Street Fighter V wins best fighting game of 2016 at the game awards 2016.

Fighting game newfag here. I have a question about KoF, how come it went from sprite art in 13 to full on 3D models in 14? Do graphical switches like that affect anything or is it just a matter of controls?

It's cheaper and faster to make 3d models these days.

KoF went from Sprites to 3d models because of the budget difference. SNK nearly went bankrupt again with KoF XIII, and most of the characters had their movesets unfinished.

KoF 13's sprites were extremely expensive and took 6 months per character to make. The movesets and character designs took a hit because of the cost/dev time.

I main Rose in that game. Her back dash is your most powerful alley not much can catch it. I typically play keep away and make the other guy chase me the entire round. If they get close stuff whatever with a drill/EX drill or reflect, if they even think about jumping go for the dp. If you're not doing either of those zone 'em with fireballs and reflects.

Capcom lost the license after the Disney deal and it too expensive to renegotiate. Apparently this time it was Marvel's gaming production team who approached Capcom to do Infinite (They approached Insomniac and Telltale as well so they have an overall plan) and it's a long term deal.

No balance patch or netcode changes (Same netcode as the 360 version). The framerate problems with some moves and all stages are gone, though.

QLOC did the port so that is good news for PC as well. At the very least that will be the version to get if people can crack it and make a community patch.

Her c.mp is a great normal that you should abuse a lot since it hits far and beats most things. You can also link c.mp from c.lp and I think c.lk so try to learn that since that can be helpful. Another cool thing is that you can do a combo into her genei jin super then into her CC instead of having to activate CC by itself

Rocket will probably be there thanks to the GotG movie. Otherwise don't expect anyone that hasn't shown up yet in a (Disney-Produced) Marvel movie, especially not any characters Fox owns the rights to (Deadpool, Skrull, DOOM, etc).

Honestly besides Raccoon, the only two I have hope for are Shuma and Sentinel. Sentinel because he's an MvC icon who got into MvC3 through force of fan appeal alone, and Shuma because Capcom really, really likes Shuma.

Marvel have said X-Men and Fantastic Four characters are available, they aren't tied to any mandate for to push film characters and "X-Men fans will be happy".

We're probably going to see Wolvie and Mag-Fuckin'-Neto at least. Way too much legacy on those characters to be dropped. Also Marvel and Fox are apparently on better terms regarding films (Especially since X-Men Apocalypse flopped hard) and Fox may do a deal to produce MCU films as early as next year.

Incidentally, when MvC3 was announced, they also promised some brilliantly written story mode. All we got was fighting about 7 random teams, Galactus out of fuckin' nowhere and pointless endings that only served as excuse for cameos.


I'm expecting the game to just be a big ass commercial for both companies and it's well known that Capcom's dev teams aren't the most cooperative so I doubt we'll see any particularly interesting characters from either side.

We know Inafune's western projects fucked up, especially with Grimm regarding Bionic Commando, but how else are they uncooperative? Has there been word of difficulty between Capcom and Marvel?

We'll see because apparently they were cooperative during MvC3 and they did a lot of trade offs. They did an office poll of what each side wanted from the other so Marvel did a top 10 Capcom characters and Capcom did a top 10 Marvel characters

Capcom wanted a "Wacky" character because at the time they weren't allowed to do Shuma (At that time. Marvel came around later) and Marvel suggested M.O.D.O.K. Meanwhile Marvel were the ones who really wanted Wright in the game and were shocked Capcom didn't have him in the initial roster they wanted (He was originally slated as DLC before Ultimate came out). Marvel did get the top of their request list in Vanilla (Arthur)

The only one they really fought over was Phoenix/Dark Phoenix where Marvel straight up said no (Because she was killed off in a massive storyline recently) and Capcom's devs believed the concept was so good they made her anyway and then showed her at a meeting. It escalated to a meeting with the editorial board at Marvel and the current writer of X-Men then including who killed her off (I think it was Bendis) who saw the gameplay video and immediately gave them special permission because it was "Awesome" and they loved the Dark Phoenix transformation idea.

