I have gone through something like 20 image editing programs over the past several months LOOKING for a decent retro image editing program and have found exactly goose egg! Half of this shit I've found can't even save to gif or bmp. Krita has done nothing for me. Had to reinstall GIMP something 3 times and MOTHERFUCKER it only has Floyd–Steinberg dithering. I just need an image editor that has simple ordered bayer dithering so I can make comfy CGA art and maybe someday even make a game. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Also let's have a nice peaceful AESTHETIC retro art thread. We can also talk about good PC-98 games too.
I have Paint.NET and rely on it a lot but as far as I know it can't do bayer dithering. Unless there is some secret plugin that everyone else has but me.
It's really a classic.
Kayden Perez
It does, yes.
Haven't found one other than what you mentioned.
Ethan Clark
Gainax was still good at the time
Colton Morgan
I find that bitch incredibly homely but the arm-length gloves are a huge turnon and I'd hatefuck her just because of them.
Jose Carter
What's really driving me crazy is that GIMP use to give you the choice between Bayer and Floyd–Steinberg at some point.
Not really Get some images with more color contrast Those usually work better
Zachary Cruz
how do i dither art? any good tutorials?
Samuel Ortiz
You can't make this shit up.
Grayson Thompson
...
Logan Taylor
Can I emulate the PC98 software they would have used to make their dither art? I wonder what they used.
Noah Hernandez
Thanks. This might be something I can work with. The only problem is that Stucki dithering seems to crash the plugin. I'll have to avoid that.
I see… I can't decide whether the GIMP version or the Paint.NET version has the better algorithm. (Excluding the 3-bit version which would look fine with a CGA palette but is not good with normal colors.)
Ryan Jenkins
Kill yourself. Or let me kill you.
Asher Richardson
...
Joseph Collins
oooh,tan lines,that's some good shit
Jeremiah Lee
80s-90s dither art and vaporwave is hyper comfy.
Daniel Hughes
It's a bad piece though. You can tell the artist is shit by his inability to properly convey the physical objects in the room. Very bad.
Andrew Lewis
not sure how you see that. seems fine to me. the pink nipples are questionable but oh well
Leo Cook
It's less which algorithms' better, but more about what you're doing it to.
Don't fuck it up, like those "vaporwave" faggots do. Try to apply it only to properly vectored images, or redraw the image yourself, if you have to. Applying it to any picture you find is just ass.
Jason Cook
GIMP looks better to me, since it has those sections of solid color rather than dithering the entire image.
That's not very nice, user.
Dylan Howard
I'm not quite sure what you mean, nothing seems too overly big or small.
Ryan Jackson
Kill yourself. Apologia to the loli's family in the suicide note.
Chase Brown
No, no. No.
This has nothing to do with your tumblr garbage. Leave.
Andrew Turner
They're crude and poorly depicted. In other words, nigga can't draw. Even the girl looks deformed. Bad example.
Nicholas Howard
Eh,looks fine to me,but if you got different standards that's fine too.
Levi Gonzalez
To bad they "updated" the pm2 art in steam
Samuel Price
I oddly kinda know that feel OP. One time I went to Exhentai, typed in PC98 and such and just enjoyed aesthetic. What I then did was try to make wallpapers by cropping the scenes into some denomination of 16:9 and then scaling them up. Sadly many did not lend themselves well to that aspect ratio.
One time I also fraternized with the idea of making a visual novel in the same style. What I tried was I use to have a program that let me go so far as to decide what each color was but I can't remember the name.
For instance here is the protag from the latest tales of game that has sadly been censored by Bandai Namco, not her attire just the titular moment that defines her character. A pretty shotty example but first image is the source. 2nd is if you scale down and then dithered. 3rd is the one I like which is scaled down last so it has harsher gradients and such.
It seems borderline retarded to use scaling as a tool like that but we are talking about small images.
Samuel Morgan
Bro, just let it happen.
Nathan Cook
Get some taste and ascend
Its like one of the many early 90s mindfuck violent animes I watched as a kid. Everytime its posted I watch it tillthe end and think to myself: "what the fuck am I doing with my life? I saw most of this edgy disgusting crap voluntarily, I masturbate to some of it even. Why do I want to play vidya all day and lurk the interwebs nearly 24/7" And then I continue posting here while trying to find more obscure interesting stuff.

