Game Mechanics You Hate/How You'd Change It

STAGGER

There's nothing that pisses me off about a fast-paced action game than losing control of my character.

A better mechanic imo would be disarming. When an ogre rampages or when you get hit hard your weapon gets knocked out of your hand and you have to retrieve it. That way you are still punished for poor play but you still maintain control over your character.

Kinda like the first Forsaken Fortress visit in Wind Waker.

I disagree, i think stagger is an excellent way to punish players for their mistakes.
If you fuck up, you should be punished.
In fact, you should be thankful for just being staggered, i'd basically make any enemy do enough damage to kill you in 1, or 2 hits.
You must play a level over and over until you never make mistakes, and be constantly punished for your mistakes.

However, i'd also give players tools to avoid actually getting hit.
Dodging in Bayo, or Bloodborne or so on.
Give the players solid tools to avoid damage, dodging, countering and so on.
I do agree that in DD those tools areā€¦limited, and imprecise.

Every game should kill the player extremely quickly or stunlock them if they fuck up, however at the same time it should also be fair and give the player plenty of tools to avoid fucking up in the first place.

Great idea, faggot.

Not entirely fuckwit, notice the

part.

Jump and regrab when the monster starts shaking, don't just hold onto them doofus.

You can just jump off, or be more careful about latching onto an aggressive ogre

And how would you be able to determine that? What if the enemy plants its fat ass on it with no way to grab it? What if it falls into pit? What if it lands on the other side of the field that you can't get to without running to the other side, ruining the flow of the fight. Your idea has holes in it and just saying "you can retrieve it" doesn't guarantee it when push comes to shove.

Came to post that the idea is to jump off, but others have gotten to it already.

I agree that taking control away from the player is one of, if not the, most frustrating things in modern games. Being punished is good, but taking control away means you don't know how much punishment you're going to receive, making it difficult to plan risk/reward.

Git good you fucking faggot

You don't even need to jump off completely, your character jumps pretty high while grabbing, so you can jump straight up and grab the monster again on the way down.

This method's even easier if you're playing a character that can double-jump, unless it's an elder ogre and it's going berserk

While it's rampaging, though? Isn't it better just just get off and wait for him to stop?

Well, why would you even climb a monster if you're not playing strider or assassin?

I've heard of warriors using climbing attacks but I haven't spent very long playing that vocation

Even if warriors' climbing attacks weren't complete shit (and they are) it looks pathetic and retarded as fuck, they just have a weak awkward animation of hitting the monster with the pommel of their weapon.

...

Ogres are very energetic and lewd in DDDA.

Imma need the sauce on DDDA to confirm. Science demands it.

How new are you? DDDA is the name of the game in the OP, Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen. also
This isn't reddit, you can directly ask for porn here.

they also kind of suck

Rythm-based movement. It gets tolerable at faster tempos, but holy fuck does it make the game tedious and hard on the wrist.

You suck and deserve to be killed

tell me about it, I can only play that shit for about an hour at a time.

your pawns literally shout out "they prefer attacking women!"

And this is why some people should never make videogames. You are basically saying if you make a mistake I will excessively punish you. You realize that making mistakes, and correcting them on your own is how you learn right?

how do you if you made a mistake if nothing happens after you make it? punishment is in order

Because taking control away from the player is not how you do it. If a player is killed/damaged whatever when they have no control over what is happening such your "Get staggered then killed in one or two hits." The player will correctly say your game sucks, and go play something else. Not because they died, but because they had any chance of input taken away. The way staggering works in most games like RPGs requires no skill, the player has learned nothing because you never gave them a chance.

how does cannon from mystic knight even damage, its supposed to do phys damage as well right? but I couldn't damage that shitty metal golem amulet on the tree with it and yes I'm certain I was hitting it

Make way, scrubs, or I'll pon pon pata pon.

Press turn in SMT 3&4/DDS1&2

Instant kills when failed drop 2 icons as if it missed.
Multiple hit attacks as well as losing the 2 icons for 1 hit missing will also lose an extra 1 for each consecutive miss (2 for 1 miss, 3 for 2 misses)
(SMT4 exclusive) Crits under the influence of smirk do not offer more icons and missing a smirked opponent doesn't take away additional icons

Also Smirk in SMT 4 and final
Removing it would be the only true way to improve it

There's such thing as too much punishment. Take Contra: Hard Corps. In the Japanese version, your character can take 3 hits before they die, and the game is designed and balanced around this. After each stage, your HP is replenished, so you can take 2 hits per stage without losing a life. The game is by no means easy, and having 3 hits is justified. However, in the US/EU version, it follows the normal Contra rules of 1 hit death, so the game is three times as punishing for taking a hit when the game is still designed/balanced around having 3 hit points. It'd be like if in Dark Souls they removed the estus flask, and healing could only be done at bonfires. That doesn't make the game harder; it makes it frustrating and a chore to play. Balance punishment accordingly.

