Indie Games

Does anyone else have this weird addiction to indie games while also being unable to enjoy AAA titles?
I just want a game where the devs focused on the gameplay and not the graphixxx for fuck sake.
On a related note that fat jew of Edmund confirmed Afterbirth + to be released somewhere in the next 4 weeks, anyone else hyped?

I understand. Most AAA games can't afford to take risks so a lot of them fall into a very samey cinematic cover shooter feel or open world crafting feel. Indie games don't have the pressures of deadlines or publishers or a mass market to appeal to so they have the ability to try a lot of things with varying artstyles.

On the otherhand, your image has overrated schlock Limbo and Fez so I have reason to believe you might just be dumb. Also no one says 'graphixxx'.

Some of my favorite games were independently developed but that picture has about 3 good games and 7 trash ones

I grabbed that on the internet because i'm on mobile.
Don't judge, Holla Forums makes me sleep better

I agree, pic related is one of my current favourites and this could never be born under a triple A dev only because of the sheer amount of novelty it brought.

I want to try more indie games but I tend to gravitate towards retro, 6th gen and below, yes I consider 6th gen retro. It's just more fun collecting obscure retro games and seeing what ideas and innovations people developers had in the past. It's crazy how many hidden gems with crazy ideas you find on these old machines.

It's hard for me to get over how indie games try to hide their cheapness by going for a "retro" art style. It's obvious that they do it out of necessity, not for artistic reasons. I'm just tired of it.

Indies pull the same shit AAA does

I feel like people here are too inclined to just write off indie games as a whole because of Sturgeon's Law being very apparent and certain titles becoming way overrated. The arcade mindset is strong among a lot of indie titles, which is why I'm more inclined to try them out rather than AAA.

However, there is a problem with lack of innovation in the indie scene. Even the best devs are mostly content with just remaking acclaimed games with just one or two token new elements in the mix.

Did you ever get that MEGA link with all the necessary to run Garage: Bad Dream Adventure?
Now that is some uncommon gem.
Also check Under The Skin, it's a PS2 game that feels a bit like Katamari, fun, short and creative.

What's "retro" about Darkest Dungeon? It's my understand that it's all hand-drawn

Not every independent group is artistically incompetent

I didn't think such a thing existed

*it's my understanding

I dislike that too.
I actually unironically tried pic related before the memes about it came out, i couldn't finish it out of boredom.

Then i guess the stuff sitting in my HDD is a 300mb stash of ferret porn :^)

Obviously being 2d is retro, if it isn't 3d with complex shaders and lighting then it's old outdated shit.

If i can advocate for the game it's probably the last "actually turn based" rpg that came out in a long time.

I don't even know what that is, but it looks like shit.

I can't tell if you're joking

Put it on the vola either way because I'm in the market for both

It's the most noodle limbs you will ever see in an indieshit

Jesus fucking christ, he's just riding this all the way to the bank. It's not even like I can appreciate him milking idiots like FNAF guy, since Edmund is kind of a dick as far as I've been able to put together.
Also Enter the Gungeon is a more enjoyable experience than Binding of Isaac, same with Nuclear Throne

I don't mind games being retro and I don't care about whatever retarded reasoning people come up with to classify something as retro. To me a game is either good or not based on its own merits. The time a game came out or advances since have nothing to do with it. Anytime I hear "that game aged poorly" I want to kill the person saying it. I want to beat them to death with a commodore 64.

Joking. Read above.

I play indie games more out of necessity than anything. AAA games cost $60 and don't run well on my toaster. That being said, 2016 has been pretty good for indies. With only two AAA games I'm actually looking forward to next year, I'll probably be sticking to either my backlog or cheap indie games for the foreseeable future

It's not another game, its more DLC, and he's only made two games for BoI, the original and the "remaster"

NOT FOR LONG

You never know

Reminder that SJWs got self triggered over this game because the art atyle reminded them of the problematic 50s

Now that looks pretty good. What is that, I've seen it before I think.

It will be the last addition to the game and so he's releasing modding support with it.
Own both, they are fun but i still like TBoI the most, because you don't have the fun in breaking the game with hilarious item combo in those two.

Maybe tomorrow, i can't handle shit right now.
I'll make sure to post both here and in a separate thread if i do, so you have a way of noticing.

Cuphead

Thanks pal

Oh, it's still not out. Well I'm looking forward to it.

I know what you mean, but nowadays "indie" games feel like they're somewhere in between those two poles. The teams are larger and they aspire for their games to live up to AAA standards, resulting in a really shitty product.

I may regret this, but I'd really like a link to see what you're talking about.

i dont have anything against aaa games as a concept. they just really suck lately.
i think its sad that people will shit on low res sprites now, just because its a trend.

well, i imagine this mermaid boss helped piss some ugly person off.

But that's exactly why they should be shat on. Every other indie game does it. It's not a fun retro throwback anymore. It's just lazy/untalented developers.

if it were about the laziness we would have anons complaining about things that look like they were animated in flash but i never hear anyone say how cheap castle crashers or darkest dungeon looks. and we even sometimes have people pining for indie games to jump on a low poly 3d trend, nobody shoots that idea down.

I'd rather an indie have decent pixel art than shitty normal art.

Ok i'm gonna see if i can upload it to vola now, it's 1.8gb.
Does anyone know if there is a filesize limit?
It's gonna take a while, my connection is shit, i might just give up and make a MEGA link instead, which is gonna be more permanent anyway.

Fuck i deleted the bookmark for v's volafile.
Help?

You looking for this?

ok cool

TAKE THE FUCKING SANDWICH

I'll make a thread about it, hoping 14e098 notices.

