Gaara's sand control, at least with the sand in his gourd, is straight up telekinesis. There's no need for vibrations, feedback, etc.. He has total control over it and then there's the automatic barrier he has. But on the other hand, Toph can just stomp on the ground and hit him with a rock straight up from the ground. They both have an "advantage" in that neither of them understand each other's abilities going in. The real trump card is just that if Gaara falls unconscious, the one-tail demon takes over. Even if Toph absolutely kicks his ass, shocks him by just bending a rock from the ground to his face right at the start, she then has to deal with a 200-foot-tall-demon.Normal Gaara is a fair fight with Toph the same way normal Gaara is a fair fight with Lee/Neji/Sasuke or normal Aang is a fair fight with Zuko/Toph/Ozai. Sleeping Gaara is like Avatar State Aang, your only shot is to one shot him at the perfect moment or else you're fucked.

How would a relationship between the two work?

Watched Naruto a long time ago but IIRC kid gaara only moved relatively small quantities of sand at max speed while toph can belt giant boulders with a hand gesture.So in a sheer crushing match I think toph has the upper hand but she would be helpless to avoid any sand projectile that was floating above ground.I suppose it would be whoever strikes first. Gaara could just levitate off the ground and snipe her or Toph could hammer his shell from all sides with stalactites.

It's really not a fair fight because of the crazy way the Naruto world is built. Even below average idiots can effectively teleport. That's like, the absolute bottom of the barrel for entry to being a ninja. She has no real way to counter that.

Toph, easily unless you count Kaiju shit. If Toph really wanted to she could bend sand easily, so she can control Gaara's element while Gaara can't control anything but sand. Gaara's biggest advantage over his peers is his 360 degree vision, his basically unbreakable defenses thanks to superhardend sand, and his ability to no-sell speed. All of those strengths are negated by Toph, who can deny his resources so he's without his sand shield, and attack him at range far better than he can attack her at range. Hell, even at close quarters Toph can fight far better than he can.

I remember when I was a kid and I had just recently learned you could read manga on the internet. I'd read a lot of manga irl, but the books were expensive, so even though I'd bought a lot of them, it was nothing compared to the unlimited amount on the internet. We had horrible dial up speeds so I would have to give it at an actual minute for each page to load. It would load one scanline at a time, and sometimes it would probably take five minutes to load a single picture, sometimes it wouldn't load at all and I'd have to refresh. After my family had gone to bed, I would stay up way into the night reading Naruto like this on the living room desktop. I remember that was when I first read the gaara naruto fight, and I was completely blown away. It was probably the coolest thing I had ever read at that point in my life. Those early days were magical.

If Gaara doesn't get the killing blow within the first minute, he's fucked. His control over earth is both more limited than Toph's AND has the handicap of requiring chakra, a finite resource. Toph can bend virtually indefinitely, and that includes the sand Gaara is attacking her with. However, I'd say adult Gaara versus young Toph is more likely to go in Gaara's favor, but old lady Toph versus adult Gaara? He'd be dead from the other side of the fucking planet the moment he decided to make a move.Or did you all forget that she can seismically map out the entire planet by that age?
