So if you know about the Marvel sliding timeline you know that means that instead of going into space during the 60's, the Fantastic Four went up into space "a decade ago" or whatever they claim now, so it'd mean they went up into space in the late 00's or early 10's now. Back in around 1999 or 2000 John Byrne realized the gap was widening and figured someone would try to fill in that gap, so he figured it would be him, and with the help of co-writer Roger Stern, they did this comic. Fan reaction was kind of mixed, some reviewers were harsh on it, and I don't think it did any favors with the Amazing Spider-Man tie-in (I'll get to that later). Tom Brevoort later admitted that he didn't think the characters in the book were really that interesting. But now YOU can read this 20 years later and see if it holds up!The big gimmick to this comic is that it was published starting at #12 and ending at #1, mainly because of the time traveling.
>>116895305Byrne said that this page was the first time he drew the characters, and that he and Stern looked at it, built the characters from there and decided who to focus on.
>>116896136Roger Stern talks about the book, and about everyone else involved with the making of, and also about how the story where the Skrull spy accidentally outs himself was based on a Lee/Ditko story from Amazing Adult Fantasy #7 (the difference is that in the original it wasn't Marvel characters involved)
>>116896619It helps it was colored by Glynis Oliver who'd been coloring for comics since the 70's. I don't know for sure if she did the computer coloring herself but she'd definitely have done color guides. Also I'm struck by how much more readable this looks compared to some comics in the 00's/10's. I mean I still have problems with the story and the storytelling, but at least I can tell most of what's going on.

>>116896651Stern talks about Nick Fury, and then there's fan mail.
>>116896745This is supposed to be the Eternal Brain, who was first introduced in Red Raven Comics #1 in 1940. The story was intended to take place in the far future when it was published, in the far-flung future of the 1980's. Roger Stern decided to include him in Lost Generation for that reason.
>>116896721That explains it, she must be used to render with just hues an not fancy layer effects or brushesStill there is something about this comic that just shouts "the year 2000!">>116896737You're now banned from John Byrne's personal forum
>>116895301I really hate this. I love this as a concept but I hate that all these are OC heroes. This was Marvels chance to give some of their golden at heroes depth and impact on a slightly similar level to JSA but instead we get some literally who's.Like Marvel absolutely has a library of golden age characters besides the invaders that barely get used.
>>116896955>>116896973I feel like part of it came from them starting the book off with killing most of the team, so they couldn't really kill off any of the Golden Age Timely heroes and that's why they created new characters and used a really obscure character (Eternal Brain).
>>116897018but that's something of a paradox, because every character created for marvel is instantly forbidden for being forever killed. I think that the more Byrne-explanation is that he didn't want to disrespect golden age characters, nor mess with their canon

>>116896955>Like Marvel absolutely has a library of golden age charactersStill sad that Marvel canned All-Winners Squad Band of Heroes. Golden Age capes in a Band of Brothers style story was very interesting. Liked the idea that if a hero died in the war, that was the reason their comic book got canned. Very fitting that it went full circle with the book itself.
>>116897190Here's the Eternal Brain story from Red Raven Comics #1, if Stern and Byrne consider it part of the backstory, it would take place before the events of #9 but after #8.
Issue #11 is based on an old 50s marvel story from one of the anthology books

>>116895301Is this anything like the retconned lost X-Men team when they decided they needed Xavier to be eviler and have sent a different test squad of X-Men to their deaths before Giant-Sized X-Men?

>>116897378Yeah now that I think of it, if a team series like this were made in the mid-10's by someone else, they'd probably frontload it with Inhumans before the Fox buyout

>>116897389I think this issue was supposed to take place in the late 70's.
>>116897050dont forget citizen V and the v batallion>>116897018I mean...they aren't getting used anyways. so might as well use them in a meaningful way like Lost Generation did. Have them all sacrifice their lives to save the world and then be forgotten. It would've been much more impactful that way.
Storytiming on 4chan is a bitch, isn't it? Constant google solving captcha. That's why I don't storytime anymore

>>116897649I keep forgetting, does Doctor Strange age slowly? If he does I guess they could get away with him being around that long ago.>>116897652Oh yeah.
