Yeah, half a decade odd ago we had a massive flood that cut off most transport across the state of Queensland. Within two days the supermarkets were clear and people were panicking. FINALLY, the whole process takes TIME. fast growing crops like radishes may be ready in a month or so. most garden crops take 2-3 months minimum.

Don't buy MREs, they're expensive, bulky and gross. If you want cheap food storage, buy dried beans and rice, and along with seasonings/spices store it in sealed buckets with o2 absorbers (hand warmers). Otherwise, canned food lasts forever and you can get it on sale, and have actual meat; or you can dehydrate food into field rations. Use the money you saved to stock up on water, gas/generator, bullets, and most importantly, toilet paper.

Cans do last a long time though. There's been tests where they measured cans that were well past their expiration date. At 2 or 3 times their date, none were contaminated. Some cans from 19th century Arctic expeditions were found and tested, still safe. Cans are fine as long as your storage conditions are good, and they're not dented, bulging, or leaking.

For the incredulous reading this; the UK is set up differently to America. The village/town format means at least 80% of people live within 5 minutes walk or drive from a shop. In all but the most rural areas it's normal to go to the shops every day or every other day, and to keep less than 2 days worth of food in the house.

I expect the fact that there are stores within 500 metres of any residence in a city is a deliberate effort to reduce the self-sufficiency instinct and increase reliance on and trust in the system. We are trained to "pop to the shops" on the way home and not stock up.
