Is the user I used to talk about everything from sapphic kino to Nosferatu (original and Herzog remake) and Hammer horror films (The Vampire Lovers and Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell in particular) still around?

present

How wonderful!
I’ve just started going through the Hammer horror films, including ‘The Karnstein Trilogy’, which got me thinking of these threads. I had already seen ‘The Vampire Lovers’ from 1970 with Peter Cushing, Ingrid Pitt & Madeline Smith, and we talked about it in one of the previous threads last year.
I finally got around to seeing ‘Lust for a Vampire’ from 1971 yesterday – no major Hammer stars in this, but Yutte Stensgaard, Suzannah Leigh, Barbara Jefford, & Ralph Bates, as well as the guy who played the footman/servant in ‘The Vampire Lovers’, who shows up as a policeman to investigate the disappearance of one of the girls at the upper-class, all-girls school shortly after Mircalla arrives.

The script was written by the same screenwriter as the previous film, but there isn’t any continuity to speak of, and it is a weaker film than ‘The Vampire Lovers’. Peter Cushing was cast, but had to decline the role when his wife became ill – it was also supposed to be directed by Hammer regular Terence Fisher, but due to an ‘accident’ (ie him getting drunk and playing ‘chicken’, which involved him trying to cross a busy road according to Suzannah Leigh on the audio commentary track). Another Hammer regular, Jimmy Sangster took the directing job on very short notice, with all but one role already cast. Listening to the audio commentary track you quickly get the feeling that he doesn’t like the film, and that it was almost(?) forced on him.

Still, for all its flaws it is a fun film, with a very comfy setting, and with a better script that focused more on Carmilla, and stuck to the sapphic theme more, it could’ve been a worthy follow-up to ‘The Vampire Lovers’.

Watched any sapphic kinos lately?

Welcome back. I'm watching Countess Dracula at the moment with Ingrid Pitt. She is so damned attractive in The Vampire Lovers, I was happy to see that she headlines Countess too.

Yeah, I felt that Lust for a Vampire was a step down from The Vampire Lovers as well but had some comfy scenes. Twins of Evil (see webms earlier in the thread), although part of the Karnstein Trilogy, really has nothing at all to do with the novella, and is less captivating than the other two imo. Fantastic soundtrack though. Also the footman/policeman pops up again in Twins of Evil as a second in command to Cushing.

You have so much info on Hammer. I would love to own an entire set of Hammer (with extras etc.) and just make my way through them.

Not that I can think of. Keep meaning to watch the Carmilla movie but haven't got around to it yet. And I saw the trailer for Disobedience the other day and although Rachel Weisz just pisses me off these days I don't think I can pass up her and Mcadams together. How about you? I did notice there seem to be a lot of them popping up lately.

...

I’m DL-ing ‘Countess Dracula’, but no seeders at the moment – ‘Twins of Evil’ is stuck at 71 percent. I’m going in blind on these, though I suspect they won’t be able to top ‘The Vampire Lovers’. I think a continuation of the original novel, following a reincarnated Carmilla each time would have been interesting – if they stayed more faithful to the character and the theme of it.

I’ve just started watching the Hammer classics actually; (Horror of) Dracula, The Curse of Frankenstein, The Revenge of Frankenstein, & as mentioned in one earlier thread I started in the wrong end of the Frankenstein series and watched ‘Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell’ first. The new releases with audio commentaries are great – they provide a lot of insight on the actors, the production and everything between.

So he is the only actor to appear in all three films then? I would have liked to see Valerie Gaunt appear in more Hammer films – she played Frankenstein’s maid in ‘The Curse of Frankenstein’, and Dracula’s (only) bride in ‘(Horror of) Dracula’, making her Hammer’s first female vampire. Those are apparently her only film credits, which is a real shame – she had a nice screen presence and those piercing blue eyes could have hypnotised me quite easily.

It is a real shame the rights to the various Hammer films are owned by different companies, making a complete box set nigh impossible. A box set of the restored & uncut Blu-ray releases of the complete Dracula, Frankenstein and Mummy films (and one for the Karnstein Trilogy?) would have been fantastic.

Someone on the Classic Horror Film Board alerted me to this book - The Peter Cushing Scrapbook: web.archive.org/web/20170117175445/http://peverilpublishing.co.uk/the-peter-cushing-scrapbook/
Looks like a must buy for me - watercolour paintings, sketches, costume designes, doodles, letters, &c., all from Cushing’s hand!

I did finally get around to watching ‘The Neon Demon’ not too long ago, and that definitely qualifies as sapphic kino, and I am finishing The Karnstein Trilogy’. If the tags on IMDb are correct ‘Countess Dracula’ doesn’t feature anything sapphic at all.

How so? Last I heard she was doing a film about the David Irving trial, but that was back in 2016/7 I think.

Also, is it just me and my yuri-goggles being to tight, or was there the hint of Anna and Aleera in ‘Van Helsing’ having some past history/past life together?

The Vampire Lovers is definitely the most faithful to the source material.
I think so, from memory.
Maybe some kind user who has everything might make a hardrive full of them available. I remember on I think it was google market place or something where you could pay with a google wallet or something you could find all sorts of compilations people had put together and would send you an external hardrive (soap operas, series, hard to find movies etc.) Can't for the life of me remember what the market place was called. I found someone selling this Japanese version of peterpan I watched as a kid on there that I could find absolutely nowhere else. Boy did that make me smile.

That Cushing book looks great. Saved to favourites for whenever I actually have money to spend. Yes Countess Dracula has no sapphic content at all. Neither does Twins of Evil, which really separates it from the other two. Let's just say Rachel Weisz' film choices haven't been appealing to me lately.

