There was one or two asian dudes that would make regionals and nationals sometimes. These were mostly Street Fighter 2 tourneys, but often they would include other games like MK, KI, VF, and SS. The regional and national champs were always whites.

Most people think that but it does help a lot to rewatch matches since for every moment you realise you did something wrong there's a bunch more leading up to it that you missed. Watching your matches back as a spectators lets you see all the spacing issues and space control you tend to lack that leads to the noticeable fuck up situations.

Most games come with tutorials that guide you through basic input. Once you get used to the motion of your left thumb (not pressing too much or doing it too fast) it really isn't that hard. Just like competitive Arena Shooters aren't all that much about shooting, competitive fighting games are not really about pulling off specials, but about managing resources, distances and knowing when it is safe to fight back or how to draw in your enemy. There is more to it, but your best bet is to start by learning how to pull off some of the basics on tutorial and then watching some explanation videos on how to do proper zoning/spacing, specially if you intend to play online.

Then they are casual and will never get good.

Getting into fighting games when no one you know play fighting games is hard, having someone to play with IRL is a good way to get better or even a reason to improve (you get more competitive when you're up to someone face to face).
