You don't get a key yet - Early Access Demos have been updated for the backers who had access. The Demo has been updated to what is essentially the full game, but they still technically call it the demo so they can fill out any bugs or make any last revisions before sending the game out. Just restart Steam and you'll get the update, or check it for updates.

I'm going to need examples of what's wrong. Near as I can tell, they picked a simple story and did a good job of telling it with great visuals. Were you hoping for some shitty Mortal Kombat time travel story or something?

Oh, sorry, didn't realize this was bait until I re-read it.

I finally 100% the game, and above all else, one thing sticks out to me: I wish the snek mechanic was more fleshed out.
The concept of it is great, and I love it, the ability to trade spells for new ones. But there's only two spells that you can trade for, and neither of them are very good. Oh, what do I want, the spell that blows up everything on screen, or the spell that turns me into a tiny fish? Even for a character that's only there as a kickstarter tier, she feels like a complete afterthought. I would be perfectly happy with further delay if it meant giving the snek more attention, and better dances. Dances that actually had a significant effect on gameplay.

Also, some of the transformations barely get any attention at all. The spider form is used maybe once or twice which is sort of acceptable seeing as it's not even a spell you need to beat the game and her venom shot doesn't poison enemies, which I think is a huge letdown. And while they make enough use of the bat that it's not completely useless once you unlock the harpy, its special echo skill is used exactly once, in a single challenge room, that I beat before I even unlocked the skill. And worst of all, we don't even get succubus Shantae.
Saying this out loud, I find myself thinking of an alternative to make everybody happy: bat Shantae could have started with the special echo ability, and more than one room could have made use of it, and in exchange, the chest that had that skill would instead let her transform from a bat into her succubus form. It even makes sense thematically, since you find the echo ability in a haunted house area.

How is it?

Structurally, it's great. The levels are built well enough to incorporate the skills and transformations, and the secrets are all hidden well enough away that exploration is interesting and engaging. Combat is a little iffy; maybe I just need to improve, but some of the fights, particularly the bosses, are just a little bit bullshit. Maybe I was just spoiled by how the bosses in Pirate's Curse were easy enough that I didn't need to use the different weapons, but if you don't use your spells in this one, you're gonna get your ass handed to you. The Ammo Baron fight, for instance, is a special breed of bullshit, because he can surround himself with up to three layers of contact damage human shields that are nearly impossible to dodge.

The story was nice enough, but some of it didn't really mesh all that well. For what it is, it has a decent length, but the stretch goal levels really sort of stand out in the way they're introduced. "Okay Shantae, the next place you've gotta go is- hold the fucking phone, girl, you need to go over here now and solve some other problem!" Not a huge dealbreaker, but the pacing could have been a little better.

Aside from all that, the only real issue I had was with the use of transformations, as I mentioned before.All things considered, it just didn't use them to their full potential, with one-time gimmicks and abilities that just don't bring anything unique to the table. And the snake girl is basically useless, her presence is so insignificant.

Aside from all that, though? Fantastic, totally worth the wait. Plus it's getting all that sweet character DLC after its official release, so who knows, it might have even more replay value in the future.

Yeah, loving the game so far. It's interesting that while the first few felt like Metroidvanias, this one's got a bit more of a classic feel, what with the stage select and each world being somewhat self-contained.

The wizard is pretty well-hidden at the centre of the waterfall area. You'll need to have done the desert tower first, and use your new powers in a creative way…

To avoid wasting a LOT of time, make sure you've got the Lollipop before you do this.

Use the Mouse transformation to go inside the textures in the walls. There's a bunch of other treasures to find this way, too.

Top-right corner of the map, there's a tiny monkey-sized hole that seems impossible to reach by jumping (it is).

Go all the way to the left of the map, and you'll find a platform at about the same height. Change into the Bat to fly all the way across the map and you'll be at the exact right height to fit into the hole. Destroy the blocks there and you'll be able to enter the maze in the walls.

You'll then have to navigate through the various moving blocks to move from wall to wall, eventually reaching the point where the Wizard is hiding. (He initially appears as just a twinkle of light until you get very close.) Rather frustratingly, the Mouse Bite doesn't work inside the walls for some reason, so watch out for the enemies.

While we're talking about gameplay, did anyone figure out where the Waterfall powerup is?

Depends on which bit you're talking about.
MOST of Risky's stage requires Harpy + Git Gud; it helps a LOT if you have the Talon, because it stops all momentum if you use it in midair.

There is at least one set of obstacles that you can get through using the Bat.
There is another part - which I suspect is the bit you are at - which requires either INSANE Harpy skill level or the Monkey Bullet. Drop down to the wall below, bullet across, climb up a bit, bullet back, and then jump off the wall to safety.

Hope that helps.

BTW, has anyone figured out how to unlock Risky Mode? Or is it simply not in the game yet, and they just added her silhouette to be jerks? I've beaten it 100% now and she's still locked.