I never did see Van Helsing. Worth watching?

btw if you know of an user site I can upload to I can make them available to you

I found the site archive.is/I79rY at least, I think that's the one.

The official Hammer site offers a few stand-alone titles of interest, and a box set with twenty films – mostly rubbish titles, since they don’t own the rights to most of the classics.
I’d love to get my hands on the VHS-relseases you see in James Rolfe’s videos on Hammer. Only the recent releases are uncut though – I suspect the older ones are pretty castrated by the censorship.
Speaking of Japan… I think some of the new restored & uncut Blu-ray releases came from Japanese prints. I guess only Japan had the balls to show the films uncut back in the day.

I’ll order my copy of the Cushing book once the publisher website will finally load again. I was afraid it would have a very limited printing and be sold out long ago.
Too bad about ‘Countess Dracula’ & ‘Twins of Evil’ – you’d think they’d actually play up the sapphic themes in the 1970s, not do the opposite, and in the process ruin the character of Carmilla, turning her into a bland female vampire you could get in any other film.
I had a quick look at Wikipedia, and I noticed Weiss is starring in the sapphic film ‘Disobedience’, where she plays a rabbi’s lesbian daughter. Judging by the plot of the book it is Jewish as fuck.

If you are in the mood for an action adventure spectacle in the same vein as Sommer’s two Mummy-films starring Brendan Fraser & Rachel Weiss, and actors chewing the scenery like nothing you’ve seen before, then yes. It really has nothing to do with the Universal monster films at all, and the Van Helsing character has been turned into a swashbuckling action hero fighting monsters for a secret religious order – also there is some steampunk-esque weaponry thrown in there. There is an over-abundance of CGI, hammy acting, and the story is completely ridiculous.

If you are looking for something more like a modern take on a Hammer horror film, you are probably better off (re-)watching Burton’s ‘Sleepy Hollow’. If you do decide to give it a watch, be on the lookout for anything between Anna (Kate Beckinsale) & Aleera (Elena Anaya), Dracula’s redheaded bride.

I found a new torrent of it, Twins.of.Evil.1971.DVDRip.x264-HANDJOB – got some really nice DL speed with it.

Sorry for the wall of green text. Was having trouble posting.

what song? sounds really familiar.

Found it.

I noted a possible reference to Elizabeth Báthory in Nicolas Winding Refn’s ‘The Neon Demon’ over at /bestemma/. I think Elizabeth exclusively went after women for her victims, so maybe she was an inspiration for J. Sheridan Le Fanu when he wrote ‘Carmilla’?

Seconding that. It looked like he was just going through the motions in Burton’s ‘Dark Shadows’, and his cameo in (the atrocious) ‘Tusk’ was not only pointless but equally dreadful as well. Don’t get me started on the Pirates films…

While there certainly is some dark humour in the Hammer films, the ‘humour’ in ‘Sleepy Hollow’ is distracting and takes away from what could have been a really fantastic atmospheric Gothic horror film. Depp’s character is just too far removed from the grim horror atmosphere at times for it to be successful.

Sleepy Hollow | Pseudo-Intellectual Reviews: archive.is/5QFpb

About the church scene in SH… It struck me that when Ichabod realises that the Horseman can’t enter the church it might have something to do with Katrina’s protective magic. She hastily draws a pentagram on the floor with pink chalk – the same symbol she drew in Ichabod’s room earlier to protect him from the Horseman.

Also, I found out they shot a very interesting part for the masquerade ball scene in ‘Van Helsing’ with Aleera & Anna dancing, and the vampiress licking Anna’s neck – for some reason (too lewd?) it was cut from the film, and I think the only evidence left of it is this still that appears in the special features on the DVD of the animated prequel/tie-fin film ‘Van Helsing: The London Assignment’. The cut part is present in the script, where Aleera whisks Anna away from Dracula to dance with her herself, and says “My turn”, and leaves Dracula to find some random woman to dance with. There is also a joke that “they’re both trying to lead” as they dance together.

I was surprised to learn that Roger Ebert gave it a positive, three-star review, ending with:

Fuck, that's hot. "Van Helsing" really was a lot of fun. I passed on it when it came out because the trailers totally misrepresented it as a self-serious action-horror that looked ridiculous. I knew that actor reminded me of someone.
I watched ‘Twins of Evil’ yesterday, and if not for Peter Cushing, it would have been truly forgettable. Carmilla’s character appears to have been an afterthought, no doubt they were hoping to cash in on connecting it to the two previous Carmilla films. IMHO it should be called ‘The Karnstein Duology’.

Cushing delivers as always though, so if you are a fan of him, it is worth a watch. Also, the interior of Karnstein Castle looks amazing in this one.

Seconded. The black & white opening scene was great – special effects look better in b&w I think, and the actor who played Dr. Frankenstein was great, same with the cinematography and the set design – top notch stuff. They paid a lot of homage to the classic Universal monster films – the burning windmill, the monster surviving the fall and hiding below the ruins, the look of the laboratory, &c.

The masquerade ball was another highlight – the costumes and the performance artists looked really good. The massive set they built for the Transylvanian village was great too. Some of the CGI hasn’t aged too well (the werewolves in particular), but the brides still look decent.

Ach du Scheiße! The video quality was worse than I thought…

Sure there are - though most of them are not good or even watchable. ‘Near Dark’ & ‘The Lost Boys’ are probably the best ones. Not sure which one I like the most… Both are great, with fantastic soundtracks. TLB is much more humorous, basically a horror/comedy, while ND is much more serious – though, of course, Bill Paxton’s performance/character is completely crazy and probably the best character of the film.

