I played over 700 hours of single player, you little shit, on 100% difficulty and tried several mods. It's vapid repetitive grindy shit. You build a massive army of top-tier troops and fight endless unchallenging one-sided battles with shitlords. I've never played either the original M&B or Warband despite hearing a lot of good things about it because none of the factions I read the games have seemed interesting to me.

However, apparently the Nova Aetas mod for Warband has an aztec themed faction. Would playing that mod and trying to play/align with that faction be a viable starting point for the series?

It's possible to join the Aztecs as a soldier, but not as anything else I think. You could conquer them then equip your player-kingdom troops with their armour and weapons.

Also, no one actually attacks the Aztecs.