This time the only difference is that Marvel approached Capcom to do it instead of Capcom licensing it and it's a "long term deal" according to Marvel. So how that shakes up the creative side will be interesting. Especially without the pressure of losing a licence

The difficulty is in Capcom's several dev teams themselves. I recall reading this on MMCafe ages ago regarding the development of TvC - they wanted to have characters from Monster Hunter and Sengoku Basara but their "colleagues" did not authorize it.


I still remember Killian's bullshit about characters that couldn't be added. Nemesis would affect the rating, Ghost Rider and Iron Fist were "punchy dudes", Wright couldn't be transferred into a fighting game, Strider couldn't added because copyright etc etc. Fast forward 6 months lo and behold, none of that shit matters anymore.


Well, I'm gonna reveal my greater autism power level and say the simple fact they let some Udon hack do the art for the re-release instead of using the original (or let one of their artists do it) was reason enough to not even bother with the game (I was already miffed by what they did with 3SO by changing the art, music and how system direction worked).
That and I was rather fannyflustered that Huitzil, Donovan and Pyron weren't in Vampire Savior because 'muh arcade fidelity'. Oh well, I have the collection for PS2 anyway…

Capcom and Marvel have to ask are they worth supporting at this point because the 360 was officially declared EOL earlier this year and the PS3 is approaching the end of its cycle.

Best you will get is likely MvC Origins and MvC2 going back compat on Xbone and reactivated in that store but everything else is fugged.

Recently we had that NESICA dump from /1cc/ where a bunch of fighting games and other arcade games were dumped. With this, we can finally play games like Arcana Heart 3 Love Max Six Stars!!!!!! and Persona 4 Arena U2 on PC. No one outside of foreign arcades could play Six Stars and P4U2 wasn't available on PC. There are other games like Deamon Bride and some of the older Blazblue versions. Some anons are trying to get CF arcade version rip.

All are possible, but I don't expect all of them back. In part due to the fact that a few of the characters with movies and shows will just edge them out. Shuma and Rocket have the best chance of returning, as Shuma could be slated for Dr. Strange 2 or 3. Considering Marvel did make a character trade deal with Fox over Deadpool, they're relationship there could be good enough to get him back in. And, honestly, Deadpool still makes Marvel tons of money despite them not owning the film rights.

I'm curious if Tron Bonne has any chance of coming back. She's gotten to be in the last two and even stuff like Namco x Capcom and Project X Zone. She was part of my team in UMvC3, and I kinda got used to seeing her in crossovers. But, while there was a slim chance of MML3 while MvC3 was in development, there is NO chance now. So I got the feeling she'd be dropped.

both are good ports outside the netcode and fun games. UNIEL's netcode is slight better than Melty's. I'd say just wait for revelator and then get UNIEL/Melty when they go on sale next

Thing is, I wouldn't describe him as more than 'competent'. He has a very solid grasp of anatomy and proportion but I feel his work lacks a bit more dynamic. And for DS in particular, I think stylized depictions favor the characters more but I'm very biased given Nightwarriors is my favorite in the series (and all-time favorite fighter alongside Soulcalibur for the DC) and the art in that game is all over the place.
But to each their own.

Granted 36 characters like Vanilla MvC3 would also be considered "Huge" and considering we know this is Marvel's deal this time around and the big push to "Games as a service" we're gonna see a lot of DLC and support for this versus the MvC3 clusterfuck (Way better engine to do it with as well because any studio can just hit the ground running with Unreal 4. Though we still don't know who the developer is yet. I can only imagine the shitstorm if it's Capcom Vancouver)

Not sure you could say any character about the voice acting though. The current trailer seemed Placeholder as X had no voice and seems no one has been cast for him yet (X looked ridiculously early as well). They did have Kyle Hebert as Ryu, Eric Loomis as Iron Man (Same guy from MvC3 and Avengers EMH) and Grey Diselle as Captain Marvel in the current trailer though so maybe they are just starting to record now (And Mr. Douglas can expect a call soon or is just playing with people).

Will be interesting to see who gets revealed. Would be cool if they did two completely new to the series characters.

People loved it, the characters were noticeable, and the game was just one netcode and one balance patch away from being great. And with a roster that big, there might be room for some of my favourites like Arthur and Ammy.