OH SHI–
Well, it’s all out in the open now, for better or worse.

Yeah, especially the fight in the windmill…
The scene where he has to burn the bitemark was brutal – same with the Baroness accepting her fate .
I think Jimmy Sangster should have written the screenplay alone – he did a fantastic job with the screenplay for ‘(Horror of) Dracula’, treating vampirism almost scientifically and removing the sillier things like turning into bats, wolves and fog. If they had ditched the idea that vampires can turn into bats, which they couldn’t according to the first Hammer ‘Dracula’, and maybe a different actor as the Baron, it would have been pretty damn flawless. I think this might be one of Hammer’s best horror films.
I liked the nod to M. R. James’ ‘Count Magnus’, with the padlocks falling off the coffin, and the antics of the second doctor, who played the undertaker in ‘(Horror of) Dracula’.
Also, I noticed that Van Helsing’s travel bag (the one containing his stakes and hammer?), bears the initials J.V.H. in gold; Van Helsing in Stoker’s ‘Dracula’ was named Abraham (after the author).

The Uninvited was a charming watch.

Attached: The Uninvited (1944) - Not the least rattled.webm (720x524, 4.6M)

What game is that?

I’ve never actually finished Coppola’s ’Dracula’. I’ve seen bits and pieces of it on TV, and I did decide to give it a watch a while back, but I had to stop at the (were)wolf sex scene – it really took me out of the film, and it felt completely out of place. I might give it another try – and actually finish the damn thing – soon, after I have completed my Hammer marathon.

I recently finished ‘The Mummy’ and ‘Frankenstein Created Woman’. Not terribly impressed by them, despite the performances given by Cushing 8in both) & Lee. One highlight though, was seeing Derek Fowlds in ‘Frankenstein Created Woman’! I saw his name in the beginning credits, and I had to take a double take. He is, perhaps, best known for his role as the dour, yet loveable police chief (and later pub owner) Oscar Blaketon on the long-running cop/drama ‘Heartbeat’ (1992-2010). Also, the actor who played Ludwig (Renfield) in ‘Darcula: Prince of Darkness’ played Dr. Frankenstein’s colleague and partner in crime.

On the second audio commentary track of Roger Corman’s ‘Pit and the Pendulum’, Tim Lucas mentioned ‘The Uninvited’ as being one of the first, if not the first, film to feature a ghost playing the piano. I watched ‘The Uninvited’ a while back, and I was pleasantly surprised by it – nice eerie atmosphere, perhaps helped by being shot in black and white.

If you haven’t already seen it, you should definitely check out Jack Clayton’s ‘The Innocents’ from 1961 – also shot in black & white, it takes place at a Gothic manor house in the English countryside in the Victorian Era. Beautifully shot, suspenseful, very atmospheric and genuinely eerie.
You can see some stills, and a (sadly a bit too small) collage here: cinemosaic.blogspot.no/2011/10/innocents-1961.html

I haven’t seen it yet, but ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’ looks promising - despite the lack of any sapphic vampiresses. It stars Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston & John Hurt.

Yeah it is out of place, completely unnecessary. I imagine it was purely for titilation purposes (future furries count their lucky stars).

I have a feeling that I watched The Innocents some time ago but can't really remember it so will have to check it out again. I always get it mixed up with Eye of the Devil, also starring Kerr.

I found it pretentious. But I think I get that feeling watching any Jarmusch. Most people seem to love it but I just found it hollow.

Just watched an odd one starring David Niven. Kind of all over the place. I kept laughing though because the protag. reminded me too much of Garth Marenghi.

Oh god, the first one is great.
More nignogs getting beaten?

Although the acting is atrocious, and the movie isn't that great, it's worth watching for the costumes, sets, and music alone. Those elements turn it into a movie that can be watched multiple times. I still quite like it's adaptation/interpretation from the source.

If they were hoping to titillate the audience, I can’t understand what compelled them to go with a cheesy, out-of-place werewolf/human sex-scene over a (sapphic) seduction scene, maybe with some bloodplay to spice things up.

Hammer’s Dracula adaptation certainly upped the sexual nature of vampires, with the director saying that Dracula’s victim’s becoming hypnotised into thinking the bite was a pleasant sexual experience. The Karnstein Trilogy in particular were early depictions of the seductive qualities of the vampiress.

If it is half as good as ‘The Innocents’ it should be worth checking out.

The poster gave me an artsy impression for sure, which could be either good or bad…

It is all too rare to see a comedy that uses the Gothic aesthetic, only Mel Brooks’ ‘Young Frankenstein’ & ‘Dracula: Dead & Loving It’ comes to mind. Looks like a fun mix of vampire horror and comedy blaxploitation?

That certainly looks interesting, and the guy who plays Garth looks familiar…
Reminds me of ‘Helen Keller vs. Nightwolves’, and I’d very much like to read one of Garth’s books tbh.

Also, I don’t think we’ve mentioned one of the most obvious recent sapphic-themed vampire comedies: ‘Lesbian Vampire Killers’. Seen it? I got it on DVD years back when it came out, but I found the humour to be a complete miss, especially when the protagonist acquires a penis shaped sword to use against the lesbian vampiresses, who are turning others into lesbian vampiresses as well. That was when I turned it off. Haven’t tried to watch it again – I even gave away the DVD (along with ‘A Serious Man’).

