Sorry but the kid hit puberty and lost the mojo, and thus Steven evolved into a sanitized, preachy, snobbish vacuum of a character and there was nothing of what made him so loveable in the first place: he was so fucking funny. Don't believe me? Go back and watch Steven and the Stevens. It's the funniest shit they ever did and Steven carries the whole thing on his own. Later on the character has to be carried around on tandems just to keep him afloat and he stands there asking questions for the audience to hear endless explanations between each outburst. Once you notice it you will never stop being dissapointed. Even his last gag smelled of desperation, making him behave so unlike himself it could only be the writers fleeing from the pestilent emanations of the rotting corpse of Steven Universe's true soul, which was contained in that single, apparently small episode. That one and Laser Light Cannon were the episodes that built the series in its tone and aesthetic and what really set it apart from the other cartoons for a while. It kind of looked like FLCL sometimes. The only episode that tried to bring those vibes back was the one with the pink biker, and it was really tame because again, teen Steven.

At least once we saw Pearl shapeshift into him for Steven Tag anyway being a clever way to show she has somewhat gotten over some of her Rose trauma, since shapeshifting into him in theory would have been uncomfortable at the very least.
