AUTOMATED PDF DIGGING
This is a method I used to dig Hillary's emails you may find useful.
-Requires Linux type Operating System
-Ensure you have pdftotext installed
-Put list of pdf URLs into a file, one URL on each line.
-Save as allpdfs.txt
-Run following command from terminal:
for i in `grep -E '^htt.*\.pdf$' allpdfs.txt`;do foo=$(basename $i);wget $i; pdftotext -r 300 $foo; rm $foo; done
It will get each pdf by its URL in the allpdfs.txt file, change it into a text file (scanning it at 300dpi), save it with the name of the pdf, but with extension txt.
For example, if a line in the file "allpdfs.txt" contains:
some.website.com/a/b/c/d/grab_this.pdf
the output would be
grab_this.txt
which is a text conversion of the pdf document.
The original pdf is deleted to save space (remove the "rm $foo;" part if you want to keep the original pdf too).
CAVEATS: Obviously pictures are ignored. Transformations may include spelling mistakes, especially for scanned pdfs, and depends on document clarity.

DIGGING
Now you have a text version of your pdfs you can simply search them all with grep

Now if I want only a list of the files that contain the match, I use the -l option:

I can also use this command to reverse search in the file with the all the email URLs, and get a list of all URLs matching the B1 keyword:

the problem with these is half of the documents are scanned in such a shitty way (sideways, heavily redacted,etc) that it's difficult for OCR programs to be of much use. I'm sure it's intentional in order to fuck with OCR. These are emails, they obviously have the digital versions, but instead the print them out and scan them at random angles.

actually this gives me an idea, this shit was censored out clearly… but the space that was occupied by what was censored does not appear to have been changed. this could be bruteforced maybe. emails are hard because they aren't words, unless you have a massive list of valid domain names, words on the other hand could very well be brute forced with a dictionary containing all dictionary words and common names.

with a small 10,000 word english dictionary wordlist, two words took 100s. 3 words is going to take 10,000x longer, so 1,000,000s, so about 11 days. this is only on one core, in python, as a proof of concept. it could probably be sped up 5-10x written in C, and then multi-threaded.

3 words would be feasible, 4+ words is going to get stupid. even with the speedups, turning 11 days into 1, tack on 10,000x for 4 words.

i don't know if i'm going to spend the time on this, but i did come up with something interesting to deal with this 64 million combination problem.

everything I've been able to find points to this.
jewgle has datamined all of their books, and released what are called ngrams (wasn't aware of the term until today).

an ngram is just a combination of words that occur together. "ceiling fan" is a two word ngram, which occur together a lot in their scans naturally, "ceiling indian" is also an ngram, but does not occur, because it doesn't make sense and nobody wrote it in the books they've scanned.

instead of bruteforcing dictionaries together and restricting by character count, what can be done is:
-download all of the ngram data, or some (it's a terabyte)
-insert into a more efficient database with character counts to search later
-search the new ngram database filtered by character count and sorted by ngram count (number of times the ngram appears, what google provides).

this should create something far more usable. the problem is the massive database size, and searching a massive database that size is also a huge performance problem, but not as bad as bruteforcing. it may take 60 seconds to run a query, it won't take 10000 years.

alternatively wikipedia is another large plaintext data source, you can download the entire wikipedia database, filter it for plaintext, generate the ngrams yourself, and then do the same thing. who knows how long that would take. but there's already some tools out to do this so the whole wheel doesn't have to be re-invented.

is this something that's even worth working on? the end-result would give you a good idea of the possibilities for wording inside X characters, but then again so can common sense.

I had originally tried to see if they put the redactions as overlaid graphics into the pdfs. Thus with a bit of hex editing in the pdf binary I would be able to make the graphics invisible and reveal the text underneath. This turned out to be unfruitful.

to get this solution going it's going to be 2TB+ of database's (google and the new character count sorted database), plus 3 weeks of cpu time to generate the new database.