I’m a sucker for that Gothic aesthetic – everything from the Regency era to the late Victorian Era/Edwardian Era. I’ll happily take an old Gothic horror film shot on stage/sets with beautiful matte paintings, and costumes (coats, (top)hats, gloves, dresses, corsets, &c.) over the trite, jumpscare riddled schlock of the current year.

When I was making the cut of Mina and Dracula in the theatre, there's a fairly long scene with them both petting the escaped wolf. I had never really thought deeply about it before but perhaps Coppola is a secret furry.

Saw it. Hated it. Don't usually mind Frost/Pegg type comedy but there is something really off with that movie.

I think it tried to be but it seemed to mash genres together so never settles into a mood. The main actress is stunning but that's about all it had going for it imo. Maybe I need to watch it in a more light hearted mood to appreciate it.

That would be hilarious.

Wow, that's redpilled as fuck

Tarantino is a confirmed footfag, so Coppola being a furry wouldn’t be too far-fetched. Pretty sure a lot of these Hollywood directors are into some freaky shit.

Hear, hear! I’m not the biggest fan of the Frost/Pegg films (I only ever watched the two first ones), but at least they had their moments; LVK was just a complete travesty – not only did it try way too hard to be funny, the characters were unlikeable, and worst of all, it came off like it was made by a bunch of horny teenagers. Such a wasted potential…

I could not stop cringing during his scenes. The worst.

Got around to watching Van Helsing. David Wenham seemed out of place (I just kept thinking of him as Faramir in LOTR). I imagine anything between Anna and Aleera was a nod to the ubiquitous shapphic vampire theme. Though the desire quote could also be because Anna is related to Dracula right? They were descendants of his father or something. I don't know. I was surprised when she died. I guess they were hoping on potentially turning it into a series of movies.

I never found robot chicken funny. It tries way too hard to be shocking and offensive, forgetting to make an actual joke in the process.

Reincarnation (or past lives) was also a theme in Sommers’ earlier films, ‘The Mummy’ & ‘The Mummy Returns’ as well, but it was done really half-assed in ‘Van Helsing’, and it was never explored or explained enough.

Van Helsing says to Carl that he remembers events from the past, at least he does so in the script – I don’t remember if he does it in the film as well. In the film though, Dracula makes it clear that they have fought before, and that Van Helsing cut off one of his fingers in the battle some four-hundred years earlier. That is why I found the scene where Anna asks Aleera if she did something to wrong her in a past life a bit interesting. Aleera really seems to have it in for Anna, much more so than the two other brides, so it’s too far-fetched that Aleera had her heart broken by Anna in a past life, right? Maybe it is explored/developed more in the novelization?

On the audio commentary track Sommers’ said that he originally wanted Wenham to get the full monk haircut. Wenham and Hugh are also pretty close in height, so Wenham had to walk with a slight hunch to appear shorter. I do agree that he was miscast in the film – in both ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘300’ he played good-looking heroic men of action. Someone like Steve Coogan would probably have been a better choice for the role of Carl. And I agree with you that they probably were planning on turning it into a series, and given the film’s popularity it is strange that they didn’t – maybe they couldn’t get all the actors to return? The film received mostly negative reviews, but it was very profitable, especially on home video.

Speaking of a Van Helsing series though, I found this fake trailer for a 1970s TV show made by Ed Glaser, using clips from ‘Dracula A.D. 1972’ & ‘The Satanic Rites of Dracula’. Defientely looks like something I’d watch, especially if it starred Cushing & Lee.
web.archive.org/web/20171005152451/http://www.comingsoon.net/horror/news/780095-peter-cushing-and-christopher-lee-star-in-the-van-helsing-mysteries

I finished ‘Old Dracula’ earlier today, and while not a great film it was actually pretty decent, and some of the humour was kinda good – especially the dialogue and chemistry between the Count and his servant. When they were resurrecting Dracula’s bride with a blood ritual and wondered if she had ‘gone off’ since came back black, and when he complimented the woman’s neck, and was told it was a rather odd compliment to give – small stuff like that was very amusing. The count and his servant reminded me quite a lot of ‘Count Duckula’, with the count and his servant, Igor. I wouldn’t be surprised if Cosgrove Hall took some inspiration from ‘Old Dracula’ for their cartoon. Also, I don’t think they could have gotten away with the blackface at the end today – it was great, though it would have been even better if they had gone all in with it.

Also, I finally got around to see ‘Countess Dracula’ as well. A very good film, with some good performances and interesting characters. I was kinda surprised by the great, yet very bleak downer ending – I didn’t expect them to off Toth like that, though I guess his last name was a clue… Ingrid Pitt and Nigel Green, who played Captain Dobi, were very good, the castle historian, Fabio, was also an interesting and amusing character. I listened to a radio documentary on Hammer’s horror films yesterday (hooktube.com/watch?v=29pBYAA1hpE), and Ingrid Pitt said she never forgave the director (or whomever was in charge) for her voice being dubbed by another, uncredited actress. I definitely think she was right in her criticism, and that her voice would have added to the performance. She seemed to have given it her all and her voice is a big part of the overall performance that you can’t recreate or achieve in a dubbing studio later on. A real shame we’ll probably never get to hear Pitt’s own voice in the film tbh.

You both talk like faggots, that's for sure.

...

Yeah I never understood what that was about. Was he supposed to be an angel or something (Gabriel)?

That would have been a fun series.

Have you seen Deadlier than the Male? He's great in that. I would like to check out more films with him. Elke Sommers is also great in it. Fun film.

I'm am so dense. I was wondering why her voice seemed so different, accent and all, in Countess Dracula when it was so sexy in The Vampire Lovers. Definitely a shame. I don't understand why they would dub her in the first place. Will check out that radio doco. Yes, the movie was quite depressing in the end. No happily ever after for any of them.