What would that be considered? New Retro Wave?
Also good, but after a long day of work, coming home and taking a nap with some shitty youtube vaporwave mix playing is the most restful experience you'll ever know.
Henry Sanchez

Anime a shit. Not only are the execs boy-molesting globalist fruits who outsource to Jurea, but their racial genocide is practically in freefall. Just compare freaking Stardust Crusaders 2015 to the 90's OVA, and you can see how heavily they've declined since the 80's ended, and their economy tanked like Germany's.
Eli Cox
A lot of the early DOS and PC-98 games are dithered as part of the compression techniques. Basically they would draw the background or character irl (usually ink and graphic marker) and then scan it into the computer and rasterize and compress it. Then they would do pixel touch ups if needed. You CAN do it by hand if you are doing pixel art by hand but you'll probably want to stick to a very simple method like in this pic. Basically a very simple kind of ordered dithering, not the more complex Bayer ordered.
Carter Smith
Here are some of the images I cropped and scaled to 1080p.
Kevin Reed
seriously its fucking sexy. i would love to play games with this style. Thanks for the info though, i wanna try this method of art.
Chase Harris
>>>/tumblr/ Take your "fashy" alt-right shit with you.

Vaporwave takes inspiration from NRW/Synthwave and Mac/win95 glitchart. The latter being ironic pieces of non-art with SHADES OF PINK AND PURPLE ontop of everything and the earlier being parodies or copies of late 80's Neonwave aesthetics along with Pop culture movie references of the time.
Bentley Ortiz
Don't get me wrong, user. I fully agree that New Retro Wave and Synthwave are wholly superior. In fact, most of the stuff that ends up in those hour+ youtube mixes are just synthwave anyways. That doesn't stop them from being super relaxing and hitting that perfect hypnogogic feeling that is ideal for napping.
The audiovisual shitpost nature of it can be a bit fun, though.
Kevin Rogers
This isn't completely relevant but it's something to keep in mind when partially or totally mimicking retro computer graphics.
Cameron Martin
You know you're proving my point right now?
Austin Gutierrez
Can I get some examples? I had this kind of discussion in a thread a while back but no one could point me in any sort of direction.
The art I'm seeing OP posting I think is circa the '80s. I've seen it associated with the vaporwave / A E S T H E T I C trend, but I've thought that was an early to mid '90s kind of thing. What's the deal? Which is which? I'd love to know, because I do happen to enjoy both that '80s sorta hotline miami vibe, as well as the the whole vaporwave thing.
Ian Scott
Part 2. Someone should really webm these for pixelart/retro game threads.
Leo Lewis
good lord
Joseph Diaz
For krita, there's a specific way to set 'er up for pixel art, and I believe it also has Dither filters. Just look up "krita pixel art"

Its called Synthwave you retard NewRetroWave is a reference to NewWave due to the 80s revival stuff. Heres some vaporwave you pleb
Austin King
Here's an indirect explanation for the "VAPORWAVE color palette".
Nathan Watson
In other words, it's pisstaking, and everyone taking it seriously is a moron.
In reality, if you're seriously looking for something of an older article with some genuine quality to it, it's just New Romantic, or New Wave, as it was later called, an umbrella term for Anti-Disco and Synth coming from Europe into the US after the country got jewed out of Disco by (((Rock & Roll))) companies with the Disco Demolition Night of 1979.
Alexander Kelly
Even though Vaporwave sounds cool and looks cool with the art, it's still fucking Diana Ross slowed down and given weird filters. There are more interesting themes out there than what amounts to a musical shitpost painted in pink with palm trees, a 1994 Mac and a bottle of Fiji Water in the background.
Though Neonwave aesthetics in comparison like m.youtube.com/watch?v=rDBbaGCCIhk are simply something else, now those are radicool without any of the ironic shitposting behind it. Can't embed in everychan fucking codemonkey fix this shit nigger
Xavier Martinez
That is?

