>>116857585The writing would still suck.

>>116857585I like the current style, it's simple but still expresive. The writing is the problem.

The black girl would say EEHHHHHHHHHH a lot.

>>116857618Specifically the dialogue.

>>116857585Unacceptable, Boimler is perfection in his natural form. Your image makes him look like a bland bishie.

>>116857650This. Anime Boims wouldn't even have nipples.

>>116857599FPBP

>>116857585I hope they do an episode like Batman: Gotham Knight where they use multiple art styles.

>>116857585Post more

>>116857585>bwwm coupleThis is it bros. Kino incoming.

gimme anime Tendies

>>116857585Why are black people no longer allowed to be together in the media?

>>116858348Why are you a faggot? I want to see BLACK WOMEN FUCKING WHITE MEN.

>>116858348You just gonna ignore her parents or what?

>>116857628I don't hate the dialogue (aside from Mariner bragging about how many ships or planets she was on and how right she always is), but it's the jokes that fall flat for me.

>>116858348Love how this "criticism" only pops up when it's a white guy/black girl couple.

>>116858392This, bwwm couples are always attacked by Trannies.

>>116858348Jews and white liberals

>>116858366>>116858392>>116858419Race mixing between the African and the European is an abomination.

>>116858392>implying bmwm don't get criticized similarly

>>116858419And bmww couples are always attacked by inbred hicks. Your point?

>>116858348They are, it's white people that aren't>>116858457It's not like the west will survive any more century

>>116857585Wouldn't change the quality whatsover. It's a bad idea of a show to begin with

Attached: mariner.png (378x250, 72.09K)

>>116858592It's the best so far from nu trek.

>>116857599True but it would at least look better.A different style and slower pace will literally make it an average show.

So why was the spider so set on the guy and his uniform? I don't understand what the farmer is telling Mariner over the screams, I know it wants to suckle on him but I don't know why and why him.

>>116858728Shit is shit. There is no variable scale, it's simply shit or not.

>>116858348"Why aren't white people allowed to be together in media?"Both have the same answer, but you've been instructed to call my question racist

>>116858759Because he is white so has good hygiene and flavour.Minorities taste of poop and curry

>>116858770Then I declare... not.

So when is the second episode coming out? >>116858759Nevermind, just realized I can enable subtitles.

>>116857767What was her name?

>>116858991Why does damn near every screencap of these two read like Mariner wanting Boimler to fuck her stupid?

>>116858991Thursday, hopefully a mega soon after.

>>116857599But the first ep was actually not bad, though.

>>116859160Because she probably does. Boimler's already halfway to an anime MC, he's gonna end up captaining a ship crewed by his own harem. And Rutherford.

>>116857585I would want to change dialogue density, motivation, and tone/mood first. Art style is really near the bottom list of concerns. It's a utilitarian style, but Titmouse does an admirable job with it.

>>116859289Yeah the shading and colors were a lot better than the stills led me to believe.

>>116859508What shading? It's flat color you cretin

>>116859173It was very bad.

>>116857585If only he was still a twink

>>116859508It doesn't have shading on the characters, but it does have general lighting and light blooming. If I were to be super lenient, one might argue it's a nod to the completely flat lighting of TNG.

>>116859759The 2nd is the same.More crack head speed dialogue, more frat boy let's get wasted garbage, oh and do you remember that TOS episode with the angry light ball? Wouldn't it be SOOOOOoooo.... funny if it was just an angry man and not dangerous at all? Hahaha KrAzY

>>116859759I wouldn't say very.

>>116859710If you're blind maybe.

>>116860368Extremely?Rather?Definitely?Absolutely?JUST?

>>116860260>Wouldn't it be SOOOOOoooo.... funnyYes.

>>116860431Simply bad, but not horrible.

>>116860420Show me the shading then. In b4 you post 2 tone "only pretending to be retarded xD"

>>116859933>but it does have general lighting and light bloomingAh k that's probably it then. Also blurring for when things are out of focus, etc.

Somebody post the screenshot where it looks like Mariner is sexually assaulting Boimler in the supply closet.

Ironically, Star Trek fans brought this upon themselves because they supported the shit that corrupted television in the first place. If Western people want to rot, it's their choice.

