The commando units were outlawed in the late 90's, but it seems that private security forces have taken their place. From what I've gathered it seems that private security is one of the biggest industries in South Africa, so I imagine that it wouldn't be difficult for farmers to find and contract security. The main problem they face is the quality of security the farmers are getting with these hired security forces, I'd imagine a lot of them are shit.