...

Does it actually have loli pussy in it? If not I'm not bothering.

No it's alien cyberpunk mixed with sad themes about life, if i can recall correctly.

Speak about false advertising.
At least AAA games are honest about their contents.

I was asleep, thanks a ton OP

Yeah well about that…

Shit man, what kind of third world internet do you have? Don't sweat it if it's going to be a hassle

It's cool, it will actually take about two hours, it makes 5 minutes jumps every minute, it's down to 7:50.
I just hope you don't mind the wait.

Like I have anything to do on a Sunday

...

There is NOTHING wrong with Castle Crashers.

I tend to stay away from Indie games, since the vast majority of them are mobile-tier shovelware or artsy-fartsy 2deep4u pixelshit. If I hear a lot of good things about one, I might check it out, but I'll never actively browse a catalog of indie games to try them myself.

I find AA to be a good middle-ground, since they are allowed to experiment more due to their smaller budgets and lower expectations… yet they tend to have enough oversight and accountability to investors to keep them from going too off the rails. Usually they're found on portable consoles. This gen has kind of been shit, but last gen with the DS and PSP was a fucking golden era.

It's too short and mechanically shallow.

It was originally a flash game, bro. Yes, there were flash games with much greater depth, but it is definitely an arcade game, not an action/adventure RPG type game. For what it is, it is "good," not "great," but definitely good.

That is legitimately one of the only games on the Xbox One that I was interested in, and it's coming to Steam.

hirez must be pumping some money into bullshit astroturfing like whoa

whats so cute about all the current shitty Holla Forums threads and the reddit threads and "wahhh we came out first" is that its so fucking obvious that its being pushed harder than crack on the black community

I really liked smite and so i got the "founders pack" for paladins (yea yea kek it up) and enjoyed it at first…

…then they re-engineered every fucking class to mimic or rip off overwatch

dont believe the moronic echo chamber cacophony of "we had designed it first" when you can literally search their forums and hear people that SUPPORTED THE BUY IN BETA COMPLAINING THAT THEYRE MAKING IT IDENTICAL TO OVERWATCH

this is on top of their shitbird leadership hating the game itself and telling the devs to make it more like overwatch, before those motherfuckers went back to playing overwatch

like holy shit, read their company reviews on indeed

its a shit hole with horrible leadership, this is coming from someone who played both paladins and smite in the betas and has played shit tons of matches in both

please tell me Holla Forums isnt so fucking stupid that they would suck the cock of someone because they didn't have to pay for it

just fucking play tf2 or overwatch, let this shit die so they can learn not to churn out cookie cutter lackluster shit then kill it-didn't you learn from hirez prior?

I like castle crashers I'm just saying it's not a good example of what the faggoty op said he wants in a game.

You must be in the wrong thread

Almost done.
Had to use the internet so it slowed down, the timer counts 45 minutes left

It's Done!

Thanks pal

I have been enjoying a lot of indie games recently. The Swapper was a pretty good one I finished recently. I'd say it's worth a play through. The amount of work they put into the claymation graphics didn't seem worth it though.

Ori and the Blind Forest was also fun. All the mechanics felt pretty good and it was difficult enough that it didn't get boring. Misty Woods was cool as shit.
Also, the spikes in Sorrow Pass look exactly like kidney stones under a microscope

It certainly wasn't worth the effort to spend that much time making detailed clay art assets and then drowning the screen in bloom. If you liked The Swapper I'd recommend The Talos Principle, very similar, although not an indie.

Thank you, user!

Thing about indies is the cult of personality.
In your OP there is Fez, and we all know about Phil Fish.
There is also Braid, and everybody knows how much of a cunt Jonathan Blow is despite making very few games.
Limbo devs keep riding the same unoriginal idea and this time they don't even have spiders.
I can't say anything bad about Supergiant aside from bastion running at 45 fps. It doesn't hinder it much though.
Edmund Mcmillen is probably my favorite indie dev since he just wants to make videogames, when he does they are fun and no bullshit. I still like the original BoI design better than pixelshit

Ever since I learned indies have their own cliques and can be even dirtier than AAA faggots I lost comfort and research every dev before bying games. It's a shame.

As a guy who's making a cheap 2D indie game, I just want you to know we loathe it too. I'd prefer to make a 3D game any day of the week, but artists demand five thousand times more money than basically everyone else.

Fortunately, AI will eventually be able to make our art assets for us and maybe even be able to help with programming.

no shit other human beings also like indieshit, or else nobody would be making any profit from them you fucking retard

It is not even about the indie aspect for me, I just cannot look at modern/most 3D games and take them seriously, they all look the same, but indie games can get away with doing some really weird shit.

They moved the release date back though, I wondered why I haven't heard about it for a while. Instead of this year it will be mid 2017

general rule of thumb is 𝑚𝑜𝑠𝑡 indie games are utter crap. Then there is the rare exception like La-Mulana or Hotline Miami. As shit AAA titles can be they still are better then 𝑚𝑜𝑠𝑡 indie games,

My favorite type of game is a heavily strategic (borderline autistic) builder with a decent aesthetic. Since this is a genre that literally DOES NOT EXIST in the AAA world, as it's not casual enough for most players, indie games are pretty much all I have for it.

Dwarf Fortress
Rimworld
Kerbal Space Program
Factorio
Minecraft (from a old version back when it still was an indie game)
And at this point, SimCity4 was like an A game that became an indie game, seeing how it's 90% modded

That's the general rule of thumb for every form of art or media. Sturgeon's Law.

Pretty shit tbh. You should stick to AA or at least non-Western indie.