I kinda expected a smaller roster to begin with due to being a 2v2 game, so if anything, I'd expect anywhere from 20-30 characters. And as much as I'd want Wesker back, I never really expected him to come back since he hasn't actually been in a game since RE5. I would have expected them to go with a new set of Resident Evil characters entirely, along the lines of Leon, Ada, and Jake, but after seeing how lazy they were with Ryu, we may see a lot more carryover from 3 to I than I would've thought.


If they're saying a huge roster right off the bat, then all bets are really going to be off at this point. "Games as a service' would make me think this would have a smaller initial roster, much like SFV, but who knows how this will go.

I think it was the more pleasant surprise out of this (other than it's a fully multiplatform game. AoF 3 was pretty interesting. It felt more like a 3D fighter with the OTG attacks, juggle combos and universal mids. Not to mention the gauge that restricted special move usage, so it was much more hand to hand as well. The Desperation moves did absolutely BULLSHIT damage though, like 70 percent of your health gone, it was crazy. A stain on an otherwise pretty great game.

When's the Athena ARPG?
That shit's got so much potential. Greek mythology theme, Okami-tier colorful and comfy visuals, mermaid form and Pegasus mount for fun, non-sluggish air/underwater action, Ni-Oh type KUHRAAZEEE action, assorted weapons and armor just like the original game, stat investment reflecting on Athena's appearance (chubby or toned) etc etc.

Fighters are fighters, as far as I'm concerned. Not many artstyles put me off a game unless they're just amateurish. I don't really understand people who are put off by something like that.

If Rumble Roses count, I love it. There aren't enough wrestling games with girls.

As much as a lot of US would play it, if you worry about the FGC in general, they're weird. There are people who straight up didn't want to mess with Skullgirls just because it was all girls, and some anime fighters and things like DOA are looked down on a bit extra for it. So, get like one or two good male characters in there, just for those people. It doesn't have to be gender balanced, but some people really just prefer male characters for any number of reasons.

Yes, I prefer playing as manly characters like Ralf and Clark from KoF. I don't understand the appeal of playing as little girl characters outside of novelty. Just being honest.

Polish the gameplay first. Gameplay is the most relevant aspect of any game, and in fighting games, doubly so.
After that, design the characters based on archetypes, and add a twist. Not like Skullgirls, as in "This character is a ninja/robot/nurse/scientist AT THE SAME TIME!", more like "I want a tall, big-breasted judoka, because the extra mass will help her throwing people", or "I want a delinquent zoner throwing knives at you and using weapons to extend her range".

We've had some all female fighters over the years, such as SNK Gal's Fighters, and Skullgirls, but getting an audience for these games is difficult mostly because it can alienate normalfags, and weebs might not see your art style as anime enough. What is your art style like anyway, user? Maybe you could draw one of your characters, or an established fighting game character, to give us an idea of what your game would look like.

Do what Senran Kagura 2 does: An almost complete female roster with the sole male character being the joke character.

3D Engine is also already ready for the initial prototype except for fighting-game-specific code, which will take a week of programming at most to kickstart. So I'm actually not too far off from having a game build up and running with a single fighter
My art style is very anime-esque. Something along the lines of pic related (design for a different endeavor that I scrapped)
My 2D art style translates pretty directly into my 3D modeling.
I'm more an engineer than an artist, but I've tried to develop just enough drawing skill to get the job done.


Definitely want to avoid that. Probably some softer grunts here and there, but much softer, nuanced, and to an extent randomized (whether to play back or not when an animation plays, or which voice to play back when an animation plays), and pretty much no actual voice lines except maybe for taunts. There's a lot to worry about before the voices, tho.
The general rule in sound effects, is if they aren't noticed, you did a good job.

To be honest I'd imagine that MVCI is going to be a sort of spinoff title in which it starts with a character roster smaller than MVC3, then expands over time with character packs to ultimately fill a roster much, much larger. It's Disney we're talking about, after all, and they already have Disney Infinity to rake in the shekels. It'd make sense if they wanted to broaden that kind of market.

Disney Infinity has actually been dead for a while now. The toy to game market is changing up so much that Skylanders might be dead or at least taking a break.

But if Marvel and Capcom are smart about this, they could keep MvCI going for a few years easily. Maybe even use it to push some collectibles and toys like KI does.

