Do you want grid-based RPG's? or grid-based turn based strat?

lmgtfy.com/?q=what are some good fire emblem like games

Tear Ring Saga

turn based grid

Der Langrisser is like Fire Emblem, but with each of the characters commanding a handful of lesser units.

Shining Force 1 and 2.

Advance Wars > Fire Emblem.
It's like you don't want to fucking shell everything from behind walls of APCs.

That's not hard since liquid shit > Fire Emblem

Advance Wars :^)

new advance wars never ever

To elaborate, Tear Ring Saga was made by the original direct of FE after he left Nintendo. It's for the PSX and has a translation patch.

fucking weebs

Iso > Grid

You realize the two aren't mutually incompatible, right?

After playing it you'll never want to go back to FE.

FE7 and FE8 is literally the worst in the series, too bad that nostalgia won't let the fanboys shut the fuck up about them
FE4 and FE13 are among the best, the FE9 and FE10 series is fine but a little tough to like

...

Do you mean strategy-RPGs, user, or do you mean tactical turn-based, grid-based games? Because if you mean the latter, you really gotta check out Advance Wars.
Play Advance Wars, AW2, and especially Days of Ruin. Well worth playing.

Try that instead

C'mon man, maybe there'll be one by the time you have children. ;_;

Maybe if you like dumbed down gameplay and generic characters.

Better than characters with no conversations
Also Fates Conquest on Hard and Lunatic is the toughest in the series because of the AI, the maps and the enemy skills, unlike the older ones that were difficult because of same turn reinforcements and high count enemies.

...

Anyone played Legend of Heroes / Trails in the Sky?

I really dig the concept and like how everything works in these games, but in 20 years completed only a bunch of them because shit gets boring real fast.
I dunno, it's probably my probalem, but after a few hours I get tired of the same animations and icons/units moving on the screen so I crank the speed and turn combat animations off, and then wonder what the fuck I'm only watching digits going up and down at this point.

From all the non-mech based TRPGs I finished probably only FFT, and even then it was a huge chore.
Games with mechs in them are somewhat better, and even then it still gets boring. I only finished SRWOG 1,2 and Front Mission 3.

Sacred Stones best

All the GBA FEs are boring and drag on too much with occasionally terrible difficulty spikes, only reason they are brought up so often is they are the first to be released in the west and probably everyone's first in the GBA

Yes. They don't really count.

Sacred Stones is most popular just because of that sweet wincest, isn't it?

Since when is Sacred Stones popular? I thougt it was generally agreed to be one of the weaker games in the series. It's decent, but the overworld map messes it up and fighting monsters is less fun than fighting humans.

Well shit I tried not only FEs, I tried Tactics Ogre, Onimusha Tactics, that one PS2 game with beautiful sprite work, the fuck was its name, a whole shitton of different SRW games, Namco x Capcom crossover or something, nothing sticks.
Even other Front Mission games couldn't keep me playing till the end.

I didn't arrive at a point where they meet. I thought it's popular because at that point there were like 10 games all sequels to each other, and Stones was a stand alone so it was easy to pick up without digging through the huge franchise.

If you want a challenge try FE14 Conquest, the plot is kinda bad though.
If you want plot try FE4, it's very reminiscent of A song of ice and fire/Game of thrones.

Otherwise, XCOM with the Long war mod, it's grind based tactics like the OP says but it's sci-fi with some interesting moral questions too, the only game like this that isn't a half assed indie game.

FFT WOTL, why is this game liked?
I tried it recently on an emulator and it seemed average. Clunky controls, not that much difficulty, optional battles. It's like a way less polished Tactics Ogre?

Pic related as an idea for something to play.

interact with them

Always wanted to try black switches. The only downfall of reds/silents is that they're too easy to actuate, which can be obnoxious during typing.

WOTL is a straight port of a 2 decade old game, Tactics Ogre is an enhanced remake of a 2 decade old game.

Heroes of Might and Magic.

Only III and V are worth playing though.

get the 1.3 ez mod for FFT and shut your whore mouth

Yeah, you can play it without having had played the original and only have watched the anime.

Speaking of, the remake of that is fantastic.

Complex faces

Tinder is pretty good.

...

It's babby's first tactical rpg, same shit like with FF7 or FF10 being the best FF, because it's their first one.

I just got the light shard. Save file says: 3 hours in, 55% complete.