>>116857585Keep your weeb shit out of the cartoons.

>Mariner hates how slow the "bureaucrats" are and thinks she's above regulations and the chain of command>rewatching TNG>Captain Maxwell shows up and has the exact same philosophy - he knows what's REALLY going on and those dumb suits just get in the way, and he's the second best captain in the fleet!>Oh also he's crazy and the thing he goes around the bureaucracy to do is slaughter hundreds of innocent Cardassian scientists and their families

>>116860616GIVE ME THAT FUCKIN' DICK SHYBOY

>>116860260>More crack head speed dialogueI'm starting to suspect this style of writing is the result of a generation of people predominantly communicating through social media, image boards, what have you, rather than having face to face conversations. They end up treating screenwriting as if they were writing on their blog. That entire scene in the car was just Mariner venting. It sounds okay in their heads, but awful in the show.

>>116862883While it would be foolish to disregard social media entirely in the development of modern comedy, I think it's simply because of the writer himself. There are parts of Rick & Morty (which he worked on) and other modern cartoons where characters behave like this. Usually people keep a lid on it, because it communicates a certain type of feeling. People who talk like this are frantic and disregard others. That's why it crops up in Rick & Morty. The show is full of assholes. But you see it in Family Guy when Peter Griffin in acting like an excitable child. This writer was simply never taught what things like tone and comedic timing are. I'm guessing everything he wrote for other shows underwent revision, and that he's never even been in the same room as a director. Oh, and he has a shit sense of humor. People like to point to that TNG Season 8 Twitter account as proof of his fandom and skill, but it's literally nothing but two-sentence stoner takes on TNG A-B plots. One of the entries is "someone pooped on the holodeck".This show is simply not being run with anything even approaching comedic skill.

The Orville would still be better. Simply because it respects Star Trek. Lower Decks has a half way decent premise. A humorous accounting of the lowest ranking crew on a very unimportant ship.

>>116866392This is a SJW show...the green girl will RAPE the implant guy, and somehow is going to be the guy's fault

>>116863352It's the 24th century. Almost every world is a post scarcity utopia, and most cultures have gotten beyond the desires for material wealth.

>>116866243You know face and body proportions differ from person to person, black and white women are proportional diferent.

>>116869552Anon you need to chill.

>>116869598>Almost every world is a post scarcity utopiaIt's only the Federation. That's why latinum has such a high value not only to the Ferengi.

>>116864044Because is PC...you know liberals in California believe everyone is some version of white, not diversity in the human species. No cool checkbones for native americans, No cute nose in white women, No cute small boobs in asian girls, No badass body for blacks...Nope all humankind is white proportions.Fuck this shit, remember the original Star Trek take about human differences?youtube.com/watch?v=2BBOWsWODX4"In my Century we've learned not to fear words""We've each learned to be delighted with what we are"

>>116869727latinum was picked not because of its functional value, but the fact that it cant be replicated. its why gold is so worthless.

>>116869867The point is that it's used as a currency and currency would only be practical as a means of exchange where scarcity still exists.

The show would be decent if Mariner weren't such a complete and utter cunt to Boimler. That's the real R&M influence; turning Boimler into the designated Jerry.

>>116869705He is rigth

>>116869917Except Rick never offered to take Jerry under his wing and Jerry's moments of clarity are usually misplaced. Even when Jerry has a heroic moment, it's usually unintentional. Boimler meanwhile made a conscious decision not to rat out Mariner and this isn't immediately undercut by misfortune as would be the case with Jerry. That said, Mariner either needs to get a lot more clever and funny or a lot more toned down and serious because at the moment she's more like Rick Lite.

The real reason people complain about replicators is because they're usually preset by the manufacturer to produce things that conform to specific health recommendations. So to get a "real" version of something, you have to specify that you want to override those protocols.

You all should be ashamed of yourselves.Beating a dead horse.