I know you didn't ask for advice but I'm dropping some on you anyways. You tried and you at least showed your art, so that's more than what other people can say. Draw with single and confident strokes. Finish your drawings and don't hide things that you're weaker at. You don't really have a style right now because styles are artistic decisions; you don't seem to really have a choice in how you draw things yet. Can you draw this from a different perspective or with a different pose? If you can't, then your 3D models might look off because you can't imagine forms in space yet. If you want to get the job done for now, just use a lot of reference. Keep trying user, you'll get there one day.

The question is a matter of how far they're willing to go to break even. If they do go the route that I described, will characters have smaller movesets a la Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, or will they be more fleshed out?

Hiding the character design/3D model for what I'm working on right now is more of a "maybe this is when I should start worrying about copyright" sort of thing.

The criticism of my 2D art and style is valid, but I've practiced 3D modeling enough over the past few years that I've developed a strong enough sense of perspective to get the models in reasonably good shape, even if I haven't practiced my 2D art enough to translate that visual perception onto paper very well.
Fortunately, in my case, the 3D model is the end-product that players will see, with the 2D chicken-scratch merely a means to that end.

Aesthetics are nice, and how a character is designed is very important to a fighting game; but having a system to do all that in first should be a bigger concern in my mind. For someone that loves Marvel games he ought to realise how stupid it is having only SFxT tags in Marvel Infinite.
I personally think they should have tandem combos like HFTF so that way there's more synergy than just being a matchup softener/combo extender. Being a combo extender would be redundant for Marvel since the majority of them have the same path, unlike SFxT.

If you can't get the plexi made specifically buy someone like Tek innovations, then I guess you are stuck with the sticker route. I bought a Venom, which is the UK version of the mayflash, and that came with a plexi, so perhaps looking for the Venom layout might help.

We already talked about how some people in the FGC are just weird about a game like Skullgirls. It's a tough crowd because half of it freaks out if a game is too sexy or is mostly girls, and the other half will freak out if a game isn't sexy enough or has no girls.

People want to be part of whatever is seen as most popular, even if is probably absolutely right. It extra sucks though because then the health of other fighters is tied to these mainstays. If SF, Tekken and MK all have bad games (which has happened in the past) other fighters suffer. Because those are the fighters people go to first, and only if those go well will they move on to other, less established games.

Despite it's flaws, do you guys think that SFIV just came out of the gate way better than SFV did? I think it helped that IV felt very finished and polished when it came out, they even had time for useless shit like bonus rounds, if I recall. People were understandably pissed when they couldn't just DLC upgrade to Super, but that smoothed out after the other updates were dlc, but even if you were left with just vanilla SFIV, I think you could have a lot more fun with friends than with SFV even with all the season 1 content.

It might be them designing gameplay from Capcom mother base though. We still don't know the developer. There was rumors during the week before reveal it may have been Team Ninja but that isn't the case. So it's either Eighting again or potentially Capcom Vancouver (Which isn't so bad if they are following directions from people who know better)

Unreal 4 is a good choice though since if one dev team drops from the project, another can hit the ground running with it (And I believe that was the plan with SF V anyway, since Dimps will inevitably move on as they are a work for hire studio that can't keep fucking around on the same title for five years)

I think the more pragmatic way to say it is that 2v2 is way easier to balance. SFxTekken was shit but the 2013 1.08 update was really well balanced with a lot of viable characters as was Tekken Tag 2.

If Marvel's planning very long term support for years and the roster starts getting huge past the 50 character mark. Then it's way easier to keep it balanced if it's 2v2. KOF 2002 was one of the most balanced games in that series despite being nearly Mugen tier of re-used assets while Marvel 2 was a completely glorious shitshow rescued from the ashes of Darkstalkers 4 that was rushed out to meet a licencing deadline.

I loved UMvC3 but I can understand where Capcom's coming from scaling it back because I could only imagine what UMvC3 would have been like if the oiginal plan of Ultimate having 56 characters happened (Before it was rushed out due to a licencing deadline too). Niitsuma and Seth Killian's solution to it was "Make every character OP as fuck and add an OP comeback mechanic". Which was great but you can see the UMvC3 meta now is all about trying to OP the shit out of everyone else. It's mahvel and its high stakes but the game hit it's inevitable conclusion, really.