Lol the ending in Old Dracula but

Hey, check this out , you might like it.
(I'm not the user who you were talking to, I'm the /bestemma/ BO).

Neat. I tried to watch February a while back and ended up forwarding through most of it. I should give it another try I guess. The music definitely helps the scene you cut. Also, although I don't keep up with the best emma shenannigans, I checked out your board and couldn't stop laughing at pics related.

It's not the best movie she's been in, I'll give you that. I enjoyed it though.
t-thanks
lol, that was the point
it was originally an anonymous post and it said "Best Emma", so I thought I'd take the opportunity to subvert it in a funny way.

Also you're welcome to join the conversation on the board, although we absolutely love Emma she's sort of a patroness to us, not the exclusive focus of our conversations. I assume you're the user my BV told me about, who uploads Webms from horror movies and similar stuff. If it's stylish and bloody, chances are we'll like it.

By the way, I'm about to watch Beyond the Black Rainbow at the urge of my BV, I just downloaded it. I'll post a review after I'm done watching it.

Thanks for the welcome. Ah then Scream 4 was a serendipitous choice to upload.

I really liked this one. Excuse my ignorance, but what is BV? Yes, I upload webms from horror films and others.

It's fantastic because we didn't have a lot of material from it on the board yet.
Another endorsement, I'm really hyped lol.
Board volunteer. I had posted the trailer but he watched the film first and his review of it was really encouraging.
Are you the same user who uploaded the Gentlemen Prefer Blondes webms or is that another one?

Ah I see now thanks.

The very same.

Wow, that was a shot in the dark. I'm the user who said I had to turn down the volume watching the laryngitis scene to avoid making my neighbors think I was watching porn lol.

Because of technical issues I'll sadly have to postpone watching Beyond the Black Rainbow, but I watched the first 8 minutes to get a taste of it and it's impressive.
I love that it's done in a way that perfectly captures the 70s/80s feel and that it's very surrealistic with a dreamy atmosphere. The colors, the lighting, the furnishing, the mise en scène are fantastic. For me there's no doubt, Italians are the masters of this art.

Huge John Carpenter vibes too, forgot to say.
This promises to be an unforgettable experience.

I was going to post that because the scene cracks me up but opted for a short webm. I remember you lol.

I just skimmed through a million emma war threads missing 90% of the pictures and now my head is full of fuck.

It certainly seems like that was what they were trying allude to, though they also supposedly changed the first name so they could trademark it, since the original character is in the public domain.

VH mentions that he remembers fighting the Romans in the Siege of Masada (in the script at least), this siege ended in all the Jews committing mass suicide to avoid capture. This would imply that Van Helsing was a Jew in the past and that he too had committed suicide, one of the biggest no-nos in the Abrahamic faiths – so he was cursed/punished by God for his suicide and sent back to fight vampires/evil/monsters?

I have not. I don’t think I have seen him in anything other than ‘Countess Dracula’, but I’d certainly be interested to see what else he’s been in. He had a really great screen presence, and he looked quite imposing in that uniform and that massive hat.

Don’t feel too bad about it – if I hadn’t heard the documentary first, I probably wouldn’t have put two and two together either. It’s been a while since I saw her in ‘The Vampire Lovers’, so I didn’t remember what her voice sounded like. I think Hammer did dubbing on several films…
I remember mentioning that Roland Topor & Isabelle Adjani were dubbed over in Herzog’s ‘Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht’, because their German wasn’t the best, and in Corman’s ‘Pit and the Pendulum’ Barbara Steele was dubbed too – no idea what compelled them to dub her though, since she was English… I’d always prefer to hear the original voices, even if the actor/actress speaks with an accent, IMHO it just adds to the character/portrayal.

Yeah, that made no sense – unless they implied that you can be infected by blackness from a bite. They could easily have avoided that goof by having Mark/Angela stake/wound Dracula, so that his servant would have to steal some blood for a transfusion at the bloodbank, and it turned out the blood came from someone who was black.

I see you two have met - fingers crossed this turns out OK.

Oh lawd! I feel like my reputation is on the line here.
The flashback scene to 1966 with the drug trip/interdimensional travel scene reminded me of a nightmare I had not too long ago. It was probably the eeriest part of the film IMHO. I can’t even begin to imagine what it would have been like to see this film high.

Oh shit… Well, in our defence a lot of them got hijacked by trolls who interrupted our discussion.

I don't remember if I posted it, but Best Emma had two "adult behaving little girl" roles early on her career.

To be fair, it's not like they're obligatory reads, they matter mostly if you want to get the memes and shenanigans going on. I'll look at which ones are focused on reviewing stuff and report back so that you don't have to wade through superfluous material.

I'm sure it will, the man has proven taste.
I'm finally going to watch it now.
Last night I had some problems:
Not very related to that, but I marathoned the first episodes of Wonder Woman with fever, slightly delirious when I was 15, shit was cash. Turned a nasty flu into something enjoyable. Lynda Carter was absolutely lovely as Diana Prince and I think it helped that she was taking care of an ill Colonel Trevor in them. Her voice was alluring too.

It certainly seems like there is a pattern here. Depending on what would happen if they were captured alive, they may have taken the only/best way out.

I can see why you would have to postpone watching it; it is a film where you'd want to be fully devoted to what is presented on screen, with no distractions.

Is it worth looking into, or do you need to have your nostalgia goggles on in order to be able to enjoy it now? I've never seen the show myself, so my goggles are sadly non-existant in this case.