It feels like they designed the game on auto-pilot. Like they didn't think critically about their decisions and the game just feels all around dumb. All the NPCs do is spit quest hints at you. Losing health is pretty meaningless since you can carry shit tons of food items. If you've played Shantae 2 or 3 you'll know how the platforming and combat feels, no improvements made. A lot of the transformations overlap and aren't fleshed out at all. One particularily rancid offender is the mouse. That fucking maze shit when you're trying to get the light shard is grade-A bad design, good lord. The writing is bland. They didn't even try to make an overarching plot which is probably for the best.

Pros: Most of the environments look good, music is good. The magic system isn't that great but I like it better than the previous item system. Fetch quest shit is still as unsatisfying and dumb as the last game but at least they make it very obvious which direction you're supposed to go in. Level design is good for the most part.

OVERALL it's probably the best Shantae game, honestly, but I didn't think 2 and 3 were that good.

This series

The who?

THIC
H
I
C

Three was the last game in the series, user.

youtube.com/watch?v=3UnK5rw_6hM

Kamidori

Yes, III is overall the better game, but I'll never understand the hate V, despite being so good, gets.

Riviera is all right, although I remember it being annoying and grindy at times.
Yggdra I could never get into.

Fuck off shu!

V was not a good heroes game and undeserving of ever being considered part of the same series as 3. It's a decent fangame.

...

To be fair, it wasn't made by the same people, so we could go with that.
Still worth playing.

Eador Genesis is the true successor to Heroes 3.

Agreed I only buy consoles because they're the best.

There's nothing wrong with Heroes 2.

Watch Kiki's Delivery Service

I'LL

The RX 470 is great card, you didn't JUST yourself.

I don't know how to ask this gracefully so I'll just go right ahead - does Khajit suck dick for coin?

The genre mashups Sting does shouldn't work, but they do.

Yggdra union is a personal favorite.

well you tried I guess

I promote for a home improvement company

Team boner is me and alexander, and I'm pretty sure team brownies is brow/pivi

There is also the word "boring". This fucking word.

Yesterday, some 18-20 yo kid on Holla Forums said System Shock 2 was boring because he didn't know where to go. Fucking hell.

Friendly Reminder Advanced Wars > Fire Emblem

Strategy of all units. Turn based. funds mechanics. capture mechanics. construction mechanics. fights can last 30min to even 40 end game

"Which unit should I fight this one against to level it up?"
and
"Which relationship should I level up?"

What is the best BK burg and why is it the TENDERCRISP BACON CHEDDAR RANCH

fire emblem

Mormon Jesus.

Yes, but for not those type of games. Like Lucky's tail, hell no!

I like the look of a lot of VR games, but I will never own a VR set. It's a shame really.

Is it today officially shit taste in video games day?

TS2 was awesome

It's not a landmark in anything, RPGs, open-wold games or otherwise. It does so many of the same things games like Skyrim or DA:I did, but somehow gets a pass and is GOTY instead. It introduces nothing new to the genre and does nothing to push it forward while relying almost entirely on its narrative, not its gameplay, to drive the entire game.

I am baffled as to why its put up on such a pedestal, it was one of the least-engaging games I've played in a while. At least other shallow WRPGs allow you to actually role-play, Geralt is fucking boring. People just have no fucking idea what immersive actually means at this point when shit like this, TLOU or Uncharted are touted as the most immersive experiences the medium has to offer. It's all on the surface level, visual fluff and spectacle, there's little/no depth.

Sure you can, just dont expect cheap prices. I hear the retro market over there has been booming ever since Europe/US started importing a lot more.

...

LOW

He's right though

I'm so confused. Why do none of these replies match the post they are in reply too?

It's the spam. I think Bui's stealing it from relecant boards.

Spammer using threads from 4chan/trash/. There are threads about it on /baph/

I know this is a bot holy fuck that's some cancer right there.

That's the idea

Sting is a studio you can put your faith in for tactical gameplay. They are making dungeon crawlers now but DT2 is still top tier fun.

I wouldn't say Fates Conquest on Lunatic is the most difficult, I'd say 10 takes that because they remove the Weapon Triangle and make you rely on Biorhythm, disabling saving in battle, and of course, the legendary Down's Brigade.

I think I have shit taste.

