Our gun laws are overkill, it's more annoying to have one these days. Licencing is a pain in the arse, you have to wait for ages to file your application for a licence and a reason to have one (Primary production, target shooting, employment even paintball.) It's all well and good to have the licence but you have to be vigilant of when it expires because the local cops will report it straight away within 24 hours of expiry.

You do have to do a gun safety course, which are limited and in high demand at the same time, I've missed out on it twice because at the time I lived hundreds of kms from Adelaide. (IMO I think the safety course is probably a good thing in a sense because undesirables couldn't be bothered doing the course anyhow)

Most people who handle and use firearms legally in Australia think that the laws are a complete crock of shit. Just that the voting block are majority city dwellers who have little idea on how firearms work, finding them scary, ignoramous.

This doesn't seem to be in the news anywhere, but it seems like a pretty important breadcrumb linking the shooting to the highest levels of the federal government.