Attached: I'm Alan Partridge S02E03 – Sex people.webm (640x368, 13.19M)

I have to say something though, despite being fully focused today, maybe last night the experience would have felt more intimate because I was already a bit sleepy. For example the synths in the soundtrack felt more pulsating than they did today.
It's campy to the point of being endearing, very cartoonish and undeniably a product of its time, but for me it was worth it. Much like Batman (the '66 series), the primary audience is kids but it has its easter eggs for the grownups too. Some of the people involved in Batman were in Wonder Woman too.
And yes, Wonder Woman is a Mary Sue and you could accuse the series of promoting female supremacy, but then again the character was created by a kinky fetishist living in a menage à trois. And the villains are nazis and they're cartoonish as fuck (which is why it doesn't work as propaganda and so doesn't alienate me).
Probably a good indicator of whether you'll enjoy it or not is whether or not you enjoyed Knight Rider. If you can enjoy one, you can enjoy the other.
And if you enjoy the Marilyn Monroe webms that get posted here, you'll likely enjoy WW too because she's very seductive in the same way (while staying chaste, albeit tempted by Colonel Trevor). It's platonic kino.

I just remembered that there's an episode where Wonder Woman infiltrates a cultish new age facility involving hypnosis, mind control and other seedy stuff. So it even touched some of the same themes as Beyond the Black Rainbow (at a much more superficial and light-hearted level though, and without mentions of drugs that I can remember). Back in the day those fads were a relatively common occurrence.

So does my all time favourite film actually. John Milius mentions on the audio commentary track that the snake cult/Children of Doom in the film was based on The Peoples Temple Agricultural Project aka Jonestown, who, in 1978, committed mass suicide – 918 died from cyanide poisoning.

Also, I read somewhere online that Panos based some ideas of ‘Beyond the Black Rainbow’ on the writings of Valdamar Valerian – new age stuff with UFOs, &c.

Attached: Conan the Barbarian - Battle of the Mounds conversation.webm (640x272, 5.44M)

Ayyyy, I was going to mention Jonestown in my post.

Anyone else here fancy Manowar?
Video is fan-made trash but the song is what matters.

Fargo S2 deals with kooky new-age cults too, Kirsten Dunst's character is brainwashed to the point of insanity and obsessed with "self-actualization" as promoted by a guru.

Absolutely. I'm listening to the radio doco now. It's such a shame that much of the effort she put into the character was stripped with the dubbing. I wonder if there's an original without the dubbing sitting in a film can in someone's attic.

We can only hope. If the audio quality of the original recording is good enough they could remaster it for a new Blu-Ray release. I imagine it would be a somewhat costly endeavour to remaster the old audio and score though. They did a fantastic job restoring the deleted scenes and audio for ‘Dracula’ & ‘The Curse of Frankenstein’, but ‘Countess Dracula’ sadly doesn’t have the same classic status as those films, although I would say it is one of the better Hammer films I have seen. They found the cut scenes from ‘Dracula’ (some scenes of the stakings and the gruesome scene of Dracula’s demise) in Japan, so there might be hope of a restored version of ‘Countess Dracula’ too. Though, it is a bit too late now, since sadly Ingrid Pitt died in 2010.

Also, Hammer dun did it again: they dubbed Yutte Stensgaard in ‘Lust For a Vampire’ too! I remember it was mentioned on the audio commentary track, and the reason given was that Yutte’s English wasn’t good enough, so her voice was dubbed by an uncredited actress (Valentine Dyall according to Wikipedia). For the close-up of Count Karnstein, played by Mike Raven in the film, they used a close-up of Christopher Lee’s eyes from one of the other Dracula films – Mike didn’t find out till the premiere, and was so angry that he walked out when he saw it. According to Wikipedia Ingrid Pitt was offered to reprise the role of Carmilla again, but she turned it down – no price for guessing why…

I’ve been looking for a scan of this book by Hammer historian Marcus Hearn – he appears on several of the audio commentary tracks for Hammer’s Blu-Ray & DVD releases. It looks worth checking out.

Also, I just finished the second season of Carmilla – yes, long overdue I know. Danny is still best girl, and you just want to shake Laura some times, since she is too blind to see that Danny is right there, standing up for her and doing everything she can to help while she pines after a certain useless bloodsucker. Perry grew a lot on me this season, probably the second best character after Danny.

Yes, for sure would be a good one to check out.

I was over Danny by the end of the second season and was pretty much invested in Carmilla/Laura by season 3. Much preferred Perry and LaFontaine in seasons three as well because they were mostly separated and not yapping at each other. Have you started season 3? I was fairly happy with the direction it took, although the last episode has a rather absurdly long death scene (to the point that I wasn't sure if it was on purpose and supposed to be funny or not). Finally ponied up some dosh to download the movie from the site. Probably going to watch it tonight.

I’m still on episode four of season three. I found a torrent with season 0(‽), 1 & 2 all collected and with what I guess are the official subtitles. The subs are actually very amusing and bring a whole lot of added humour to the show that you’ll miss otherwise – a lot of snarky meta humour that fits the show – definitely worth checking out: btdb.to/torrent/bxvrjr30BEfBJlp30505HWQK53qbXvu1Q4.html

I’ve heard some rumours they fuck over Danny in season three, but so far I’m still on her side. I think they goofed when they decided to break up Carm & Laura for the sake of drama so early in the second season. The guy who played Will was good too, and I wish Perry had managed to kill Mattie with holy water…

On a somewhat related note: have you seen the 1991 version of ‘Dark Shadows’ aka ‘Dark Shadows: The Revivial’? I was rewatching the first episode yesterday, and the show looks great! Also, Barbara Steele and a young Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in it! The show only lasted for one season and they only made twelve episodes, but if it holds up it’s gonna be an interesting show. Fingers crossed they’ll decide to introduce some sapphic bloodsuckers too.

the Carmilla source novella which is neat. Pretty much everyone comes back, even Danny for about 30 seconds. It was nice having something other than the vlog format. Fun movie.

