Installing the game

First, you actually want to get NWN, so go torrent NWN Diamond edition from Piratebay or something, this is generally the one you want, you don't want to piss about wuth DLing NWN stanalone then the expansions.

Win7 user will have trouble with installastion, so you need to follow this guide in order to ensure you don't mess up:

You may also suffer from issues involving non playing cutscenes in the start of campaign chapers when playing or chrome/silver skin at character creation.

The chrome skin issue is usually fixed by simply installing the critical rebuild 1.69 patch found here:

The non playing cutscene issue is caused by a number of different problems, but the first thing you must do is install Bink, found here:

Additionally, disable the shiny water option sound ingame, it's a shit, causes savegame bloat and crashes.

Now that you've pretty much installed NWN Diamond edition patched it and made sure you've got no issues, It's time to install the Premium modules, which you can find here:

So now, you've pretty much got all of the Vanilla content. Save for Darkness over Daggerford, which was cancelled.

Community patches/gameplay improvements

Here I will list mods that are to NWN what the Unofficial Oblivion patch is to Oblivion, you'll want to download these for sure.

A community patch for all those nasty bugs 1.69 didn't fix.

Also will merge data in you .2da folders togther rather tha overrite if you place them in a folder and run a batch file, so it works with just about anything, includign any installations of the PRC or other modifications you may have installed.

Lastly, there's the PRC, which is a mod that injects a buttload of D&D 3.5 classes and a shitload of other stuff for choice at character creation, amongst other things, such as sub-races that if you name at the begining of character creation, will be seen as their own race.

Before installing the PRC (And most mods anyway) you want this:

NWNCX extends what NWN can actually do, and is needed to select the PRC base classes at character creation.

Lastly you want something called Leto 1.69 PRC edition I think, for editing PRC characters and stuff.

Honestly, this is taken from an old guide I wrote on the subject as much has changed on the modding scene since then, as we now have a working mod manager that works in the same fashion as the Mod organiser for bethesda games, which is a godsend compared to drag'n drop Override files to NWN1.

There'd be more links to mods here, but they were all to the old neverwinter vault, whcih shut down and changed to a new site, so they no longer work, and their search engine is piss, so it's hard to fidn the old stuff.

Anyhow, the basic stuff you want is the game fully patched with cutscenes working then the community patch, the PRC being optional if you want it, as you have things like the CEP needed for Custom created modules to play, or persistant servers and whatever.

One more thing, most moduels want these massive fuckass collections of assets, one called the CEP, and the other Project q.

Get both, and also get the CEP 2.1 (An older version) as some modules use it, such as a Hunt through the dark, a popular series of Drow modules.

Oh right, and put the game's .exe's in compatiblity. for windows XP and run as Admin, that's one of the most important things.

There's also a Mod manager for installing mods now, which you can find on the nexus, it's a bit buggy now, but the author is open to bug report submissions.
It's a lot better than the manual method, anyhow.

It's D&D during the phase between 2e-3.5 anyhow, and there are three main campaigns and multiple DLCs, one of them is the infinite dungeon with Halaster, and there was an unfinished main capaign called shadow over daggerford which took more Baldur's gate esque aspects into it, but It wasn't finished and was released for free later on, which is really sad, as It was really danm good.

It's a pain in the ass to patch and install the PrC compendium but it's fun to play.

There are persistent servers even past this, for Raveloft settings or Runescape like open worlds and stuff.

OK, I checked the GOG page – Free copies do get you a CD Key, which pirated copies don't. And even though the server browser is dead (direct connect by IP is fine), you do need a valid CDKey to access multiplayer.

most common multiplayer you see is PW (persistent worlds) – these are like a graphical version of a text MUD. usually cap at 32/64 players, people grind to kill mobs, do repeatable quests, hang out in the inn and talk shit. yknow, MUD stuff. Not my favorite, but always available.

When neverwinterconnections was still around, a lot of us did regular D&D sessions in NWN, using the game client instead of pen & paper or something like tabletop simulator. This was pretty great because a DM can possess characters and talk through them, or order monsters around kind of RTS style.
If anybody remembers Twoflower from The Hex Coda or his other fan modules, he used to DM with us sometimes. (More like we'd talk him into guest starring as some crazy NPCs, or something. Great guy.)

the funny thing is most PWs I fooled around with tried to ape Ultima Online more than anything, adding in extensive resource gathering and crafting. NWN combat isn't all that great if that's all you have to do on a server.

