My point is that the steel itself is not a huge part of price for complex products like this. There are probably some cases where the tariffs make a bigger difference but I have a feeling in terms of total cost of final products, it's not a big deal at all.

I didnt see that. But i did read that the competitive markets had forced US steel companies to invest a lot into efficiency. In the last decade or so production went from 10 man hours of work to refine 1 ton of steel to .5 man hours. This steel is from recycling i'm sure its still much more time consuming and expensive to get iron from ore and then refine it to steel. It may be interesting to look into whether this will affect how much of our scrap goes to China and how much stays at home. Youre probably right about steel tariffs not hitting us so hard in our individual pockets. Especially because plastics are so prevalent in our cars, steel is more of a construction material.

This theory would argue against tariffs being put at national borders though. Money going from Michigan to California would impoverish Michigan under this theory. This theory is not true. The money doesn't have to stay put. Money might be leaving the country/region but you are receiving something in return. Wealth isn't leaving. From what I saw from steel making documentaries, steel production usually involves both raw ore and recycled steel. They melt the iron ore then pour it over recycled steel. They can also melt recycled steel directly in an electric arc furnace. So yeah it should reduce the amount of exported recycled steel which would reduce the profit in the return trip to china.

Now, if you think that we've reached peak jobs, and that people who get laid off due to outsourcing will never produce anything of value, then it would be a problem, but I don't accept that.

One legit critique of outsourcing though is that some companies do it when they shouldn't - and it doesn't even make them money (like hiring black women doesn't make them money, but they still do it). The quality produced in foreign countries is sometimes just so shit that it's actually a poor trade off and purchasing more expensive local products is better (I actually purchase a lot of local products, in fact I'd probably pay more for American steel, but that's just me) but that's just an incidental problem, in principle outsourcing is not an inherit problem.

Herein lies the crux of your misunderstanding. In economic theory humans are interchangeable worker units until the day they retire, when in reality humans get more effective at a specific task but lose neuroplasticity - the ability to adapt - over time. What outsourcing does is remove entire fields from the local economy. You can't just up and get another job if your entire profession just got eliminated. Furthermore, if your entire surrounding area is heavily reliant on a single industry, that industry dying leaves you with a fuckload of expensive, extensive infrastructure that is no longer needed, but you can't afford to repurpose without substantial external investment. The workers fall into poverty, the markets relying on a well off workforce die and leave the area - along with job opportunities; their kids - who would normally be perfectly able to learn an entirely new profession - are instead stuck in a ghost town of a shithole. Moving is expensive, and a risk. Many end up essentially starting over as immigrants elsewhere in the country. Look no further than the Appalachians or the rustniggerbelt to see this process in action.

Gradually people leave the place and find work elsewhere, but it's not the instantaneous, fluid process you imagine in your head. You can argue that these are purely circumstantial factors as far as economic theory is concerned, and you would be right. Economics is just applied game theory and relies on the accuracy of the world model you're using for its predictions. The worldmodels used by most economists today do not account for factors like I described above, so their theories fail to properly predict the real world consequences of certain policies.

The biggest impact on unemployment rates has clearly been general economic health, not free trade. NAFTA was signed in 1994. The bubble busts of 2000 and 2008 have been the biggest incidents leading to unemployment recently.

What really happened is China could not compete with American steel because we had modern factories, better transportation infrastructure, and a highly skilled workforce. So they put huge tariffs on our goods in order to begin penetrating their domestic market, and that got them their start.

An example will show how silly this idea is. Let's say Chinese steel is 1% cheaper than American. Is your GDP going to shrink more if you put a 2% tariff on steel imports, causing a 1% rise in an input of some of your industries, or if you lose billions of dollars per year in steel manufacturing from your GDP?

If the Chinese steel costs half as much, maybe you let it happen that way. But this is a cuck-libertarian pipe dream in most cases, the lower input costs almost never stimulate more production than the production you lost. Which is why libertarian nationalism is superior.

I've seen advertisements as high as $60/hr, but I'm pretty sure that's the extreme upper end in only a few shops. But there's plenty of work here, and probably competitive pay with wherever you are now.

US metal production will go up. The US's biggest current export is scrap metals, and that's only because it's literally cheaper to ship them to China so the chinks can refine them for us and then ship the resulting products back to the US and make a tidy profit because they use slave labor. They also ship those metals to Chinese-owned and run holding companies in Canada so that they can also sell them to the USA.

The USA is incredibly rich in iron and the various alloying elements needed to make high quality steel out of it, but again because the Chinese and various other third world countries like Australia (with Chinese labor sometimes kek) can produce them cheaper it has driven our local mines out of business due to the global economy and free trade.

With strong tariffs suddenly it's cheaper to take scrap metals and drive them on a truck to the local refinery rather than shipping it all the way across the world and back. Also the mining industry will benefit tremendously as it becomes cheaper to produce fresh new steel from US iron and chrome / vanadium / etc.

I just want to be clear $60/hr is rare, $20s and $30s/hr is pretty common though depending on your experience. I get no shortage of offers whenever I'm bored or curious and send out applications, just don't want to "job hop". I can't find the infograph, but machinist is also one of the whitest jobs in the country, I rarely have to deal with coloreds, the few I do are pretty well behaved. You two probably already know that, but hint hint to younger anons looking for a decent paying career that's proven heavily resistant to niggerizing. Automation isn't really a threat to us since the field is already automated and there's still so much demand for people.