Only thirty seconds of Danny? But that’s not nearly enough ;_; At least I have the last episodes of season three to look forward to, as well as whatever ‘season 0’ is. Danny might be an evil bloodsucking fiend now (at the point in season three where I am at), but she’s still best girl dammit!

I have already downloaded the film, I’ve just gotta finish season three first…

I tried getting into the original a year or so ago, but it just felt like they were stretching out the story to cover more episodes. I don’t mind a slow burn film/TV show, quite the contrary, but this time it just felt like they didn’t have enough story there to begin with. The Burton/Depp film was truly bad – a real shame since the cast was good and along with Burton’s love for the Gothic aesthetic, it should have been a much better film. I guess it is hard to cram so much plot into one single film though, since the show ran for so many episodes with Barnabas as a main character. Depp’s performance was worthy of a Razzie – just a weird mix of dark humour (that often failed) and odd mannerisms…

The first episode of the Revival series moves along at a rather brisk pace though, it doesn’t waste much time in introducing us to the characters and then throwing Barnabas into the mix. Also, the amount of qts on this show is very high!

My only gripe with it so far, and this goes for a lot of bloodsucker films/shows, is that they just go around and bite people pretty much in the open, and then leave the body to be easily found! It’s like he is actively trying to sabotage himself. Stop betraying the masquerade and act so damn suspicious. It’s a wonder his cover wasn’t blown in the first episode tbh.

What is this season 0? Is it on YT? Oh I just remembered the torrent. Will check it out. Yeah, the movie is pretty much focused on Carmilla, Laura, and Carmilla's first love. The others have minor supporting roles. I think Kersh gets maybe a few lines, but at least he doesn't get shit on as much as in the series.
He's like that in everything since the turn of the century imo.
I know right? I always notice that in shows and movies and wonder what they hell they do with all the bodies. At least in The Hunger you understand how they pick them up and dispose of them.

I think season 0 is set between seasons 1 & 2, though it is weird they didn’t call it ‘season 1,5’ if that is the case… There are only twelve episodes in season 0, and it should be up on YT as well.
Also, the last episode of season 2 in the torrent collection I mentioned is bugged – the video ends, but the audio continues for the last minutes, so I had to go to YT to see the end of it.

Yeah, a real shame he went off the deep end tbh. As for Burton though, I really liked his stop motion animation films ‘Corpse Bride’ (2005) (which, to be fair, he co-directed) & ‘Frankenweenie’ (2012). Maybe I’ve got a bias because I love stop motion films, but I thought those were very good. And Burton showed his love for Hammer horror in ‘Frankenweenie’ as well, when the parents watch ‘Dracula’ from 1958 on the TV, and we see Burton-regular Christopher Lee as the Count.

In the original ‘30 Days of Night’ comic they addressed the fact of the entire population being killed off as a pack of bloodsuckers descended on the small town of Barrow, Alaska during the 30 days of polar night. In the film this downplayed and the whole conflict between the bloodsuckers is gone; turns out the plan was to cover it up by setting fire on the entire town and blaming all the deaths and the destruction on an oil pipeline accident all along…

What were they thinking‽ I remember seeing a clip of them (Carm, Laura, LaF & Perry?) on the run or at least on the road, with Laura making a vlog at a gas station or roadside diner. Is this it? I can do without an hour of ads for pads tbh., so unless there are some entertaining scenes, I think I’ll pass on season 0.
If you do find anything worthwhile of season 0, you could always upload some clips, right? I appreciate you taking one for the team by sitting though season 0.

I watched ‘Corpse Bride’ again for the first time in forever recently, and I found myself enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. It is a musical, with songs written by Danny Elfman, who also voices one of the characters – Burton regulars Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough – as well as Emily Watson, Joanna Lumley, Richard E. Grant & Tracey Ullman. The world of the living was made to look bleak and colourless, like a Daguerreotype or ferrotype photograph and uptight and proper, while the world of the dead/underworld is very colourful and fun. The opening is a mirror of the opening of ‘Sleepy Hollow’, with Ichabod/Victor releasing a red cardinal/butterfly through his opened bedroom window, and both characters make sketches in their journal.

‘Frankenweenie’ is a black & white film, and not a musical, and features a ton of tributes to old horror films Burton grew up watching. A beautiful blend of classic horror characters and homages in a 1960s suburbia setting. The voice cast features Catherine O’Hara, Martin Landau, Martin Short & Winona Ryder.

I may have been a bit harsh calling it an hour+ ad. But the links are there. Definitely didn't have any gas station scenes or anything like that. All scenes are either Carmilla/Laura in the library watching the tapes or Carmilla/Perry/Kersh and the other chick (can't remember her name) in a different part of the uni observed through a camera controlled by the dean I think. I was an ok watch and relatively quick to get through. I recommend watching the movie after season 3 first though because it was much more entertaining. it even has a pg13 sex scene b/w Carmilla and Laura. They also hint that the possibility of a further movies or shows.
I wonder what that is from.

I’ll check it out once I have seen the film then – might as well get through everything. And it’s only twelve episodes, so it shouldn’t take too long to get through.

