Whenever a hardcover book doesn't sell, the company usually ships it back to the publisher. What happens to it from there, I'm not sure, but I can speculate that they probably sell it to Amazon or something.
The paperbacks that don't sell, though, are another deal entirely because they're not worth the money to ship them back. They're quite literally not worth the paper they're printed on. Too heavy. They would lose money in the long run.
So, instead, they ship back the covers. Most paperbacks have a barcode on the inside cover, so employees rip the covers off the books and pile them up in boxes to be shipped back. The publishers scan the codes and issue a refund.
As for what happens to the remaining books, they're thrown into the trash. Giant bags full of torn up books sent to the shredder to be recycled, or more often than not, simply sent to add to landfills.
This is the fate that awaits any paperback that doesn't sell in a major retailer. They aren't resold, just destroyed.

Ripping up happy, colorful children's books and throwing them into the trash is one of the most soul-killing things you can possibly imagine. I've probably destroyed a small mountain of Harold and the Purple Crayon, which was one of my favorites when I was young.

In all fairness, I can understand why you want to consolidate your streaming options and your TV together, what with streaming killing old broadcast television. Even with my PC connected to my HDTV, I mostly do that to play back a project when I'm video editing, or emulating old games with a controller. If only the Youtube app they use on smart devices had the options like it does in browsers. I don't see a reason why anyone would want a fucking coloring book.
They never have good art since that would make coloring it in too hard, every page is filled to the brim with shit so you can't just draw in extra shit, and to top it all off the pages are less interlinked than the pages of a fucking How to Draw book.
The least they could do is try to make a coloring book a little more compelling than trying to color in the dalies in a newspaper comic strip collection.

The thing with painting is that it was more of a job, rather than a hobby: in ancient Rome people painted pots to sell them, in Medieval Europe people were paid to paint churches, people in the Renaissance were paid to paint a portret of their daughter, or again to paint the ceiling of a church. Only in the last 200 years(maybe even less), did people start painting just for themselves and not as a job.

by today's standards where society sees video games as hip and cool you're probably right, yeah, but objectively speaking it all depends on how much effort you invest. if the person coloring the pictures invests a lot of effort, trying to color and shade correctly and make it as good as possible then they're probably improving themselves much more than you are with your video games which makes them less pathetic. if they do it just to waste time and drool onto the pages they might as well play video games since they at least require attention and critical thinking to get anywhere.

I don't see the issue with the concept, because I find painting and drawing pretty relaxing so I can see the appeal. I especially like putting together models and gunpla. But that is all building some kind of skill, and feeling rewarded by it, a colouring book is made for children to learn basic motor skills. By adulthood you should really be capable of going to the more advanced arts.

If they're popular in psych wards like other people say, then go for it. I won't begrudge some suicidal guy or some chick strung out in rehab an easy relaxation tool. But to default to that as a healthy person? Seems a bit lazy.