I'm going to see if I there's enough interest out there in some of the old haunts to maybe get some sessions running. If there is, and people on Holla Forums are into it, then I'll let people here know.

If you might be interested, follow those installation instructions, get patched up, go look around neverwintervault.org/ to see what kind of user content is out there. IMO the difference between running vanilla NWN and playing CEP (Community Expansion Pack) content is pretty high as far as visual quality. It's never going to be a pretty game, but you can do some cool shit in the toolkit.

Please note that if you are new to NWN, do not bother with the base campaign (other than maybe the tutorial to learn the UI). Start with Shadows of Undretide, then look for some high rated user modules on neverwintervault.

as mentioned previously, NWN without serial numbers is a single player game and thus half the game. Direct connect to a server via IP still requires you to have CDKeys.

On topic, just wanted to point out some examples of the kind of features that mod authors have scripted into the game over time. Just from a quick search, Guile is still making content:

what's interesting about that? The idea of a base module is that you don't have to integrate a dozen different scripting addons into your code by hand, you can start in a blank module with them installed. A lot of these are "DM Helpers", some can be used by players as well.
For example, a DM Forge means that rather than have to build a custom magic item in the toolset and then manually import the file, you can create an item with the desired properties through a dialog menu.
This one also contains Scarface's Persistent Chest, which is a player storage / bank feature.
There are lots of these systems out there, this is just one example.

The original campaign was a mess, but the expansion packs more than made up for it.

The campaign is shit, the game itself is great, and provides tools for player-made modules (iirc, for reference, the OG campaign is divided into 4 modules and a prologue/tutorial) not counting the ones that already exist.
First expansion is kinda meh, second is great.

True, but the problem is that unless you find a good keygen for it, you'll probably not get good multiplayer support. Grabbing it on GoG means you get it for free and get a unique key both legitimately.

the master servers for NWN have been down for literally years. it doesn't matter which key you use as long as nobody on the server you're connecting to has the same one (and even then my roommate and I had no problems)

That's the biggest problem I noticed with the torrents is that they use all the same key. It's pretty easy to do multiplayer especially with the key DRM gone, but it sucks when you just want to get a group of people in the same server and the torrents only supply one key.

The online RP servers are actually pretty cool for this game. Literally the only reason I paid money for it after pirating.

also, I can't host it myself even though I have a copy of the module because the server relied on NWNX to increase the +20 attack bonus/saves cap and the +12 ability score bonus from items. Plus, without NWNX, there would be no database support which means no persistent storage chest or player housing, and it would probably mess up Legendary Levels.

I have no idea how he had NWNX set up for Netheria. Motherfuck, that module is a technical marvel in NWN scripting.

I at least know how to host the OC/HotU and the Quartz Emporium module, which is an item shop the former admin also had up in addition to the OC and HotU. I can also establish a server portal between the two so you can buy stuff from the Emporium and bring it back to the campaigns.

It's based on controlling one individual character rather than managing a whole group at once. It's also a lot more refined as a whole than NWN2 even if NWN2 is graphically better and has more of an open world element.

heads up for those who would like to play the game windowed and at a higher resolution. In the ini you have to add the 'AllowWindowedMode=1" rule to the Display Options section, then set the "Fullscreen=1" option to 0. Also make sure you run the game in a resolution that is smaller than your native resolution (i.e. if you're running 1080p you should do 1600x900 or something) or the game will just revert to fullscreen.

The SerialTool.exe comes loaded with some placeholder CDkey so if you don't replace it with your unique key, and two people try to connect to the server at once, you'll be unable to join because "that key is already in use on this server"

to be 100% clear, in the game's main folder you'll get a nwncdkey.ini and a program called SerialTool.exe. the cdkey.ini has three keys that are identical to the ones inside the SerialTool program to start with. If you log into your GOG account, go to your library, select the game, there should be an option to view your specific keys. You have to use the ones from your account, I think.

I just created a throwaway e-mail address and fed it that. However, since the game's servers are long gone, you can probably give it your actual e-mail address without worrying about anyone giving a shit.
You could also try leaving the e-mail field blank, but I don't know if that will work.