The art-style isn't the problem. It sells itself as a comedy and makes safe jokes. It sells itself as a Star Trek nerd piece but it's knowledge is surface level. It doesn't do anything interesting or new and the characters are not particularly interesting. This does not mean it can't do this stuff. It just means that the pilot didn't do it. Give it a few episodes. I'm cautiously optimistic. One problem was Mariner's problem with essential name-dropping while drunk, which wasn't interesting and wasn't funny and took up enough screen time that the writers thought it was both. The biggest problem was it's fear of misdirection - none of the jokes are set-up in a particularly good way and most of them have their punchlines telegraphed. "It'll spoil the milk!" or "She didn't!?!!" There's a slight confusion between response to a joke a success of the joke. Most of this I contribute to the show's reluctance to make jokes that actually satirize the universe the characters are in for the favor of simple character jokes. It was also predictable but that's not necessarily a flaw.

>>116878221Netflix was mad that they paid for Discovery and it was a steaming pile of shit. They lost faith in the brand.

>>116878253>thinking Netflix cares at all about qualityNetflix has no standards, a simple browse through their catalog makes that pretty clear.

>>116878273Netflix cares about whether the things they pay a lot of money for actually draws eyeballs, which is why they cut off Adam Sandler's movie deal and cancelled the international distribution of Lower Decks.Netflix and Amazon both passed because they spent real money on Discovery and Picard, respectively, and got burned badly.

>>116878317That's certainly a possibility but then that's more the fault of Kurtzman for burning bridges than McMahan.

>>116878273Netflix survives on having its IPs valued to cover debts.Trek currently has zero value, the merch isn't selling, the show has no viewers, the bulk of reviews are massively negative even among paid shills. It's fucking dead till CBS end the kurtzman contract, which they cannot afford to do till it comes to term in 2022

>>116878407I don't think anyone blames McMahan, at least not anyone paying attention.R&M was good for a while and the Hulu show was funny enough, this stuff is just a really really bad fit for Trek. The guy clearly loves Trek - plenty do but shouldn't have a show. The real problem is with the executives in charge of the brand. >>116878594>R&M was good for a while and the Hulu show was funny enough, this stuff is just a really really bad fit for Trek.>The guy clearly loves Trek - plenty do but shouldn't have a show.I still think a lot of it has to do with finding the right balance. I'm obviously biased because I didn't hate it. I didn't laugh a lot but I also wasn't offended. I just found it comfy and I appreciated the TNG references. I can see what it's trying to do and I always give shows at least one season before I make up my mind (except for ENT, I gave that 3 seasons and I gave Picard zero because I couldn't get past the first two episodes).>The real problem is with the executives in charge of the brand. They've run it into the dirt almost as quickly as Disney destroyed Star WarsWell yeah. It's kind of hard to do a spoof series when you didn't even get mainline Trek right yet. Instead of being a love letter or a friendly jab, a lot of fans treat it as a spit in the face.

>>116878458No thim but where do people get this from? The show was not only got renewed it got a spinoff and the franchise has more concurrent shows in production right now than it has ever had in its decades long year history. What part of that makes you think the franchise is dead? I want details because it seems like you're just repeating stuff somebody said on youtube bookended with a plea to like and subscribe for more sourceless bs.

>>116878458>bulk of reviews are massively negative even among paid shills63% on RT isn't massively negative. It's not great but it's also not abysmal. Especially since a lot of those reviewers wanted political commentary like they got in STD. And I definitely liked the LD pilot more than STD.

>>116878118While I'm more warm and positive on Lower Decks than most people seem to be, I can't feel bad about the show not being picked up by Netflix/Amazon. The people currently in charge of Star Trek can't keep failing upward, and they need to be confronted with their failure in absolute terms. It may not be fair for Lower Decks to shoulder the brunt of the blowback against Picard, but if CBS can finally admit their new vision isn't working and course correct on the IP, then it's for the greater good.I know CBS thinks they need to attract a fresh young audience, and that alienating old fans is a necessary risk. But they forget that Star Trek was the kind of show parents watched with their kids. How many people tuned in for TNG because they remember watching TOS with their mom and dad?

>>116878830That's basically how I feel about it. As much as I'm willing to give LD a chance, neither CBS nor Kurtzman deserve to profit from it. Ideally everyone pirates it and then tells McMahan what they think of it separate from any feelings about CBS.

