I'm all for supporting local farming, but it would be a logistical nightmare to operate that way. The main reason for contracting huge corporations is being able to offload large scale logistics to them. It's much easier and cheaper to deal with a few companies which can reliably supply vast quantities of product in standardized packaging from a handful of distribution centers than it is to deal with tens of thousands of local suppliers.

Like I said, it's just logistics. You could technically do that, but it would require an unreasonable amount of manpower to coordinate and be subject to far more potential issues. Letting them choose their own provider just adds an additional layer of complexity where you have to find out what everybody wants, track that information, and constantly communicate changes to providers.
Even just processing applications from potential new providers, assessing their products/capabilities, and ensuring they remained in compliance with standards would be a huge ongoing task.

Much tastier, an it cooks sticky rice which you save costs by buying in a 25lb bag, or larger. Also, it will keep the rice warm and edible for 5 or so days if you make much more than you can eat so you will have warm sticky rice that you can add to a lunch meal and dinner meal. I often supplement all kids of soup with a massive spoon of rice.
if you buy a dedicated rice cooker you will end up eating much more rice. You can add brown rice to white rice, with beans of all sorts.

Then a couple cans of coconut milk, and a couple cans of diced tomatoes. Ginger and kohlrabi are nice too.
Brown some chicken breasts (or whatever part) in a pan and add it to the pot.

My family of 4 can eat that for a few days on rice. If it's low and not enough for a meal I just toss in another can of tomato.
I wouldn't suggest living off of beans and grains as a main protein staple as least, the protein just isn't bioavailable, they just make you fat, beans especially. White rice is actually one of the least fattening and inflammatory grains you could bother eating compared to brown rice since the shell is removed, it digests three times faster compared to wheat as well.

There are plenty of reasons why consumers would favor less nutritious, less flavorful, and often imported foods over local foods.
The most obvious reason that can't possibly be controlled for on the local level is availability.
First, there's this thing called winter and it affects every major agricultural region in the US. The modern diet, even the modern healthy diet, demands more food variety than any single region can provide year round. I like to dabble with seasonal cooking but a purely local winter diet is repetitive at best and fairly unpleasant at worst for most of the country. There's a reason our ancestors celebrated the arrival of spring to a degree that appears silly to modern eyes and much of that has to do with the return of variety in their diets. A diet where pickled vegetables are a significant portion of your nutritional intake sucks. A distributor who is willing to source their food globally (or even just nationally) is going to wipe the floor with local farmers like you for 2-5 months out of the year. They have the supply to meet demand and you don't, that gives them a huge income advantage that will be reinvested, leaving you in the dust.
Second, there are good years and bad years on every farm. Whether it's a lack of rain, an outbreak of disease among your livestock, or abnormal temperatures (freak frosts, heat waves), the output of a single region which fits any definition of "local" is going to vary significsntly year over year. When a particularly rainy summer results in widespread tomato blight, the national/global supplier will be the only game in town when even the "buy local" conscious consumer just wants that damn bruschetta in late summer that they've anticipating all year.

Then you have the problem of supplying foods that have traditionally always been purchased as a produced foodstuff. For example, most people living in urban areas have purchased bread from a baker, rsther than make their own, since the middle ages. Basic staples like bread, meat, oils, and liquid seasonings (garum for example) have always been produced in large quantities by middle nen between the farmer and tbe consumer. If a national/global operation can offer all of these prepared staples, plus slightly lower quality versions of your offerings, you're going to lose marketshare due to convenience alone. The "one stop shop" effect is huge.
