Gavin Williamson says Russia should ‘go away and shut up’
Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson has described relations with Russia as ‘exceptionally, exceptionally chilly’ in answer to a question over Russia.
When asked if the world was facing a new cold war, he responded saying: ‘Well let’s face it, relations ain’t good are they… It’s feeling exceptionally, exceptionally chilly.’
‘There is no doubt where this attack come from,’ he said. ‘It came from Russia.’
Asked whether he felt the UK and Russia were entering a new Cold War, the Defence Secretary said: ‘Let’s face it, relations ain’t good, are they?
‘Russia has in my view made a deliberate political decision in terms of attacking Britain. It’s often described as a cool war that we are entering – I would say it is feeling exceptionally chilly at the moment.’
Mr Williamson said it was ‘time for the whole country to unite’ behind the Prime Minister.
‘You see it in the House of Commons and you listen to members of Parliament from all parties on the backbenches. That is what they are wanting to see: Britain standing together against this great threat.’
He was speaking at Porton Down as he said that the ‘chemical threat does not just come from Russia’, during multimillion-pound investment in a new specialist centre.
After the nerve agent attack on ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter and the growing possibility of further attacks, British troops will also be vaccinated against anthrax, he said
‘If we doubted the threat Russia poses to our citizens,
we only have to look at the shocking example of their reckless attack in Salisbury,’ Mr Williamson said.

‘But we have world-class expertise at Defence Science Technology Laboratory (DSTL) Porton Down and today I can announce we will be strengthening this capability by investing £48m in a new Chemical Weapons Defence Centre to ensure we maintain our cutting edge in chemical analysis and defence.’
Experts based at DSTL in Wiltshire were tasked with analysing the nerve agent used to poison Mr Skripal and his daughter Yulia, and played a crucial role in linking the attack to Russia.
In light of what he described as a growing chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threat from a range of state actors, he will confirm that thousands of British troops who are held at high-readiness will be 'vaccinated against anthrax.