I haven't tried advance wars or langrisser yet but intend too, along with fantasy general. I like games where you either command an army or a group of individuals, but not games that present a group of individuals as an army without a convincing abstraction. I generally don't like permadeath as it's really just a reset trigger and prevents fights from going down to the wire; I don't think it works positively as a game mechanic in most of the games it's implemented in.

I shouldn't even be asking this, but, where should i start with Super Robot Wars?

Well

Finding keys to open doors for several hours is boring to most people. Not everyone is able to get a dopamine rush off atmosphere.

OG 1 and 2 for the gameboy are in English if you want to play with the Super Robot Wars original characters, otherwise Alpha Gaiden and J have english romhacks and the more recent PS3 Z games have english-asian releases you could import.

If you actually learn Japanese there's like fifty of the damn games. I guess it would make sense to start with the alpha series starting on PS1.

youre so full of it

I really tried to like Fire Emblem 14, but I can't I don't know, it just seems so bloated.
I put 10 hours into it and didn't have any fun at all.

Steam Marines
Bahamut Lagoon

Has anyone played Mercenary Saga 2?

What's a fast paced SRPG?
So far I've played Fire Emblem games on GBA and X-Com if that even counts. Battle Ogre is waaaaaay too much for me, I grew up with FPS games rather than strategy games.

Preferably, I'd like to play it on my PSP (SNES emulation excluded because it's dodgy and sometimes refuses to work and just freezes the whole thing). To demonstrate how small of an attention span I have, the only 2 RPGs that I've finished are Paper Mario and Terranigma.

You should check out JA2.

truly a tragedy

Hard to agree more. Rock, paper, scissor gameplay is fucking awful.

Played the first 10 hours. Combat has 0 depth to it, you just max out your limit gauge or whatever they name it in that game, get to the boss and curb stomp it. Basically the same thing as Final Fantasy X. Non-combat elements are also complete garbage.

This. The early versions of 1.3 are fucking glorious.

mega.nz/#!z1AEVDqa!-uZOZnXmji3ZJcFjWerEYCvMYbewqfJ8DK4BJJ0YqVU

Solid gameplay (as in, it functions well), decent story, good characters and lots of customization. It was better than the other options available at the time on consoles by a long shot, too.

Shit gameplay. Porn will leave your wrist aching and your dick raw.

Try RTS instead?

Is the whole game brown?

On a PSP? Nah.
Besides, the only RTS I ever got into (you know, aside from Starcraft and Red Alert) was Emperor: Battle for Dune. Just not my kind of thing. I can't think ahead in real time, so either I get a pause button to assess the situation and command my troops (a-la Freedom Force or grid based TRPGs) or let me fight in the moment on my own (every shooter ever). I know I'm being a picky cunt

SS is the best entrypoint because it doesn't have a fuck million ties to the rest of the series. It's isolated and complete, and frankly has the best character writing and supports of the series. Also it has L'Arachel.

It's a pretty brown game but the gameplay makes up for it. It's one of few games that I consider 10/10 perfect.

you got that webm of all the guns the shop has to offer?

what mods are you using nigger

FE always felt like the Cat Mario of SRPGs to me. Not actually hard, just relying on the player being ignorant of what happens next.

Not gonna bother with FE given where it seems to be heading
This must be how Kaga fans felt after FE6

Just play the Jugdral games and you're golden.

I have. Playing them and TRS made me realize how far the series really fell after Thracia.

Anybody?

Those two don't really go together.

Relatively fast.
As in every action's animation doesn't take 5 minutes and/or can be skipped.

Best CO coming trought

Thats pretty much all of them
You can just skip the battle animations

Are there any TRPGs or turn based simulations (outside of Civ) that do hexgrids?

Nigger do you even 4X?

I mean besides 4X shit, which is why I did not include Civ. 4X isn't tactical usually, either.

If you've never played any other 4X game besides Civ please keep your goddamned mouth shut.

Armaggedon isn't a 4X btw

I might be a complete babby when it comes to strategy games and even I know that's simply not true.

King's Bounty after Legend

So are the HoMM and Eador games, I don't know up to which ones, though.

Strategy =/= Tactics

I'll admit that on top of being illiterate when it comes to strategy games I'm also a non-native English speaker.
Now I have to say that you're either splitting autistically small hairs here or just baiting.
Because this all reads exactly the same to me.