Great taste Someones not European Eurobeat was normalfag music before these shit tier DJs Miles better, but still, most of it was shit Had to listen to this every Sumner during my chilhood, how does that make you feel? Good Eurobeat is extremely rare
Charles Turner
Gotcha
So this kind of stuff is called Neonwave? That's the name for the 80's style art and music, that kinda Hotline Miami ish stuff?
Chase Hughes
I know it's utter shit and it's "ironic" humor more than anything else, like Simpsonswave and all the other -wave audio shitposts… But it's perfect napping music. Synthwave and Neonwave are fucking great, but they fulfill a different musical need.
Jose Foster
Retrowave
Luis Rivera
I've got ya.
The hot pink aesthetic of the late 80s/early 90s also influenced the vaporwave color choices.
Jordan Smith
Tried again, I'm a little glad at how the Reimu dither looks here but I don't know how I did on the Mario ones.
Dylan Robinson
That's a difference I think I can tell for sure. If stuff is bright and vibrant, it's supposed to be the neon of the '80s. The '90s has the same kind of palette, just dulled and more fuzzy.
I assume people follow that "rule" because they're retarded and just don't know better?
Nathaniel Myers
i like it
Hudson Nguyen
Made some of these
Tyler Stewart
It's not exactly called Neonwave. has it right with it being just simply being named NewWave (thus New Retro Wave nowadays). The main proponents of it are Synthwave musical artists and 80's Neon enthusiasts. The color pallete is similar to Vaporwave but with less pinks and more blues along with scanlines, tron-like cyberspace square "3D" landscapes and 80's advertisements for movies such as Cobra, Commando, They Live, etc. Less ironic, more of a homage for that era.
Nicholas Price

So does that Vaporwave as a whole is some ironic, 2deep4u hipster bullshit and that's all it ever was supposed to be?
Not that I care, I enjoy the laid back vibe of it and the art/artstyle takes me to a certain place only that kind of 90s stuff can. I'm going to enjoy it regardless of whether or not a bunch of San Fran faggots thought it was groundbreaking shit.
Nathan Gonzalez

You have to save it fresh to png or gif (or bmp). Once saved to jpg you can't fully convert it back.
Carter Lopez
But that's not vaporwave though?
Christian Rivera
The whole point of dithering is to use limited colors to display a complex image. png and gif files keep the image intact, while jpg compression fucks with the image and increases it to more than 16 colors.

James Jenkins
The only "NewRetroWave" I know of is the youtube channel. I've never heard the genre of synthwave referred to with that name.
That's Future Funk, not vaporwave.
Eurobeat is a meme. It sounds like what modern House would be derived from. Especially with things like
Yes. Vaporwave was always a meme.
Exactly. Hardly any of it is remotely original.
MN84 is part of the greater synthwave genre, along with Lazerhawk (posted earlier) and many others. Never seen "neonwave" used to describe any of it. my normalfag friends say MN84 is jazzercise
Essentially. It was always a meme and that's the only reason it caught on.
I like it.
The more prominent name for it is synthwave. Retrowave is used as well but not as often by itself (it is usually tagged with synthwave).
It sounds like a combination between vaporwave and lo-fi. Definitely not funk.
Dithered art is now a fetish of mine. Holy shit my cock hasn't been this hard in a while. Thank you Holla Forums.

