So the hot meme of this year has been outing artists as having based their drawing(s) on a photo(s). But I don't understand why people think they're so fucking witty for pointing this out?
I get it when it's obviously traced but some of the things people have been "catching red handed" are quite different from the original photo. So it's not copying it's more like using a reference. Not to mention some of the most famous paintings in the world(Including the Mona Lisa that everyone likes to jerk off as the greatest painting of all time or something) are just people painting a real person.
Is this just some nu-age artistic(more like autistic) elitism or what? Like who cares as long as you're not tracing the photo. People use reference all the time, do these people think they're better for making shitty images as long as they did it entirely from the imagination? Is this why half of DeviantArt is fucking garbage?

Dunno about others but I tend to think of it as a crutch, if you need a reference to paint something half decent it just speaks of your deficency as an artist, as painting from imagination and constructing from scratch is more difficult.

But there's also skill in accurate recreations, so I'd say it's only when the purpose isn't doing a study or something that it's cheaty.

In the end is the result that matters though.

I guess people get upset that they're using "easy mode" even though it usually isn't even with refs.

It's because they have it in their head that tracing is bad, but tracing is what Good artists like Frazetta used for his paintings. Except he called it "projections".

Even if not tracing, just referencing photography could get you in trouble because some pro photographers don't like it when you use their stuff without permission. Of course they would have to prove you referenced it.

It's better that you either study from a reference and then make up the entire image, even the poses from imagination or use your own reference. That way nobody can claim trace on your stuff.

Completely tracing images is completely fine from a standpoint of making a funny meme or tracing something, hell, even some animation techniques used in animation use rotoscoping which is basically just making a video and drawing over it (some recent anime did it, "evil" something). If your charging for art and you are just tracing over existing things I take issue with it, but if your just a drawfag in a drawing thread I'm not going to be breaking people's chops for making traced art for free.

What you are talking about is stylization vs realism in your drawing, which is perfectly acceptable depending on the situation. But even heavily stylized works still have a sense of normal anatomy to their "outrageous proportions". Let's take one of the most popular manga Artist's right now, Oda. Luffy is stylized, no arguing that, but his proportions still make sense, emporio is so fucking stylized that it looks disturbing but at least look correct with how the body is holding the weight, your picture here looks more "realistic" than emporio but yours isn't holding itself correctly and looks "off".

As said, you need to learn proper anatomy, before you can fuck up anatomy in a way to get a desirable affect.

Depends on who you are. There are people that do better painting general sections in painting and people better at breaking down things into lines for proportion control, if you want proper anatomy you'll need to know how the skeleton looks and how it differs person by person, but you need to find what works for you.

Donkey Kong's arms don't really have any bones and just wrap around the women, there's nothing that can really be done unless you want to study up on gorilla anatomy, other than that good job user, it's great.

You could also had the tufts of hair for the elbows that you see in DK reference to try and help with that, you also haven't drawn in the fur for the wrists but you said it's a rough so I'm assuming you'll just add that later.

I drew this today

I went to sleep, so here an updated drawing.

So I recently had a sit down and decided to figure out how to draw hands all by myself. I know great-master Loomis has already written entire chapters and books about them, but I wanted to find my own way.

Hands look complex at first, but I took inspiration from video-game history to figure out how to draw them in a very simple and actually quite fast manner. Level of detail is the key-word. The further away you are from an object the fewer polygons are displayed. This made me think. What would be the most basic form you could use to display a hand?
Depends. Are you trying to draw a fist, or a flat hand? I decided to focus on the flat hand first.
A flat hand would be drawn as a rectangle. After looking at my own hands, I decided to simplify the dimensions to 2xa and a. A hand is 1xa wide, 2xa long and (1/10)xa broad. The index finger is slightly shorter than the middle finger. It's base is half as far further down than it is shorter. The ring finger is about as short as the index finger and has it's base on the same level too. The pinky finger is only slightly shorter than the index finger, but it's base is far lower. This lead me to perform two cuts on the rectangle, which lead to the shape you see in number two.
The thumb is complex. It can move around and be a massive pain in the ass. Especially since it changes shapes once you move it, and it has a different shape from every angle. I decided to keep it simple again and hold it next to my other fingers. The thumb looks like another slightly wonky rectangle attached to the side of the original rectangle. It's base is at a slight angle to the original rectangle, and it's tip is very situational, and depends on the hand you look at.

I know this is shit, and I am just as shit at describing, but this is my work and my personal experience.

Nother thing to note is the wrist is about the same width as the index - ring finger width. The length of the thumb is around the size of the first pinky joint. Thumb can be placed in a quarter of the palm. Lastly, joints excluding the thumb are broken in halves. Ie: First joint is half the length of the finger and second joint is half of that.

Not very good at drawing hands myself but some pointers I have gathered from reading some of the mentioned books. (Most indepth from Dynamic Hands but the other two books are good books.)
