I'm pretty sure 06 was released in Japan after the Western releases. It's almost like Sonic is a heavily western-oriented series or something when given Sega's non-Japanese origins, Sonic's 2kool4u marketing campaign in the 90s and early 2000s (which was so successful it spawned an inane shitload of similar "looney tunes with attitude" characters that hit the bricks), and that most people involved with Sonic games in the first place are Westerners.

No, Japan going over Sonic with a fine-tooth comb before it gets to them isn't some quality differential, it's changes and localization of their own. Hell, the voice-actors can be explained away as decent VAs being hard to find in eastern countries because they don't have the sheer vocal range that westerners do, it's why you see the same VAs pop up in shitloads of animated stuff and video games while people like the Elder God's VA in Legacy of Kain pop up for that role and no other in any other game.

5 failures? There was Boom, and I think I heard Lost World had mixed reception, but Generations and Colors were received well, and before that was Unleashed, which was mixed again.

So out of the last five games, two were successes, and only one was outright failure.

Most Sonic games are released in Japan first, and even a lot of the ones that are released in Japan slightly later (still only a few total) are still made first in Japanese and then changed for western releases.

Reminder that Robotnik was called Eggman IN-GAME in Sonic 2. Japanese canon is best canon. Sonic Adventure's Chaos plot was being foreshadowed since Sonic 2, and the filthy gaijin "localization" removed all of it.

IIRC the character profiles also give a little more detail to this aspect of the story.

Knuckles Chaotix even gets in on the action. In fact, the whole thing is a tie in to that story, instead of it just being a subplot building in the background like the previous games had. But the "localization" removed the whole story and just said "Knuckles and his friends go to a Carnival Island."

Also of note is that some of the proposed stories for Sonic X-Treme (the cancelled game for Saturn) were also about this. They involved ChaosDOOM, either the group of evil echidna elders who abused the emeralds in the past (later became Pachacmac), or a virus made by them. They were sealed in the Master Emerald after using the Rings of Order (the opposite of the Chaos Rings) to harness the energy of the Chaos Emeralds, while the Chaos Rings harnessed the power of the Master Emerald (which of course can be used to bring order to the Chaos Emeralds).

The fact that the new ones are written by westerners, particularly westerners who don't give a shit, is the problem. They used to have good scripts. Even Unleashed at least struck a balance, but Colors and forward were written by people who clearly didn't even like the series, for people who didn't like the series.

Also, regarding Sonic '06, it at least had a pretty cool story for Shadow, and the Silver story was mediocre at worst. Keep in mind, when Japanese Sonic was having vague furry undertones with a princess (because "fans" kept screaming for Sonic to have a simpler story where Robotnik was the bad guy, so Sega straight had him kidnap a princess), American Sonic was doing pic related.

I like the Japanese engrish for shitpost potential. Dialogue doesn't seem too different, but I actually prefer the US voice just for how fitting it is.
Much more fitting and appealing voice, I've never liked their decision to cast US VA's who don't sound like children but instead sound like adults pretending to be children. Dialogue seems to be written more reasonably, too.
I prefer the English VA but in retrospect Knuckles has always been less 'tough guy' and more 'asshole' so I think Japanese VA might be more fitting.
English VA is more fitting, even if he has a massive nose the withdrawn and nasally sound of the Japanese VA isn't very well chosen.

Both VA's suck, dialogue is at least more genuine in Japanese, but it relies on "cute girl" stereotypes absent in the US.
Japanese VA is less grating, still bad on both ends. More convincingly 'young' in JP because lolasians.
English VA is actually better for this one, dialogue is Biggs-tier and therefore irrelevant.
Japanese VA is slightly less obnoxious and more "stupid detective" rather than "stupid useless person".