Owen Bennett
Yeah, I can get that much. Vaporwave is ironic meme'ing in audio form.
Hard to call a thing what it is when you think it's one thing, but it's actually another thing identified by very specific qualities that you have not been educated on.
Adrian Cook
That's a damn fucking shame. Oh well.
Benjamin Gutierrez
I still find it enjoyable, in an odd way, but that's badwrong fun, according to the meme authorities.
Parker Lee
Oh me too, I enjoy because it makes me feel oddly nostalgic and hopeful. I'm not gonna stop liking shit just because the "wrong people" like it. It's a shitty reason to not enjoy things.
Cooper Reyes
It does a pretty good job of evoking a sense of hynogogia, which is the feeling of being between wakefulness and sleep.
Tyler Phillips
Oh absolutely, it's a guilty pleasure for sure. I can see why people wouldn't like listening to it, as it's mostly amateur work with FL Studio.
David Morales
You fags done jerking each other off, yet?
Jordan Diaz
That's why you get fucking educated, mate.
See the title? That's what the art's called. The music is synth. Nothing else. Don't blanket it with a marketing term, like some fucking square.

It's all synthetized instruments, are you deaf or have you never heard of the term synthesizer before? Like the definition of the genre is electro-disco wave from the 80s with synthesized masterization. It's why it sounds in that unique way it does and why it is the umbrella term despite every artist doing his own take on it.
Levi Reed
Now you're just being retarded on purpose. Terrible.

I have a smart phone with a 1080p screen so this neat idea popped into my head of making my phone's lock screen into a clothed image and my home screen into a less clothed one. So when I swipe up to unlock it switches seamlessly between the 2 backgrounds. I love it.

thanks for this I was trying to do this a couple hours ago but couldn't find the right programs
Jose Murphy
scale = resize. resize the image to somewhere near a resolution used by a classic system in high rez mode, say 500-700 pixels wide. PC-88 and PC-98, along with other systems often used high rez video modes that had more horizontal resolution than vertical. This gives the appearance of "tall" vertical pixels that are twice as tall as they are wide. To get this, further resize the image to half the height vertically. Once you resize the image back to the original height, you get tall pixels.
neat

Christopher Baker
When i was a kiddo i had a notebook with some kind of CRT screen, and it was a really shitty screen. The thing had a really slow refresh rate (15-20fps?) and the motion blur of one frame would last seconds. Basically whenever you had motion on it the image became a barely understandable gigantic blur, and any single pixel would bleed out to a trillion surrounding ones. Which worked "just fine" when you wanted to do office shit but any games were completely unplayable even on the eyes of someone in the 80s

Looked it up on youtube and it sounds the same. Very little difference between songs.
It doesn't take talent to use Fruity Loops to copy another song and change the pitch. Maybe some artists use midi controllers? I'm not saying that it's all literally just 4 part beats repeated over and over, but a lot of it is.
This stuff has the same issues with it as modern House: there is very little variance in the sound from song to song, and it's all sampled. Samples are cancer when they comprise your entire fucking song.
Embed related uses actual synthesizers and drum machines.

The guitars and vocals are only half of it though. Are the beats not sampled?
You could post something with a unique sound compared to what I've found to back up your claim. Every song I've heard sounds the same.
There are different kinds of memes. I'm not saying eurobeat doesn't sound catchy, because it does and it honestly isn't terrible. But it's what you play against videos of things going fast sideways. No one listens to it casually.

This was a good thread and I think everyone on Holla Forums now knows how to dither. Wish we could have got more into PC89 games. Maybe next time.

Wanted to see what would happen if I tried doing stuff to a 3D image. When I look at it it feels like I'm looking at an anaglyph without glasses on.

A friend of mine is a huge Ace Combat fan and wanted me to dither Kei Nagase. I'm quite pleased with the results.
Nathaniel Perez
I am not quite pleased with the results. It looks quite shit.

Does anybody know of a comprehensive CRT shader for MPC? I would like for my video player to emulate an old cathode ray television but I seemingly can't find anything, unlike for emulators. It's frustrating.
Jaxon Bailey
You might think you want this, but you don't. And the reasons why are the same reasons such a thing doesn't exist. Learn more about CRTs.
Xavier Perez
You can't really make LCDs look like CRTs, most of the filthers that "try" to emulate the experience just make them worse. Just get an old CRT that works well enough, wherever you are you should be able to find one for cheap.
