I doubt people still play it but SAMP does this really good, few years ago i used to play in the CrazyBobs CnR and shit cash when the cops chased you or someone placed a bounty on you. You don't get chased by a big spooky monsters but instead it's just another player who you can talk trash at like "EAT SHIT FAGGOT".

They have 2 or 3 giant necromorphs that chase you and you have to fight over 3 or 4 encounters, but not really a big deal.

Alien Isolation is exactly what you want, OP.
You get chased, even the weaker enemies will chase and fuck you up, and since they're androids you have to waste a shit ton of resources to kill them.
Then the fucking Xenomorph has an adaptive AI. Nothing terribly amazing from a technical perspective, but you feel it in game. Try using the same trick too much and it learns that then either kills you or you quickly learn a new trick to escape/injure it until it flees.

Alien Isolation has limited amount of things you can do to ward off the Alien, and it learns not to fear the flame thrower after enough uses.
But game plays for too long and gets boring quick, and AI becomes predictable.

Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth has some absolutely amazing chase scenes including being chased by fish men and then a shoggoth.
The gun play is however quite dull and should never have been made such a large part of the game.

2 has the Ubermorph in the final chapters. 3 has like 4 or 5 regenerating fuckers, mostly on one of the ships, where you stumble upon some cargo boxes with them.

Outlast is pretty close. Probably my favourite horror game, because you don't really ever get the opportunity to fight back. A couple of the inmates are definitely hunting for you though.

The problem with subnautica is that most of the creatures are easily relatable to earth creatures.

Many are crabs mixed with snakes or are extremely brightly colored when it would be bad for something of that size to be announcing "LOL HERE I AM"

The reaper has eyes and a face you can "relate" to with crab legs on the sides. It's body works fine but the "face" looks too… familiar.

Remove the simple two eyes. Remove the simple jaw. Try a proboscus. Remove the human ability to "look it in the face".

Alien Isolation did what you're asking for better than any game in my experience. Mainly because the AI changing it's strategies around you will force you to use different methods, not to mention it's a little creepy. At first when I was playing I went full stealth not using items and I did so by listening for the Alien to enter a vent leaving the area clear, eventually the Alien started instantly leaving it's vent the second it went in, sometimes even doing this repeatedly, waiting for me and trying to lure me out. At this point I had to start using the tools for distraction the game offered as well as other strategies.

I've been hunting in a lot of games, but Isolation was the best at the actual being hunted.

A non-standard chase would be against the Crinale/Lizard Nightmare from Ridge Racer Revolution onwards. Having to be perfect with a car that's not really up to the task is frightening and you have to restart if he passes you Took me years to finally beat this fucker and had a callus from the controller after.

If it toned down the flashing and moved the gun out of the middle of the screen so you could actually see what was going on then it would look pretty fun.