Zangief and T.Hawk were pretty high in Ultra IV. Nina and Zangief were fairly high in SFxT. In Killer Instinct Hisako is considered the only S+ character in the game by the developers themselves (Just has a super high execution barrier and your reads need to be exceptional to use her effectively)

This is something I legitimately hate about Lab Zero. Aside from trying to drum up more funds the actual character vote was retarded. It's clear they had characters they actually wanted to work on and I'd have taken any of the developer favorites than the two characters that got voted in. Eliza lost what would have made her really unique and Sekhmet isn't all that great. Beowulf got the second vote because the waifu wars on the forums basically made it so nobody wanted the other top picks because their fans were cancerous.

At the very least the characters the devs need to start telling a canon story would have also been great additions to the roster and give the game a boss that isn't a broken, slapdash, piece of shit.

Maybe after indivisible they can go back and give me a better reason to put time into Skullgirls. As it is I can't play it more than casually because none of the characters really excite me like Faust or Zappa do in Guilty Gear.

Vote-wise I was always pushing for Black Dahlia, or the longshot options of Ileum. Nothing quite like a murder granny or a monster mom to round out the cast. I think if the vote had somehow happened after Squigly's storymode, it would have gotten Marie a lot of votes. When the game opens up and she's throwing half a building around, it was the first thing to really establish what a Skullgirl can do.

I disagree. A direct sequel is an entirely new game. People would expect new sprites, new arts, new animations, new mechanics… SG doesn't need that. The only thing the game needs is more characters.

That's why I'm more into a 3rd Encore than a sequel. What Lab0 needs is a publsher that accepts to give them money to do regular updates on pretty much the same rhythm that what we had during Encore; 3-5 months per characters and a pack, including 5-6 chars per year, just like any season passes in KI, SFV and, probably MvCi.

They can skip that, since the game's on PS4, already. GGXX got many versions and while some of them were only on PS2/Xbox/Wii, others like +R were exclusive to PS3/360.

And yeah, Ileum is great. Marie would be awesome, too. But fuck, Scytanna could pick a dead body and use it to hit the fuck out of your opponent. How cool is that?

Something similar worked for Carmine in UNiEL. Like anything from a prototype it wouldn't be exactly as pitched and I'm aware that Mike had concerns for how all those new sprites would impact the engine and hardware.

If there is one character I really wanted in the game, that I thought would have done some positive things for the game overall. Aside from the three canon story mode characters it was Scythana. The bodies thing is so under utilized in the current skullgirls meta, nobody uses Valentine's level 4 because it's a waste of meter in 99% of situations. I want to see more uses for the persistant bodies and if that means using them as clubs, I'm all for that. Marie had something useful to do with them too and that's one of the reasons I want her. It would encourage the devs to retool their story mode and focus more on teams than 1v1.

I think part of what stops skullgirls from feeling like guilty gear is combo structure. I'm not the best at explaining what I mean because I haven't read as deeply into these games as other; but when I play guilty gear I can have shorter, unoptimized combos and play a character that has some variation in character movesets. Maybe I'm approaching skullgirls wrong but most of the roster seems built around L > M > H loops, with their specials following suit and supers being the combo ender.

With Guilty Gear I don't get that feeling because the game lacks the button strength skeleton for the most part. When I play and watch Guilty Gear I find that specials are the ender for most combos and aside from Gattlings, there is more freedom in how you execute a combo (part of this is done through FRC points in moves)

For the two Skullgirls characters who are said to have GG inspired mechanics (Squigly and Robo) I really do get that feeling of having some freedom with my specials at the very least. In particular I'm still trying to better incorporate Robo's heads into my gameplay because if I have enough breathing room I can break up my opponents advances with sell timed mines or heat seeking heads. That type of area control feels very good, but not as cheap as Peacock.