What if we'll get a Plinkett of this series? What if the whole Shatner situation will break Mike so much that he'll actually start liking this

Attached: 8to7gib1mnu11.jpg (1280x832, 110.12K)

>>116876438>>116876537It's my understanding that uniform color coding matters the most for quick identification in an emergency situation. So yeah confusing an astronomic navigator with a medic as you're dying is likely to tick you off. But if you're under direct fire that is a moot observation. Assessing who is calling the shots and who is taking the shots and who is -ideally- a noncombatant is probably the most important if you're not briefed on everyone else you run into. But that leads me around that I don't like combining Tactical/Security with Operations. Because that would be very important in the above operational situation. At the very least security need an armband or sash or a pauldron if they must wear yellow.

>>116878720>Instead of being a love letter or a friendly jab, a lot of fans treat it as a spit in the face. This is likely behind 99% of the vitriol for this show and it's a little baffling that executives can still be this bad at reading the audience in the age of instant feedback

>>116879043Assuming they watch more than one episode they won't do a video on it, they don't do animation outside of very rare episodes of Best of the Worst.

>>116879093They also never do an episode by episode breakdown of shows off the air. Or give treatments on their ideas for a tv series. Except for when they do for Star Trek.

>>116879093But it is Star Trek. They're known to touch animation as long as its related to something they know off (like Star Wars)

>>116879093>they don't do animationThis. That said, if anyone can appreciate all the TNG Easter eggs it'll probably be Mike. Though he'll probably never admit it.

>>116878720>I still think a lot of it has to do with finding the right balanceAside from sacking everyone, I think CBS might do well to consider a show that isn't about a captain/crew. They've done this poorly, and the captains deal with big things and their actions have significant ramifications in the Trek universe that the writers don't thoroughly think through. For example, I can imagine a Star Trek lawyer show that exists somewhere between JAG, Perry Mason, and Saul. He'd deal with everything from court martials, peace treaties, or trade disputes, down to getting an ensign out of alien jail because he got into a bar fight on shore leave. He'd not only have a masterful command of federation procedure, but also learn alien law and culture on the fly. The writers get to be creative without the survival of the galaxy at stake, and CBS can find the balance of a novel vision versus fan expectations.Do it, CBS. Take it, it's free.

>>116866032Yeah,i understand your point but the audience of Star Trek is not actually aliens. Your criticism make sense in universe but people IRL would be more sensible to see a black or asian or whatever captain than for example a white skinned Vulcan

So, best case and Worse case scenarios.Best case in my mind is that it ends up achieving the Quality of something like The Orrville, not as good as classic trek, but close enough that it's still lightyears better than STD or Picard.Worse case is that it actually gets worse and starts pushing in the same Hamfisted political hack bullshit that are big reasons STD and Picard are so terrible alongside the writing being ass and the comedy being not funny

>>116880811The worst case scenario would be if the show actually does get good and steers clear of shallow virtue signaling, but never recovers from the backlash to Picard, and CBS believes the critics and takes its failure to mean they should triple down on hamfisted politics in the next ST show.

>>116879063I think differentiating security and medical seems like a good idea. You end up with five colors and tasks: command, fight, fix, heal and fuck around.

>>116879354A Star Trek lawyer show would be a complete shitshow. It would require three times the nuance that the writers already don't have with the ship and crew format.

From WoK through TNG there were 17 ranks, but that's also including 5 enlisted ranks and 4 admiral ranks. DS9 and later actually has the most ranks, with 3 ranks of crewman, 3 of petty officers, 3 of chief petty officer, ensign, lieutenant junior grade, lieutenant, lieutenant commander, commander, captain, commodore, and 4 ranks of admiral.

>>116857585>What if Lower Decks had a different art style? My dream Trek animated show was something that had a more 'realistic' art style like classic, UC Gundam or LoGH but with modern production values and beautiful, detailed backgrounds and animation. Honestly from what I've seen of Lower Decks, it IS actually a pretty good-looking show.

>>116881361It just needs a breather, I think. It needs something low stakes so they can gauge what they should or shouldn't be doing. And I'm not for exact repeats of the old shows, they should still bring in some new ideas and explore uncharted directions.Star Trek is at a point where winning fans back would be a long drawn out process, outside of a movie that blows everyone's minds.

>>116875929Engineering being part of Operations and not Science has always bothered me.

