I played FO4 recently too, and it's not a shitty game in any way. Note: I boycotted it too when it came out. But I replayed both FO3 and FO4, and I realized I've been harsh on bethesda out of nostalgia. They have not the shitty writing I remembered (played Fo3 when I was around 16, read the blistering stupidity of FO3 a couple years ago and I made my opinion about the game with that).
FO4 is an improvement under all fronts. The only problem is the dialogue wheel, but I understand why it was implemented, it's simply better than long lines in that kind of dialogue mechanic.
Lore wise, FO4 stretch things a bit, but it fits.

-T-60 are basically T-45 with T-51 implementations (like reflecting plating). I assume that converting a T-45 into a T-60 cost as much or less than a T-51, but building a T-60 from scratch costs more. T-51 is still the apex, T-60 isn't really a new or cost-efficient armor.
-Jet has ALWAYS been a pre-war drug. Myron in Fo2 says that. It was produced by mutated bacteria. Myron re-discovered the drug in the brahmin shit. Considering the fact that he knows the drug history it's easy to assume he got a hold on documents about Jet. What Myron did was to seletionate the bacteria to have a version of Jet that is both not dangerous and highly addictive.
-Fusion cores are 200 years old. The shit inside of them is decayed.
-All around the commonwealth you can read about research teams talking with government representatives (the future enclave) about evacuation. So X.01 and vertibirds can be there. Some lines here and there hint about enclave operating in the zone after the war too.

I've been playing the game myself, kids got it for Christmas. I can kinda agree with you, power armor at least feels like power armor now and combat is actually fun and bit more challenging than it was even in NV. The story is still retarded though and the companion AI is even more abysmal than in previous games. Also there's hardly any weapons, the justification being you can mod them how you like but the mods don't do much and the final tier ones pretty much combine the different ones into one, mainly recievers, so there's no point anyway in having different receivers. Settlement building is completely gimped, you make a small house and some fences and you're at max cap, also from what I've seen the turrets don't fucking do anything anyway. There's no morality, only hint of your actions even having the slightest effect is the notification that'll pop up on your screen saying " " disliked this. The dialogue options have no effects whatsoever either, doesn't matter if you're an asshole or a goody two shoes. The vault dlc is broken because the settlement building is broken, can only really build your vault in the main area unless you want everyone to step out of it to go on walkways down to the next area which defeats the whole point. Power armor is level listed so if you only found a couple before reaching a high level and you want to make a collection you can't, you'll only get X-01 for the most part along with occasional T-51s, that's just been my own experience though. Most of the buildings dotting the map are boarded up so hardly any exploration either, and the only reason for exploration in this game is to pick up every piece of junk you see so you can build shantytowns on sticks because building on uneven ground will have the fucking structures float and be inaccessible to anyone else. AI pathfinding is shit both for settlers and companions so trying to build anything off the ground is pointless anyway because they literally can't go on stairs for whatever reason. So on and so forth, rest of my criticisms I already posted. For everything

The combat was done by ID, who have experience on it and now slave away for Zenimax\Bethesda. That's why it feels like it has some quality in it but the rest of it is shit, like the mods that allows you to make very different weapons except not because Bethesda is terrible at late game stuff.

The settlement mechanic has got to be the most under developed feature in a videogame from that year. Even the caravans that take a perk because reasons and are hidden behind a button you can barely see on the settlement menu, do nothing but let you use what you stashed in one settlement with another.

The entire game could have been based around that settlement and the point and theme of the game be "Reconstructing civilization". It could have been a steady source of caps and resources as long as you settle and install facilities to produce\transform resources and caravans that trade them, leaving a small amount of caps in a strongbox somewhere. You could even have said resources and caps disrupted by raids, giving a purporse to defense.
You could have thematic settlements depending on the faction you joined, including raider settlements.

And yet nothing of that was done, most likely because they expect modders to pickup the slack.

i haven't played for the railroad that long so I don't know what they do to synths. You can have harmless synths as settlers though. Also, escaping synths are just rampant machines like most of the robots in the fallout universe. They are not AI. So it's coeherent for a synth to become a raider, they are malfuctioning machines.

Again, the institute does influence the wasteland. Those that are technological feats in other parts have easy know how in the commonwealth. Why do they educate raiders? Who know, maybe to set up some more chaos that helps them being hidden. Maybe the raider block access to facility the institute want to protect. Maybe those people turned into raiders after fixing a power armor.
The settlers mentality is, if I have nothing to defend myself with, they have no reason to fight me. And it's like that: settlers usually complain about raiders extorting shit from them. That's not true about supermutants though. Bethesda do love supermutants so much, but they never try hard to implement them in a smart way.

I really found it nice how the rogue Minutemen were characterised. You go to that dead ship island, and on top you see a record of a group of minutemen running around and trying to help at first, and after understanding that they don't get shit from it eventually turning raider. The traitor at Quincy did pretty much the same thing, only he joined the Gunners.