I guess what I love about Zappa and Faust though is their randomness. Zappa's ghosts and Faust's items are fun because they create a second type of game which is "how do I adapt my playstyle now?". With Zappa each ghost changes how I fight, Do I rush in with the sword and try and farm up orbs? Do I play partial zoner with the three stooges and harass my opponent? Do I try and trap my opponent with the dog and rack up as much damage? And it's all in this quest to become the most broken character in the game.
Faust on the other hand has his items which I like to use excessively because all it takes is one second to confirm what I threw out and then it's about trying to position myself so that I can maximize the item. (My favorite are the parachuting mini characters and the meteor shower)

Skullgirls needs to expand their roster and be more open to introducing gimmicks and unique resources to characters so that it can stop feeling so samey. I think they are on the right track looking at the IGG characters but seeing the execution of the characters we got I think there is a lot left to be desired. I don't think I've seen a lot of beowulfs utilizing hype that much, and Sekhmet is still just a combo extender and I feel like she needs a rework. It feels like she needed to be more like Valhenhyne's wolf form

I have Val/Robo as a team. On a lot of cases, it's super useful, because it gives me back my assist. And Val NEEDS assist in her neutral game. Badly. That's why she's a good point character.

It shouldn't feel like it. At all. SG is in the Versus subgenre, invented by the Marvel VS series. It's not an airdasher, neither a 1v1 game. Character's combo structure should be always simplified to LMH Launcher, because it's what a VS game does.
The emphasis of the game isn't on the character but on the entire team. The assists, the DHCs, the Red Life system… You have to learn how works the synergy between your characters in your team to make it work.

Every game should feel different. Even if a lot of SG chars feels like characters from other games, the game they are in makes them play wildly different than their sources.

The only fact we know for sure is that since May SFV has sold less than 100K copies, and I'm pretty sure there have been some heavy sales between then and now. Which still leaves a lot of people owning it and playing it, but pretty much just the people who bought it early on.

Also Skullgirls has been available on 5 platforms instead of just 2, so I can imagine a lot of people own it.

I agree but what I am talking about is why most SG characters won't feel like a GG character. Even Squigly who is closes to Johnny doesn't feel like him because being a stance character in SG doesn't mean the same thing as it is in GG. The base system doesn't facilitate the kind of "feel" that a GG game gives to it's characters which was the whole point of those last paragraphs. Both in terms of character movesets having multiple styles, and combos having more cut-off points and branching paths, that is what I want from future skullgirls characters which is already present in Guilty Gear and present in a couple SG characters. Even the idea of randomness goes against a VS game because you need a reliable means of securing your combos and resets.

It also doesn't have to effect the whole roster because even GG has their shotos and more straightforward characters. But SG needs something like blood packs, ghost orbs, or special meters. I know that's still in the minority of VS character designs (only MvC3 Frank West, Hurricane Polymar, andPheonix Wright come to mind when I think of characters with unique resources) but it still is something lacking from the current game even for a VS derived one. Like why is Sekhmet not on her own meter and instead a drain on your super meter? Yeah they gave her hyper armor to compensate but that all felt like cost cutting measures. Especially having been on the forums at the time and hearing about how they had to pare down some of Sekhmets ideas because of budget and time.

What I want more from skullgirls is characters that aren't restricted to LMH combos or at least characters that have more options to their playstyles. I would also like to see more character specific resources but that is already confirmed provided L0 can follow through with adding new characters in the future.

No teams, and Robo is the character that gives me the best number of options while allowing me to not have to use a team. How can you see it as a "problem"? Solo vs Solo is indeed a thing in SG, thanks to its Ratio system, but it's not at all where the heart and true form of the game is. Why this game was made, in fact.
The direct feel you have in a game comes directly with the characters. It's the characters that will show you the best how the game is played or how the game feels.
I'm a big fan of Robo aswell and I play her a lot as solo Robo on Beta. I can feel that this isn't her forte. I can feel that she was designed to have solid zoning assists while being helped by assist who have better reversal options while she's on point. Characters are all designed with "something missing", making the team aspect central.
Unlike GG or even KI, wen, just like SG, the characters feels all different from each other, they can all do some things on teir own, depending the matchups. Especially in GG, since some characters who are "low tier" can have pretty good matchups against top tiers.
It's not like you're totally wrong to play Solo v Solo. Since you can, it'll be dumb to say otherwise. But the game was always meant to be team-based, heavily axed on short combos and resets. You can't pick a game and hoping it'll have what you love from other games. You pick a game and you have to deal with what the game gives you.
GG is a great series. Xrd Rev is a beautiful game, even tho some OGs doesn't like the new pace. You shouldn't expect other series to feel or play like GG. Changing the way how combo works in a game that heavy on launchers and LMH combos like SG, even on specific characters, will probably not feel right on a game this much axed on team-based strategies.

