It started because the original game was never written with a sequel in mind (It was meant to be Square's last game), so Square decided to make the second game have an unrelated story instead of shoehorning in a sequel to a story never meant to have one.

And it's funny how a game like Dragon Quest Builders is completely different from DQ1, whit it is a direct sequel from, yet it has that classic feel and is a really good game. So Square Enix is still fully capable of making good games that take advantage of new tech and design elements but otherwise feel and play as their classic games but apparently they are too far up their own asses to CHOOSE to do so, at least when it comes to Final Fantasy and their other Square Soft properties.

These days, people just really don't want a turn-based RPG. They want to feel in control no matter how much fluff that "control" is they still want it.

If you really want to point blame for that you have to look at a whole generation of game players who were brought up on MMOs (World of Warcraft primarily) as their entry into an RPG type of game.

First, FF7 isn't even close to my favorite Final Fantasy game so I don't really care about the remake. Second, I have a copy of FF7 and I like it how it is so why would I buy it again? Finally, absolutely NO ONE wanted a "remake" of FF7. All they wanted was an HD version with that was other wise identical to the original version. They sure as hell didn't want what Square is doing with it, but it's current year Square so what are you going to do? It' not unexpected at this point.

My example about DQ Builders proves that people in the same company know how to appeal to their old fans while still keeping things fresh and are at least somewhat successful in doing so. On a site filled with weeaboo trap porn addicts that should be a compliment, alas I'm neither. 13 had the best weapon design (name something better than then the gunblade) the best character design and overall the best aesthetic of any previous game. 13-2 had subjectively the best (or at least darkest) story and objectively the best soundtrack. 13-3 might have been weak in the other departments but the timer gave it a sense of urgency and tension that eventually paid off. Now with 15 they try to appease all the complainers, offering a mix of turn based strategy and action, freedom and ticking clock (no timer but you need to wrap things up before sunset) and anons STILL want to complain because it's not giving them the same buzz FF8 gave them when they were twelve. 13 was amazing, 15 is breddy gud (so far) and you would know this if you liked vidya at least as much as you do shitposting.

Shiny and bloom as fuck as opposed to FF9's fantasy, FF7's gritty tech, FF6's steampunk before steampunk was a thing, and FF8's broad open landscape. FF13 was unfocused and bloated.

So they ended up staying afloat and going with the whole "last story of each setting" thing… until FFX, and then FF13: Armpit fetishist simulator happened.

They had to make back all the money they wasted making this game in some form or fashion. So they went with a modern setting so they could push shit like ramen and credit cards.