Also looking again I realized you aren't the same person.

Why didn't you use some stamina curatives before running out? You could've also jumped off the ogre as it was flailing, or chugged one of those infinite stamina brews before engaging. You were just being a greedy faggot and you paid the price; quit being a DSP level scrub and git gud.

You are right about having no right to whine though

...

user stop being a scrub.

The parry-riposte mechanic in Demon's/Dark Souls is a disgrace.

Here's what they shoulda done instead

To fix parryable bosses, either make them immune to perfect parries or just make the perfect parry window extremely minor.

What? There is an awful lot of enemy diversity in DD.

"excessively" is relative.
Just make it so reacing the point where you died isn't a big deal.
Make a mistake, but then learn.
All i'm asking from the player is for him to learn QUICKLY, that's not especially unreasonable.
I give you all the tools you need to avoid, or counter damage.

You can use them to basically vastly ignore most of the damage in the game, all you need is good timing.
If you make a mistake, you die.
But you come back to where you died relatively fast, especially if you learned the patterns and layouts up to that point.

Memorization, pattern recognition, consequences for your fuckups, good had eye coordination.
I'm asking from the player more or less what any other video game asks out of you, i just ask you to be BETTER at video games and learn MORE QUICKLY compared to other games.
That's all.

Climbing is the single good thing in this entire shitfest though.

That is where you are messing up. But you probably don't mean it that way. If I take your words exactly you are saying if they make even one mistake ever, and you will make mistakes, just more so in the beginning the game kills them. Your scenario has no chance of recovering from a mistake, your idea of also coming back relatively fast, learning patterns, and layouts is also boring. There is nobody on this planet who can't beat something with repeated tries. A game the way you propose is not only boring, and repetitive it's also unchallenging even though you try to make it that way. You are basically making a shitty souls clone.

Now if you really want to make a challenging game you are correct in giving the player options. This is why morrowind will always be more of a challenge than the games after it in the same series. Most things are unleveled, but access to the tools, and items you need can be acquired with a little bit of effort. It helps to level the playing field quite a bit. Instead of putting so much into emphasis on punishing the player, design challenges for the player to overcome.

I hate action games that having "staggering" in them, like Ninja Gaiden. Don't get me wrong, getting hit should be pretty punishing, but there's no excuse in the world to take control away from the player and put him in a state where he can't move, block, or attack. That shit's annoying as hell.

I liked how Bayonetta handled player movement and damage responses. Getting hit cancels your attack but you're still completely mobile. The controls in Bayo are actually something to admire, really.

You still get 3 lives and 5 continues, plus extra lives over the course of the game, for 15+ tries at a 60-90 minute game. I think it's much better balanced than the HP plus infinite continues by default Japanese version.

that is an incredibly shit opinion newfriend

Don't get hit then. Problem solved. If you suck at a game you should be punished.

I posted that image the day shit was released, friend. DD is garbage.

What isn't garbage, then?

Dark Souls duh.

Casuals like you deserve the carpal tunnel

If you don't mean the first, you deserve to be disemboweled.

No. Removing Smirk and adding a defense state to 4/4A is fine, but Nocturne and DDS are balanced perfectly.

All you're doing is confirming you're more retarded than everyone thought

...

Level-scaling
Tie the scaling to in-game time, have the final boss be unbeatable if you take too long, and have him chastise the player for thinking the world would cater to the player.

DD is shit in itself, compared to anything or not.

...

A better fix for level scaling is to scale the entire game based on achievements with in, like beating a level 50 boss will rebalance the game around you being able to kill that.

Nice counter argument, kid.

Get a load of this faggot.

Why would I make a counterargument to something that isn't an argument in the first place? All of your complaints have to do with you either being bad at the game or an idiot or both

I wasn't actually try to redeem the mechanic. I was just make a mechanic that piss those faggots off. Your idea is still cancer.
If I actually wanted to fix this cancerous system, I would tie to quest completion.

...

...