The reason companions say Maxson is fucked up is because he is all battle all the time and no diplomacy at all. His airship arrival was pretty much a declaration of war, you can very easily gain settlements for them by killing the settlers and his tendencies for destruction even prevent him from hoarding tech like he is supposed to. There is no reason to blow up the institute instead of taking their tech.

There are no RPG elements. Skills and attribute checks are mostly non-existent, and virtually all quests boil down to "pick good or evil choice", most of them not even featuring any sort of choice even.

Also bullshit that power armor is ALSO simply handed to the player like 30 minutes into the main story (if even that long). No earning it, you don't even need power armor training anymore.

Also if Shaun did want to have one big happy family by way of Synths, why only make one parent, stick him where his corpse use to be, and hope he figures out how to get to your super secret nerd kingdom. Hell, I just figured out an alternative story that works out way better.

The Father is some Pre-war baby remaking the life he never had by sticking synths in a suburb that has everything Ala Tranquility Lane minus the german loli sadits. But one day something fucks up and everyone else "Dies" (have it be everyone shuts down for maintenance but you don't get the shut down signal) and you have to escape via an access maintenance tunnel. From there you have to find a way to get out of the institute at which point you're thrust into the hellscape that the game normally is (and is worried about in the simulation). Then on you have to deal with being hunted by the Institute (rather then them showing up half way through), discrimination against synths where you either prove you're good for some strained trust, or murder hobo everyone.

The paths would branch out to first finding out you're really a synth by visiting Vault 111 and finding you and your wife's corpse, which could lead you to finding Kellogg, who in turn causes you to get back into the institute to confront the Father, who'd in turn leave control of the institute to you since he's dying and could act as the Independent end. Could have no indication to go the Vault 111 either and have it be a secret ending.
Brotherhood would be about capturing the institute and either destroying it or convincing the Elder to keep it for Brotherhood research and development and you get made an honorary knight once it's all said and done.
Railroad would involve getting out of the commonwealth ala Harkness and others or staying to help out.
Minutemen would be the one all about uniting the world and destroying the institute.
Or hell have the become a Raider and tear everything the fuck down option.

But all of that would take clever writing, and not just jerking off the player. Thanks for triggering my autism into writing way a better game then a professional team OP, you asshole.

It's not fun because enemies are fucking braindead, combat is mediocre as all hell (especially in melee), and power armor is just a novelty that doesn't introduce anything worthwhile to the gameplay through its implementation.

Not really, while the gun play is much improved and the action key (why Grenade and melee are tied to the same button we'll never know, probably controllers) everything seems to get in the way of fun. The Power Armor chews through Fusion cores for no reason other then to balance them for early game and cripple the at late game.
Weapons are way too weak against everyone, even upgrading the damage perks. Which also bites into the fun aspect as nothing has ever done Action Adventure RPG well outside of the RPG aspect being getting utility items (ala Zelda or Darksiders 1). And upgrading, while suppose to be a deep system boils down to trade damage or odd utility like scope for weight.
There's the radiant quests that never fucking end and bog you down until you learn to ignore them and their fucking pittance.
And even ignoring all of that shit which is hard or modded out, you have to constantly manage inventory so you can build shit whether it's guns or a pretty base. It seemingly does everything in it's power to make the game less fun, which is damn ironic considering Bethshitsda always masturbates to the idea of focusing on the player character.

I'm not trying to make the point it's a great game or anything like that, just that it's good for some mindless fun. As a shooter, I enjoy it more than most.

Yeah the AI blows, except when they're throwing molotovs and grenades at you, then they're fucking psychic. Melee combat can be kinda dull in first person, but if you play it in third person then it becomes more fun and feels more like an action game than a failed RPG. Plus there are special melee animations that you can only see in third person for some retarded reason. As for power armor, it adds some stuff that's fun for rip and tear gameplay. Increased defense is a big one, but also the ability to fall any distance and land in the middle of your enemies is great, like jumping off a tall building or an above-ground interstate onto a patrol. And the rad resistance is handy too. I should mention that I liked the game a lot better when they added a proper survival mode. The need for food, water and sleep was nice, but the biggest improvement was in combat. Before, easy difficulties were piss easy and hard ones just made every enemy into a bullet sponge. The new survival makes combat lethal for you and your enemies, though you still run into the occasional annoying bullet sponge.

in all fairness, there is an AI mod that makes the enemies actually genuinely smart in that if there's just one he'll do his best to suppress you and get to safety, and if there's more than one they'll work together to flank you, flush you out with grenades etc, and if i remember correctly the guy who made it only had to change like one line of code. let that sink in: the developers were either that close to genuinely good AI, or intentionally hamstrung it for the retard audience

I never had a problem with fusion cores and I wore power armor nonstop from the moment I got it, except when upgrading it or sleeping. The best way to conserve them is to just not sprint unless it's necessary in combat, because that drains them like nothing else.