Because the statement I was replying too was referencing mechanics that are exclusive to teams. Hence my "problem" is that all the stuff you mentioned doesn't apply to me. I get used to how other people use those but I don't use them myself.

But that's not anything I said. I usually play solo vs three. I like only having to worry about one character. I would rather not have to bother with using assist calls myself and SG at least gives me the option to play that way. Sure it's an uphill battle and I'm screwing myself out of a lot of mechanical options but it's what I choose and I don't complain. All I'm saying is that I don't have to worry about team synergies, but on the other hand I recognize that characters aren't designed to be played solo and I picked the most rounded of the cast to fill that void. That's it. Your observations on Robo are correct but I only care about solo options.

Again that is not what I am saying. The original comment I replied to was about a "zappa-like character in SG" and how Samson would be that option and all my words have been about how I don't think the current iteration of Skullgirls will deliver on that concept for broad system reasons, as well as individual design philosophies for characters. What makes zappa is his ghosts and how they change his playstyle depending on who is equipped. Sure it only changes how 1-2 buttons work but that's significant enough to make him a different character for each ghost.

Right now the only characters who really feel like they have some GG elements in their design are Squigly because of her a-typical LMH stance specials (they do not follow the logic of weak > Medium > heavy and instead are things like One inch punch > Center stage > Scorpion chain) and Robo fortune with her heads resources and some movement options. These are good and off the top of my head future characters might include things like Ammo counters, countdowns, being able to use bodies in different ways, and objects they can set on the field to change movement options. This is more of what I want.

And to reiterate, if the game does not change the LMH combos (and it's in their rights not to cater to my very specific desire) than all I would like to see are either more individual character options and more resource driven characters because right now, the resource characters are the ones I play the most of.

The team oriented nature of the game does make me question why the game isn't restricted to team sizes of 2 or 3 and just forgoe the solo option because the game doesn't provide solos with any benefits besides the health/damage ratio. When I played TvC I thought that characters were good enough to stand on their own and a 1v1 TvC would have also been good.

But there are other people who play solo in the tourney setting so I haven't lost hope that the idea can work, just that I'm also likely to never win anything higher than locals because of the restrictions on the concept

Don't forget, you can have some life back when you're solo against team. You can have 2 third of your life back wen you snap your opponent.

Some characters like Eliza, Ms. Fortune or Cerebella are way more solid on Solo than the rest of the cast. Because they have less "something missing" than the rest of the cast. So, usually, the rare persons that risks going through tourneys with Solos tends to pick them, outside anyone else.

Honestly, I think the Ratio system let you pick Solo, just because Mike Z wanted to show what a "good Ratio system" is for him and how he can be balanced, unlike CVS2. Don't forget that the game was released with 8 characters at first. Solos is still way more logical to let in a less than 20 chars cast than on more. You can obviously pick 3 characters directly on MvC3 vanilla, since the game had 38 chars at launch.

The health and damage factors are fine but I'd at least like something to address the lack of assists. Maybe an additional, on command, burst or something like. But I believe the idea has already been shot down so *shrug*.

Yeah that's been my observation as well. Some characters are more self reliant or rounded than others. Peacock can also sit on that list in my opinion.

Solos already got a LOT of buffs from the first time they were introduced. The "life back" thing was a recent thing, for example.

I don't know how you do. During our exchanges, I've played 2 hours with my friends and even if Beta Robo got way more tools to deal with neutral, it's still hard for me to get in and do my things. Seriously, I love the character and she's the main reason I wanna be good at this game. But it's super hard.

For a guy who plays casuals with my friends I do alright. Online I rarely win but 2 parts of being a more casual player and me still ingraining her BnB's into my head. Getting in is also a pain because she lacks an air dash and not having a strictly horizontal entry vector can cause problems.

'd been going to my locals for a couple of months and whenever I did I just stuck to Solo Ms. Fortune and Robo has been a recent experiment. But I swallow a lot of salt at locals because most of the regulars are also the same faces that show up to tournaments. They give great advice though.