>>116886865I don't think the episode has been aired yet.>>116887075Engineering's actual job is the running and maintenance of the ship's systems. TNG simply lacked a science officer character and split the duties between LaForge, Data, and, on occasion, the Crushers.

>>116876668Sorry not sorry for using first definitions

>>116887075I always took "Engineering" to mean "the people in charge of the engine" sense of the word. Isn't it?

>>116875929I like these uniforms a lot actually. >>116876438I've always felt like one of the two should be green.

>>116885575I get all that, but I don't think burying it in a bureaucracy simulator is the way to go. Star Trek at least somewhat needs to be about exploring weird shit and new unconventional situations, and that means either having a ship actively exploring, or being stationed somewhere on the frontier where weird shit comes to you. A show about lawyers or investigators wouldn't really bring to the table much that a regular show about lawyers or investigators doesn't already have.Plus, a show about the inner workings of the Federation runs into the problem of having to more closely define those inner workings. The Federation is an impossible idealized society, and the shows sidestep that by being a step removed from it. A show that has to examine how the Federation's institutions actually work on a regular basis would be in for a very hard time.

>>116875929>absolutely zero shadingis this the 1960s?

>>116857585There's nothing wrong with Lower Decks except the fandom.

>>116887703I think show that is all about following up on the weird shit and unconventional situations is a perfectly valid approach, especially in light of just how much stuff is relatively undeveloped within the franchise.

>>116888072Because the only other places to discuss Star Trek are the cesspit that is /trek/ or the slow and game-focused /stg/. Also, regardless of opinions on quality or presentation, Lower Decks actually feels like a Star Trek show as opposed to the "legally required to only partially resemble Star Trek" Discovery or Picard, which completely torpedoed the setting so they could make the most basic and surface-tier political commentary (while also ignoring that Picard's commentary would also heavily apply to Discovery).

>>116888826>six Borg cubesSo how fucked are those Romulans? Also, holy fuck, that's a god damned Borg armada, where the fuck is the rest of Starfleet and/or literally the entire Alpha Quadrant?

>>116889297Could be an early transwarp incursion and the Rommies just happened to be there. Hence why the Cerritos is noping out of there.

>>116889297Clearly Section 31 will lure the Borg armada to Romulus, then use an enhanced trilithium device to cause its sun to go supernova, wiping out not only the Borg armada, but also destroying the Romulan Star Empire in one fell swoop.

>>116889452The entire intro isn't really meant to be taken that much seriously. The purpose of that specific part was just to show how cowardly the Cerritos flees after getting one single shot by the cube. Granted, Borg cubes are superdangerous and shouldn't be engaged anyway unless you have an intrepid class explorer ship like the voyager around, but still, that part is to show that these aren't heroic starfleet people who would come to aid other people in need. Or more likely, they would at first, and then skedaddle.

>>116889488stop giving them ideas

>>116889526More pertinently, there are already 11 D'Ds in the battle, which are shown to be able to threaten a Galaxy one-on-one. The Cerritos would be like the Oberths in First Contact, it was nice they showed up, but were they really going to accomplish?

>>116858592I Second the source request.

>>116889673Is it wrong that I want Section 31 to show up in Lower Decks, only for everyone to thing they're some kind of LARPing edgelords and ignore them?

>>116889526>The entire intro isn't really meant to be taken that much seriously. The purpose of that specific part was just to show how cowardly the Cerritos flees after getting one single shot by the cube.Yeah but it makes sense in the universe. You don't stick around and try to take on Borg cubes as a D-list ship with only a fleet of sketchy allies around to help. You get the fuck out of dodge and try to alert the rest of YOUR fleet.

Attached: Starfleet.jpg (630x472, 52.57K)

>>116890418Hell even then your odds are stacked against you. A single Borg cube wiped the floor with the Federation, and they've only gotten wiser to Starfleets tactics since

>>116890691There are more ships in that shot than were present at Wolf 359 or Sector 001, granted the Battle of Sector 001 was the very tail end of the fight against the second cube.

>>116890820Well, to be fair, the shot is a pre-organized war fleet going to face the dominion/cardassian armadaWhen the Borg shows up starfleet has to quickly scramble together just what's in close range, they can't really prepare a big fleet.

Only a few more episodes until episode 2.
