioned before in another thread that the probable reason that Nintendo did a a big reversal on region locking was because of so many people modding their consoles to play Japanese games. Private servers might cause the same effect.

There aren't. The only "private servers" are servers that facilitate the matchmaking for DS and Wii games. You realize that every online Nintendo game doesn't use servers to host games, right? It's all P2P hosting with Nintendo's servers only serving to handle handshake procedures and whatnot.

To be fair while not "gimped" there are some moments where some games crap themselves if too much is going on. I'm more impressed how well the Wii U does when the hardware is kinda shit, Nintendo must optimize their games pretty well. It's not like anyone else is making games for it, though.

The Gamecube online was limited to like 4 games? The PS2 online limited to like 10? The Xbox has done online since the day it came out.

Look, Satan, it's 2017. It's the CURRENT YEAR. Everyone else on the planet has proper online support. Even EA does a better job with origin, and that's saying something. Nintendo has no excuse for the piss poor job they're doing.

That said, I think they're within their right to charge for online. I have disputes with their console design and implementation choices, but it's their business and they'll run it as they see fit. The de facto standard is, if you game on a closed platform, you pay to play online. Nintendo continues to operate at a loss, they're losing money all the time, they want to make it up by implementing an online subscription. Can't blame them, they keep putting money into money holes, this is probably the first smart idea they've had. How is it that a Nintendo defense force can run their mouths about "not being poor" and "being able to afford the latest and greatest from Nintendo" and then in the same breath shit in their hand and fling it at people over Nintendo asking for fees for online play?

I actually don't really either in a direct sense. I am and always have been a single player guy. I'm even that guy that plays fighting games for the single player story mode.
What I DO care about is what paid online could mean for my single player games. Paid online is basically pure profit so companies have a great deal of motivation to lock features and even game modes behind paid multiplayer. For example imagine if the next Donkey Kong Country has no couch multiplayer and locks playing as a Kong buddy behind online multiplayer.
Then there's games like the Souls games and clones that have integrated multiplayer. I plan on getting Nioh when it comes out but since I refuse to pay for PS+ the integrated features effectively don't exist for me. If I didn't enjoy the single player so much then that would likely impact when or if I got the game.

Also paid online is likely a slippery slope in the direction of always online. You have to stop this shit at the beginning if you want to stop it at all.

And now Nintendo is following suit, complete with online services being subscription based! Also Nintendo's online isn't handled by Nintendo anymore, it's being handled by DeNA, who are probably much better at it. So they probably had a say in the idea that online services need to be gated.

Yes. The Switch is a fucking glorified tablet with TV-out built into its docking station. It'll probably have a weak ass pussy Atom chip, which is why it will be portable. You can run Skyrim on it, but Skyrim is fuck all nowadays you can play Skyrim on NVidia's SHIELD.

I think that the Switch is a "solution" that isn't going to solve anything, and the real solution would have been a Wii-U Pro which provided an actual competitive processor and GPU and brought the performance up to 60 fps at up to 4K, provide people with reason to keep their Wii-U library while providing room for better Wii-U games, get back into the race instead of calling it. Instead it's another $250 console in Gen 8.

Maybe Nintendo will make a WiiU 32X or something.