Weak weapons are fucking annoying, but the updated survival mode did a lot to fix that. It multiples the damage of all weapons, so they feel proper. A headshot will actually kill a raider, instead of needing to put three magazines into their skill before they notice.

I liked the upgrade system personally, but I really enjoy the "survival" experience of having to scavenge for things to survive and eventually thrive. Though granted, that experience doesn't last very long.

Radiant quests are bullshit after a pointbut I never bothered with those anyway., besides doing some for the Brotherhood and those were alright. Minutemen are fags.

And I know it's a matter of taste, but I like inventory management. I don't think I should be able to carry 500 pounds of bullshit at all times, and I like building a hideout to stash things, and deciding on a loadout (what weapons I'm bringing, how much ammo I need, how much food and water I'll need, etc) before heading out on a mission. But I get that some people want a more traditional experience where you can just carry all your weapons and ammo and everything else.

I haven't played DMC since 2, so you've got me there, but I do like FO4 more than DOOM. DOOM is definitely a better shooter, but I like the other aspects of it in FO4, the "meter managing" ones. Keeping your health up is also meter managing, user, even if they don't put a meter in the UI. I'm gonna say again though that the power armor does more than minor stat changes though, it's honestly my favorite implementation of power armor in any Fallout game.

You seem to forget that this wasn't meant to be a game, so much as Babies first RPG. When you think of it like that it starts making a lot more sense. No numbers, black and white morality, extreme hand holding. Hell it's simpler then some kids games even.

The problem with PA is that it's needless busy work for no reason that actively fucks with the lore. Early prototype example were worked out to run dry after 100 years of extraneous activity but that was fixed for latter models. The T-51 and Enclave both had on board reactors that would power them indefinitely more or less. And the T-60 even being a thing and Enclave PA being Pre-war are both absolutely Haram. Plus it's not like Bethesda didn't know better as NV's hardcore mode is trivialized by swimming in required resources. And not having a sprint is agonizing even if the world is laughably small..

Fallout and Stalker get pointlessly compared all the time, no reason to justify it by needing to play on the hardest difficulty to do damage. Survival mode also just adds in more tedium so it's not really worth it, especially when it can be modded to just do that extra damage.

All the "survival" stuff is neat at first but there's no real way to circumvent it late game so it's just tedious bullshit you NEED to do.

At least you recognize radiants as the piece of crap they are. At least you can decide to ignore Preston and just head to Diamond City once you know where it is.

I like inventory management too, but for the purposes of being able to horde as much vendor trash as I please. The issue that arises Vendor trash is expanded to everything and you just constantly get bogged down with shit that you have to go through and figure out what you need. and it bogs. Doesn't help there's no way to really increase your carry weight either.

It all adds up to bog down and detract from fun. Far Harbor was as close as they came to fixing it due the radiation everywhere and there not being places you need to spruce up yourself besides a home or two you can get.

None of bethesda fallout have been create-your-MC rpgs. You have to put yourself in the character's shoes, otherwise some part of the story are just silly. I mean, few players would put the fev in the purifier, but if you look at things as a stranded and terrified teenager that is still attached to and really misses the vault, then killing all muties to make your house and family safer is a reasonable option.
In FO4 it's the same, you have to put yourself in the shoes of a desperate and broken father. A voiced character makes it easier.

Even the completely predictable "No John, You Are The Synths" plot would have been better than the pile of shit we actually got.

Of all the lore rape in fallout 4, this one I think isn't any sort of issue.

We have the word of one bitch in California that all the cats have been hunted down since she was a kid. She's probably 18-40 years old. So if she had a cat as a kid, that means cats survived the bombs, survived FEV, and survived 40-60 years past the events of Fallout 1. In Central California speciifically, or at least the area immediately at and around The Den.

I don't think it's all that unlikely that they survived in other parts of the US, It's a big fucking country, and the commonwealth certainly looks like an easier place for a cat to survive in the wild.

I don't know why people say this. It's patently untrue. Survival mode's damage is 4x damage to player, 0.75x damage to enemies. With an "adrenaline" perk for consecutive kills that will boost the player's damage all they way up to a whopping 1.25x damage at max.

Most of the time, your weapons will be weaker than playing on normal difficulty. It's 50% less spongy than playing on the old survival or current "Very Hard" difficulty, but it's every bit as spongy as playing on "hard".

There isn't any lore rape in FO4. Trust me, I looked for it. The setting is weak around supermutants like FO3, but that's it.

No. I read that around the internet too, when I got frustrated with the triggermen. Triggermen had boosted DR. But if you check with console or mods, player deals x1,75 and enemies deals x2 or something like that. I got to level 40 and I have never met bullet sponges, with the exceptions of behemot, deathclaw, mirelurk queen and bosses. And usualy the game gives you heavy weapons to deal with them. You gotta upgrade armor and weapons. That means also upgrading from laser to plasma, for example.