NWN is the Thief1+2 of RPG's, there are new fan modules coming out every other month.

Server needs to be put on some PW module or reset. Low level players can't do shit atm.

We can always implement a script to allow the necromancers to use their corpses.

When I was on chapter 3 was halfway through, wait for it to end now then load up Shadows of Undrentide, that one is more low-level friendly than the OC.

we've got 3 players on now including myself, and the enemies in chapter 3 aren't too tough for that many people. Except the mini bosses and things like that.

I meant IRL, but yeah, I've been meaning to try getting an online game together again and hope it won't fall apart again when I have the time too.

Neverwinter Connections at its peak had hundreds of users. Right when it started I got some crappy little module together together where you had to go figure out what happened to a caravan that got wrecked by goblins, which would of course include "how did some shitty little goblins kill so many people". That was how I met the gang that we ran with.
Our crew had two full time DMs and usually we could get 2-3 other ones to fill in, so you might have 2 DMs and six players, or four DMs and eight players.
Twoflower had made a series of adventures that were kind of based on Discworld, and he decided he wanted to do some that didn't involve all the work involved in scripting and writing dialog trees, so he asked us to help out. I remember one adventure he ran where the PCs were running security for a concert some NPC bard ran, and all hell broke loose. TF was great at coming up with interesting characters and just going all out in playing them to the hilt, so when he felt like doing it but didn't want to run a game, we'd do our best to include a NPC he could use.

Off the top of my head, some of our campaigns:
Menhir Plains, which was the caravan adventure extended out into a campaign that ran for months. Eventually the party had to rebuild and pretty much run the village and nearby keep. Lots of the worldbuilding came from PCs that had played through the modules previously.
Pitchforks was a Ravenloft type thing that one of our other DMs ran, lots of paranoid suspicious villagers and lycanthropes around.
Songs of the Wine-Dark Sea was another friend's campaign we'd help out with, that was Roman themed, the PCs shipwrecked on an island with literally no supplies (like, go dig around to find some broken wood on the shore and the DM would give you a club you made from a board), ended up eventually getting back to civilization and all kinds of crazy shit breaking out. One of the PCs was from a prosperous family so the DM ended up making their whole estate part of the big city they got to after escaping, there was a murder mystery at a dinner party, lots of crazy shit.

NWConnections ended up setting up a DM Training program so for months there we ran weekly or biweekly classes where people who wanted to run a game in could come in and we'd practice using DM tools, give them some tips, let them work on setting up scenes, things like that. Our head DM was listed #1 on the list for almost as long as the site listed, he was really a workhorse. He's the one I'm hoping to get back into this shit if we can get something going.

That sounds pretty great tbh.

Base NWN creature AI is not great. The most common way people tried to fix it was with extensive, hard to debug AI scripts that tried to take every possible situation into account.
We instead said "fuck it", and controlled the enemy manually, basically PVPing against the party. After a while we realized how colossally unfair this was, but the parties who survived really enjoyed it.
So for example if we were running 3 DMs, one might be playing a NPC that's working with the party, one handling ambience and narration, and one running the enemy encounters. My favorite trick was to have a cultist caster hiding behind cannon fodder goblins or zombies, and let the AI run the melee combats while I threw heals and attacked the party's weaker members. (When you possess a NPC you can customize their action bar just like you would a PC's so you can just fn-key their spells.)
We were pretty unrepentant back then about abusing the D&D system until it bent but not broke, so for example I'd make creatures with many more HP than they should have for their CR, but much lower damage output. This would make fights go on for longer and helped people react before they were overrun. We'd usually have some oh-shit ability that did good damage but had a windup or some other kind of visual cue.

I mean, yeah, I can get the Ooze domain with the Prc, for my cleric along with Juiblex's other domains and level his thrall class to 8 or 9, and i'd have all the uses of oozy touch, Juiblex's version, infinite slimes, slime control, debuffing, and polymorhping.

A.I only needs to be made to follow monster strats found in the 3.5 monster manuals, usually.

Though I think the fat-ass CEP and Project NWN or whatever it was called may have script based resoruces too, failing that, take the random encounters sytem from darkness over daggerford and flesh it out more.