Game is surprisingly slick when compared to most other games I know, specially compared to Dark souls of all things.
What do you mean? most small fries die in one to two hits, even when low level. The ones that are "damage spongy" are only damage spongy if you're truly weak, even more so, they not dying in 8 hits (again, like Dark Souls) is excellent for the difficulty.
I'll give you that, it's very confusing.
A bit bad for character customization, but, no problem at all in my opinion. Magic guy uses magic robes, buff knight uses knightly armor.
Fair enough. It gets repetitive quite quickly.
What do you mean? Having more damage means you also deal more damage? what is it inconsistent about it? your damage even grows linearly against the same enemy since their defense-to-damage-reduction is 1:1.

r u of baits

You press up, left, right or down and you move up, left, right or down relative to your character's position, what's confusing about it?

I'm retarded. It took me quite a while to finally realize that left and right serve to rotate your characters orientation, not his direction of movement while climbing. Lucky for me I didn't play any yellow class for long anyway.

All you had to do is let go. Its not like when you get grabbed and have to button mash to break free, in this case all you had to do was let go and you'd be free to smash shit sideways. And then you complain about being unable to move when you spent all your stamina trying to hold onto an ogre in futility. If it weren't for these mechanics, grabbing would be OP.

If anyone has a problem with the equipment limits and moveset limitations, I'd suggest they use CE scripts to disable them or change them at will.

How about just make this a DD thread? there's none in the catalog. And I recently bought it during the steam sale

>3/3/3 stars
>gifts me a rock
>nothing as a message, nada, even something rude so I could know they cared slightly
th-thanks

He posts that image in every DD thread.

I'm sure someone has the 8ch pawn spreadsheet, I don't personally use the pawn system at all, besides keeping my own around for eye candy

I like it. There aren't enough games with disarming as a mechanic. One of the best parts of Severance Blade of Darkness' combat, arguably the best sword and board combat of any game, is the way the parrying mechanics incorporate disarming.

Permadeath in Fire Emblem. I like the idea, it sounds good on paper, but it ultimately just leads to a bunch of shit. The problem is that any player will just restart when they lose anyone, and later games are even designed around this. It results in the enemies acting like suicidal dipshits because they KNOW that if they take out just one person, they win. I want to fight enemies who actually think like real people and not mindless hivemind-esque drones. I want battles that are difficult to win at all, not just difficult to win flawlessly.
I wouldn't remove the permadeath, but I just can't think of a way to solve the whole restart-if-anyone-dies problem. You'd have to redesign almost the entire structure of the games, I'd think.

The combat in that game is so fundamentally terrible that complaining about stagger seems pointless.

What's the best Mystic Knight build? Should I just go to Gran Soren and become MK right away or get some skills and perks from some other vocations first?

Not really though. I got DD due to friend recommendation who said it was good gameplay but kinda boring world.

I didn't know the remnant's of ddda were all gay for burly mustached dwarfs

I dropped DD after I beat the main game and got to BBI. I think I beat the Gazer and Pope/Dragon before I got sick of home damage spongy the enemies were. Wish the game would get a sequel though, it has several issues that if worked out could make it really great.

Are you one of those retards who actually like QTEs?

I love these games but holy fucking shit if the devs are not some of the biggest faggots making some of the attacks not "strong enough" to knock you over and still make you momentarily lose control of your character, enough to get yourself combo'ed.

I just got a rig capable of playing DDDA, so I decided to go in blind.
I just wanted to rend the fabric of space and time with my autism powers.

Wizzuhd pawns can mirror your spells.

You have to change class to Sorcerer if you want to fuck shit

Casters start out slow, you need to turn sorcerer and get like vocation level 7 before you get some fun spells.
Also there were better ways to deal with that tutorial cyclops. You'll find out later though.

Fair enough, I will change my vocation and switch to magic pawns.

do you have the original to that picture?

He's right though but even climbing sucks when it comes to certain enemies like those fucking dragons for an example but then again dragons are the weakest part of the whole fucking game.

DDDA on the other hand is just shit in all aspects and everyone who thinks it's actually better and how DD should be instead of the basegame should just fuck off and commit sudoku.

is that supposed to be a bad thing? didnt morrowind have shit like that? and New vegas? those games get fallated here all the time

...

its a giant fucking monster user, either get out of the way or block, wind currents are a bitch and so are quakes, the game is one where you have to memorize a monsters tells and combos so you know "oh i shouldn't be near this guy cuz he will combo my ass". you are 1v1ing a dinosaur don't expect it to be a fair fight. hell at high rank alot of monsters have moves that can one shot you if you dont increase your health bar.

i suppose you could also be a jew