Chess

It's your ESL that is fucking you up. It is a matter of scale. To simplify it strategy is your grand over arcing plan. Tactics are the small scale plans you use to accomplish your strategy. Granted it is a lot more subtle than that, but that is the easiest way to explain it to an ESL.

This, basically.

Battle for Wesnoth

wesnoth.org/

But don't you still have to micro shit in 4X games, like positioning and picking which direction you'd want to go? I know it's not real-time, but still.

I don't even know what your retarded argument was about. I just came to shitpost and stayed to explain the difference between two words to you, shitskin.

Shining Force II and Warsong(AKA Langrisser 1) were both superior.

Superior nostalgiafag gameplay right here
Kagacucks will defend the marching simulator

Battle for Wesnoth

Fuck that game, worse than Disciples too with the enemy getting free levels endlessly.

T-this reminded me of, Advance Wars.

Also pic related is best girl.

I cannot, for the life of me, get why people like this game.
I dumped probably 15 hours into it and while some of it was cool, it felt pretty wasted.

user plz
in case you really don't know, Fire Emblem and Advance Wars are made by the same developer: Intelligent Systems.
They also did the GBA Metroid games

Oh really? Didn't know that.

Do they still make Fire Emblem games or did they abandon that too?

How fucking new are you?
Yes but they're shit

So nothing changed. There will never be another succesor to the Advance Wars series.

RIP Cyrus, my delicate little flower. ;_;

You're a fag

If you're okay with multiplayer: awbw.amarriner.com/

Nah, just (bi)curious. I don't want to ever bottom or suck a dick. I just admire beauty.

I remember trying it and hating the UI. Why can't we do multiplayer through some sort of emulator?

You're a fag

Nah.

I came here to mention this.

Get good and learn to strategize so that you have contingency plan on top of contingency plan in case of failure in case of failure.

It's because you have shit taste and you became confused by people playing good video games.

Fire Emblem's original Creator made an indie game called Vesteria Saga and released it free a few months ago.

No one has take up effort to translate it yet

fuck him desu

yep, fag.

Is it as bad as Deadly Games? Because it would have to be a hell of a lot fucking better than that turd for me to respect anyone's opinion who recommends 2.

You getting punished because you got a lucky RNG crit is fucking stupid.

soul nomad?

i want a mario trpg

Jagged Alliance 2 is a timeless classic but it's not a game you can play without reading the manual.

The GBA AWs can be played online over Mednafen. Old Holla Forums rarely has successful threads for it.

It finally got released? Nice.

Disgusting. Fog of war should be standard in any turn based tactical game, or any tactical focused game where you have a birds eye view.
I just really want to make something that's like a Wargame clone but in turn based Advance Wars style. Someday.

If my choice is between the occasional slog to not disconnect the story from the gameplay and whatever the fuck Birthright was then I'm picking the prior

The only game in the entire genre that isn't shit is FFT. You literally can't even dispute this.

Front mission? Ogre?

Devil Survivor 1 and 2?

FM1 is the only good Front Mission game and it lacks any semblance of depth. TO is just FFT but significantly less refined.

Never heard of them.

ah I see, you're just talking out your ass
should have guessed

Not an argument.

but you're the guy who hasn't heard of devil summoner and pretends FFT is significantly more refined than Ogre
you think this is a phd defense? a courtroom? any sort of serious debate, stefan?

Not a refutation of valid points.

Look at this loser who posed a statement without backing it up with any semblance of fact.

UFO: Enemy Unknown is the best grid-based, turn-based, team-based tactics game out there. It is because I say so. It's still a pretty good game regardless of this pointless baiting

Trips confirm, everyone go home.

Mednafen is crap, use MAMEHub for GBA multi-user control.

I don't even wish for Monkey-Paw tier shit, I just want to remember the good memories of playing fun and non politically driven war games without Nu-tendo fucking them over

You mean Fates is shit.

nice taste

Try this, check gameplay vids on jewtube if you want.

Muh ultra nigger. Such a good game

Agreed, also enjoyed the mission variety.
My only complain would be that I want more post game content.

aeon genesis translated 1-3 and alpha gaiden

i started with 3 and it's pretty good. the only thing to keep in mind with srw is that it adheres more to anime logic than to game logic in many regards. certain units/pilots are completely useless while main characters can practically clear maps by themselves