Since they decided to deviate so much from the original story, I think it would have been nice if they did what Hammer did in ‘The Vampire Lovers’/’Lust For a Vampire’; have Carmilla be brought back in some nefarious blood ritual, and meet a reincarnation of Laura, and both of them having vague (blood-)memories of their past lives, while still having the same original story of the show. I think that would have been an interesting way to connect it to the short story, and even the films too.

I am pretty sure it was the gang after getting away from Silas U and set between seasons 1 & 2. Maybe they made some shorts to connect the two, and prevent a longer gap between the seasons? Now that I think about it, it could have been a Christmas special or something, since I seem to recall it taking place around Yuletide.

Man I'm going to have to go through their YT channel. I only ever clicked on the playlists for the seasons and never checked anything else.

Found it! It was the Christmas special.
There's a BTS video of the special as well: hooktube.com/watch?v=M520HByB1Aw

Full video?

Crikey! You were right about that death scene. Man, that was something else…
It felt like it could be parody of some overly emotional, sappy and long-drawn death scene, but it was done seriously, or as seriously as something is in the show. You’d think having your heart (your physical heart) ripped out would be a pretty quick death that wouldn’t allow for the lengthy exchange of sentimental last words and slowly fading out in the arms of your lover, but I guess I was wrong about that.
Also, I feel like they should have let Danny die at the end of season 2; she wasn’t herself this season, and it was a sad way to leave her character like that…
The full end credits song is pretty neat btw.

Holy shit, the kinda channel has a million of these kind of shows with lesbian content. Looking at all of the thumbnails gives a creepy vibe like the elsagate shit but for slightly older kids or something.

Yep, apparently one can remain conscious and talking for roughly 2 and a half minutes without a heart.

Yes the song is catchy, it's also in the movie. I agree about Danny. It's like they didn't know what to do with her character.

That was cute. What the fuck was the witches accent lol.

Yeah, it’s pretty great, isn’t it? They’ve practically cornered the sapphic YouTube/webseries market!

I was half expecting the boom mike to come into view at the top of the frame, and some stage worker pop into view behind the set decorations during that scene. It might’ve been fun to see them go for that kind of meta humour in the film – using takes where they’ve messed up slightly. Without going overboard of course.

Well, they are Canadian, maybe that has something to do with it? But in all seriousness, there are a lot of highly questionable accents on the show and in the film, mainly fake British accents.

You are right, I did like that.
Btw. Natasha is really showing her dominance with her legs spread like that… Unless she is careful some of the more SJW-esque fans will accuse her of manspreading in the YT comment section.

I just finished the film btw. One thing that’s bugged me since season 2 is that they pronounce ‘Karenstein’ wrong! And to make matters worse, Carm doesn’t correct them, which could have been a nice nod to Mel Brook’s ‘Young Frankenstein’ (“It’s pronounced Fronkensteen”).
We should make a list of what order to watch it in tbh – the three seasons, plus ‘season 0’, the Christmas special, the movie… wew

If the BO doesn’t mind too much I think a sapphic kino thread over at /bestemma/ could be a nice place to discuss these films and series, maybe go a little more indepth…

No probs with that, I just wish they'd drop the bright colours and cutesy music as if it's marketed to primary school children. That shit is creepy. Or are teenagers and young adults really that infantile now?
Exactly, I really was unsure if I was supposed to be taking it seriously (within the confines of the show).
lol but it's truly an atrocious accent
So sexy. She said she likes doing any intimate scenes with Elise the most or something like that. Getting hotter by day.
Only if she transitions
I had no idea, honestly thought it was pronounced steen as well. Actually I just realised I didn't even notice whichever way it's pronounced because it's different in the trilogy isn't it.

Agreed with your idea if the BO doesn't mind.

Short answer: yes. Longer answer: Idunno, ‘Carmilla’ was PG rated at best too, so maybe they are just careful not to do anything too risqué on YouTube? Though they did show blood on the show, and that eye-gouging scene was pretty brutal – even though you don’t get to see it you hear the screaming and see the bloody aftermath. I haven’t looked at their other content, but maybe they make more kiddie friendly shows too? If they only made sapphic webseries ad nauseam, the audiences would get tired of it – eventually – maybe.

I’d even argue it would be better if they went with that and showed that they didn’t take the melodrama seriously. That would show they are self aware and can take a joke.

I take it the blooper reel is her messing up kissing scenes on purpose so they’ll have to do it again then? I forget which one of them commented on corsets in the film, but they were absolutely right; corsets look amazing – health risks be damned, we should bring back corsets.

Knock on wood

I had forgotten just how great ‘The Vampire Lovers’ is! It is beautifully shot, stunning and Gothic sets and terrific performances from everyone involved. It is my favourite Hammer film, and one of the best vampire films too. I’ll have to find it on Blu-ray, this DVD rip I have now just doesn’t do it justice. The scene of Carmilla hearing her name being called, feeling the urge to act on her bloodlust while at the same time looking conflicted & tormented is just beautifully done; you really get that she is being torn between her love for Emma and her vampiric nature.

Swell! If we tell him to check out the Karnstein Trilogy (or at least the two first films), I am certain he’ll be a sapphic kino fan too.

Regarding the pronunciation of Karnstein…
I checked Hammer’s Karnstein Trilogy, and in all three films they use the correct German pronunciation.

You would never guess with webm related. So I pulled out my copy of Deadlier Than the Male after remembering it had Nigel Green in it from Countess Dracula. So fun to watch again. Well coupled with Deadlier Than the Male is the next in the series Some Girls Do. I put it on, and guess who shows up in the opening credits. Mircalla.

sorry for potato quality, my phone is that shit.
