With male characters it's easy to pull off. You can have them pump-and-dump some female character and then carry on with their adventures until said female character appear again with a grown up boy in tow. And there you go, male character now is a papa to a grown boy. If the editors and writers end up getting bored with the new character they can just do away with the boy in some story and never reference the whole thing again. The male character won't come off looking bad because there's this unspoken agreement that raising a kid isn't a man's job.The same thing can't be done with a female character. For one she can't go on adventures with a pregnant belly without looking like a moron. She also can't give up the baby or push it unto another character without looking like a bad mother, and thus a bad woman and a bad heroine. Not to mention that male fans don't like the idea of their waifus being "taken".

But my general experience from real life is that children, especially the first breaks the spirit of a female.
