Dubai: Students who survived the Florida school shooting that killed 17 people say the US should look to Australia if it wants to prevent another tragedy. After weeks of funerals, tears and flashbacks, three teenagers from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have taken their campaign for gun control overseas.
Lewis Mizen, a 17-year-old who hid in a cupboard as a gunman opened fire on his classmates last month, singled out Australia and Japan as model countries for gun reform. “Australia had a very rampant gun culture and after a mass shooting they immediately changed their laws and there hasn’t been a mass shooting since,” he told Fairfax Media at the Global Education and Skills Forum in Dubai. His classmate Kevin Trejos said in an ideal world, the US would adopt similar gun laws to Australia.
“It’s going to be so difficult but we will keep fighting,” the 18-year-old said. The students were referring to former Australian Prime Minister John Howard’s swift response to Australia’s deadliest mass shooting. After 35 people were killed at Port Arthur in 1996, the federal government banned semi-automatic rifles and shotguns and bought and destroyed more than 600,000 firearms.
The Valentine’s Day shooting has once again reignited debate in the US about gun control. It has also sparked a nationwide movement for gun reform spearheaded by the so-called “Columbine generation”. These young people have never known school without mass shootings. This week, thousands of US students marched out of their classrooms to demand action on gun control. Next week, it’s expected that half a million people will descend on Washington DC to call for new laws to tackle gun issues. The Florida survivors hit out at US President Donald Trump’s plan to arm teachers with guns to prevent mass shootings. They said more guns were never the answer. “Teachers are there to educate their students,” Lewis said. “They shouldn’t have to serve as a first line of defence between them and a rampant gunman on campus.”
Do they realized why Australia and Japan were able to do it? It is not simply because of the guns, but because of their geographic location and the type of people that live there.

We have a decent amount of guns but coincidentally we don't have many blacks (only about 2-3% of the population [if you watched/read our median you'd think we have ten times that though]) and virtually no Hispanics, and we're slightly whiter than the US still.
