Half Genie Hero had some of the best visuals I've ever seen but I found it incomplete and overly linear. There are six short levels while the other games had dozens. They probably ran out of money after making those gorgeous animations.

Pirate's Curse isn't actually that great of a metroidvania. You've got several small maps instead of one big explorable one, all the major upgrades are in explicit dungeon zones, and there are several times you have to go back to an area you've already been because it's arbitrarily changed for no explicit reason just so you can trigger some event. Pirate's Curse is the better overall game, but even the original game on gbc was a better metroidvania.
I'll give you that m8. There's a lot of pointless backtracking in the game that would have been better served by just transporting the player to the place they need to be to eliminate tedious guesswork.
Even the original Shantae isn't much of a metroidvania. I'd say it's more like a zelda game; you have an overworld which connects dungeons where you go to get upgrades and plot items.
A lot of people seem to have got it into their heads that these games are metroidvanias, but they really aren't.

I've never played Shantae but every time I look up a WayForward game it has fucking good music. I got Risky's Revenge and Pirate's Curse in my backlog and will definitely play them down the line.
You see, though, there isn't much difference between Zelda and Metroid in the first place. The most visible difference is the perspective you play at. Metroidvanias are pretty much exclusively side-scrolling, while Zelda-likes are generally overhead. You can say Zelda-likes have explicit dungeons, but many metroidvanias are set up with one "hub" area and several areas, that might as well be dungeons, branching off. That's almost exactly how the first Metroid is set up.

So I can't help but feel like a lot of this was rushed towards the end. The final level felt really short, last boss was just looked unfinished (that fucking rotating shield with the missing third looked like a pretty bad effect, they should have at least polished the looks of it) I feel like we should have had a final level in the corrupted Genie Realm.
Also Hypno Barons castle was another wasted level, great song but once you got past the teleporting doors it's a fucking cakewalk to get to the damn door, only good part were the damn Mega Man blocks but even those could be easily bypassed with Bat form.
The only area you really needed to explore was the mermaid waterfalls, the location that set the bar really high but none of the following ones matched.

I just beat Half-Genie Hero. 100% completion in like 8.5 hours & I found everything myself so there was plenty of wandering around.
It felt shorter than the other games. There were abilities/transformations that you only really use one time. I think they needed more levels/areas so those additions wouldn't be wasted on a one-off areas like the bat sonar or the spider. Also, maybe they should have saved the Mermaid boss for later since it was quite a spectacle. Seems like something you'd have later in the game.
I never played the Gameboy Shantae to completion, but I played the others & my favorite of them is Pirate's Curse. The pirate gadgets are creative & fun to use; challenging as well. Plus the story elements were cute. Such as interactions with Risky & Rottytops (especially in the Village of Lost Souls). Pirate's Curse is still best Shantae game IMO.
Also when Shantae has her magic inverted & becomes evil I was expecting an internal boss fight between good & bad. I know it's cliche to fight an evil version of yourself, but that was the perfect opportunity to do it & it would have been fun.
That whole part of the story seemed completely pointless. I was expecting something like what you were but nothing really happened. It was just weird.

A shorter linear shantae game could have still worked if they had gotten the pacing right. They're ducktales remake was a pretty good example of that one.
It has sort of the same problems a movie spinoff of a long running series has. They had a higher production budget, but they wanted to do justice to the most popular parts of the series so they didn't take it anywhere new.
The fact that all of Shantae's voiced lines were here saying the names of recurring characters is kind of annoying as well.

It's been a long time since I played MML, but I remember his movement were not the most fluid thing you could think of, and it makes sense because Volnutt used a gun, Shantae must go mostly close quarters. So movement is crucial. Bayonetta was an example because, while she use guns too, it is in a much more acrobatic way. Probably I should have said something like Nightshade or Ninja Gaiden.
Hell, If they decided to go 3D with Shantae, something that might actually happen IMO if Yooka Laylee does well, which games could be used as good examples of how to do action-platform in 3D right?

As much as i hate to say this the game felt lack luster compared to Pirate's Curse, some of the plot like the rival genie being just "a memory" was a wasted effort and felt like it shouldn't have been that way, the backtracking for some transformation abilities felt unnecessary since some like the bat sonar and spider venom are pretty useless and you only use them once, i just hope Risky's Mode isn't just all the previous stages with just Risky slapped on it because i want to see what she's been of to off screen.
I think Wayforward mentioned once that they entertained the idea of a 3rd person perspective game before? The problem was Shantae's hair, in that it obscured absolutely everything else, and you'd basically just be looking at a mass of purple for most of the game.

I think he just means in idle and movement animations. With the camera behind Shantae, you would just see her long, flowing hair most of the time. You'd have to position the camera well overhead to get anything else. You'd have to do something like Mario 3D World, where the camera is in a fixed position that is dependent on where you are in the level. However, if they wanted to do a traditional 3D plaltformer, with wide open stages that are very explorable, that kind of camera doesn't work. You'd have to do something like Other M or Castlevania Lament of Innocence, with largely simple, small corridors and rooms connected together, which may not be what they envision for a 3D Shantae.

nah, it's alright. Certainly not as good as Pirate's Curse, but that's a tough act to follow. You start backtracking pretty early in the game, so don't be surprised. There's a total of 5 levels with one final area which you only play through once.