I don't think she's actually reachable with the bullet in that stage - no wall to launch off, it's all flat. You'd need to use Spider or Bat.
I did all my dance-shopping at Mermaid Falls, where she's a lot easier to reach.

He's ludicrously easy if you have Super Pike Ball or Scimitar. I found running away from him at the beginning of the stage MUCH harder than the actual boss fight.

Yeah, it's a lot more fun to obtain gems by actually going back through the levels while exploring. Once you have the harpy, a run through of Tassel Town's first area is a lot faster than using the jug.

Really, the jug is ideal for when you've ALMOST got enough for that thing you really want, and just need that couple of extra gems.

Fucking missing only one heart in main street and the last key in Tassel Town. I can't find them anywhere, this better not be like that one asshole heart squid in pirates curse that was hidden in a unique way.

I think the heart container you're looking for is in the burning town, in a small crawl space for monkeys, and the key is in the tower in a convoluted mouse maze puzzle.

The last key is in an INCREDIBLY well hidden place, so I'm not surprised it's giving you trouble. I was stuck on it forever. Spoilers below for when you're sick of pulling your hair out.

In the tower, near the end, right after the long set of platforms/chains you have to climb, there's a block. If you hit it with your hair, you can knock it down - keep hitting it, and you can knock it all the way to the bottom of that section.

Stand on it to be able to use your elephant on a previously unreachable statue head, and get into the area with the last key.

It drove me NUTS looking for it. I must've gone through the entire level five times.

I felt like a genius when I found that. Satisfying puzzles, for sure.

Do you need to complete the game after getting 100% to unlock something?

It's all just artwork and cheevos at this point. You get a piece of art for getting 100%, one for speedrunning the game, and one for speedrunning and getting 100%.

Just finished it, once with the "you lazy son of a bitch, get all the items"-ending and then 100%.
The games really good, tight controls (except for the Harpie) and it's nice to be able to skip already played sections with the warp dance.
But the escape after the last Boss can fuck right of. I know it's not that hard, but having to start over when you fall down is just annoying, especially if you don't know exactly what to comes next.

Other than that it's a good game, although extremely easy. I played Pirate's Curse just before and I missed the scaling damage some enemies did. With the half damage upgrade there is just no danger anymore, except for insta-death spikes and even that just sets you back a bit. Not to mention that Risky and the final boss are a joke if you have the infinite magic and the last stage of the bubble shield.
And I miss the dungeons. But I don't miss the overworld.

All in all it's good, fixes a lot of problems from the previous games but is just to easy. But I am glad I backed it and that it got made. Maybe the Risky Boots mode will be a bit harder.

Very much this. The sequence with the worm in the Tassel Town tower also killed me far too many times… and then there's this (see pic)

This pair of counter-clockwise moving bastards mashed me a whole bunch of times before I realized they can be passed without following their pattern.

Yeah, it was trivial with those upgrades. The boss design reminded me a little of the MCP from Tron.

Are the PC requirements really that steep? It does let you turn down the resolution in the settings, so if you have the demo it might be worth testing.
It's still bullshit that they cancelled the PS3 version, and the Vita version apparently doesn't support the Vita TV. I guess Sony REALLY wants people to buy PS4s.

Built my system in 2009, and my current video card is a used 1GB GTX 560 SE. Runs fine, but my problem is my Dual Shock 4 likes to lose connection every few seconds, which makes TIMED JUMPING PUZZLES REALLY FUCKING FUN.

Have you considered getting the DualShock XInput Wrapper and using a PS3 controller via USB? That's how I played the game, and it was great aside from the Xbox button prompts.

I assume it's coming a bit later, like how risky mode, the other special costumes and the other character modes are.

The Dual Shock 3 has shitty ergonomics, compared to the 4. The grips of the latter are a bit larger, which means that you don't have to curl your fingers quite as tightly, reducing fatigue and joint pain with prolonged use. Alas, once paired via bluetooth, the controller seems to hate a plain USB connection, and refuses to stay connected. Re-pairing it is a nightmare all its own. I'd probably use a 360 controller if all of mine hadn't been stolen.

Anyway, the disconnection thing seems to be pulse-like. InputMapper indicates that the signal response drops off, then comes back, in a regular rhythm, and changing settings within it, or changing the USB port the bluetooth 4.x dongle is in, does nothing to remedy it.

First time with one gallery key missing, second time with all keys, third time because I'm an idiot and forgot to talk with the mayor to get the final item.

That Tiara is useful. Free magic is pretty OP. Then again you don't really need it.

I still have to unlock two pictures. Does anybody know the requirements? I'm guessing bad end is one of them. Is the fourth one speedrunning?

I haven't tried it but if Hero mode is like Pirate Mode in Pirate's Curse, then you can get the speedrun endings with it.

It doesn't say you have to be a mouse the entire time.
