Shhh! That's every artist secret! Take from 2+ references while you're at it.

That's "referencing", which is only slightly better.
Boot up one of the lessons, press up or down on the D-Pad, and there'll be multiple canvases to gently help you go from full tracing to free-form referencing.

I don't really do lessons.
I just repeat the process of: draw rough sketch on base layer, hop up a layer and refine it and then just draw it again on the bottom layer. I do this with the thing that i draw, anything that is before the thing that i draw so i can draw over the base thing, then add detail and then shadows. A drawing like that takes from 10 mins to half an hour, but since i put effort into it i like looking them back several times.

and then i realized I can't draw hair at all, or eyes that are more than ', or.. or anything, really.
First thing I'd do if I got a time machine is beat myself for not practicing drawing at all, I don't want to make anything impressive, I just want to be able to make cute doodles of cute anime girls and think to myself 'yeah, that's cute'

I barely have an understanding on anatomy and can't draw women at all. No way in hell im gonna draw lewds. Its gonna look fucking horrible.

I either hit up some picture on my pc or draw shit from whatever i see in real life like artbooks or magazine covers. A good example is the murmillo helmet that i copied off of one of my archeology magazine. I didn't trace it at all, and i redrew the entire thing in parts atleast 10 times. iirc that took like 30 mins.

Not to be rude, but most people here aren't great artists to begin with and won't have a lot to say improve your shit, so most feedback will level down to a "wow, das a gud pic :)" like this . You'd be flooded with replies and virtual upvotes, if that's what you want.
I'd generally don't like to critique people's art without their permission first (due to some people reacting badly in the past) and here I don't take the time to doodle a reply to every note anyway.

I used PhotoME.
Export the exif of one image (a valid screenshot you already have) and import it to the one you want.
Make sure it's jpeg, a valid size, and clear the new one of any metadata as well.

You can only use screens of specific games. The most obvious ones being New Leaf and Smash Bros.
So even if you have Senran screens, you can't use them through normal means.

mines a bit of a special case, so I dont know exactly how it got fixed, or if itll help you, but here goes a list of what I did.

I have a german O3DSXL with cfw.
I downloaded swapdoodle from the EUR freeshop, and tried the CIAngel input.text fix, but that did ntohing.
I deleted all the swapdoodle files, and reinstalled, did nothing.
Deleted and reinstalled swapdoodle, this time I loaded another dlc file I found. ill upload it to mega or something
After loadining it up with FBI it finnally worked.
Im gonna guess that it worked because of that last part, but im not sure if you need to do everything else I did.

Don't complain too much if the Mallow doodle looks awful.

I've noticed the ink underneath doesn't erase itself if you draw over it. So if you don't erase it first you'll waste your meter.
On the bright side, if you can draw good on a 3DS you can draw great anywhere.

Yea, I wasted a bunch of ink making eyes when I drawing the eyes of this anime girl with a question mark over her head.
I did the lineart, then colored over the pupils, redid the pupils, added white for highlights, outline the eyes, color over the pupils and the lines, and then doing the outline, pupils, and highlight again.
I wasn't able to color anything else in that doodle set, despite wanting to.

Any suggestions at where to start to actually get decent at drawing? Outside of the 3DS is fine, and probably necessary for starting out.

Would be great if you could clear particular colours only, or if there was a layer function like there is for drawing lessons.

Also can you edit drawings that someone else has sent? Because the white pen would be neat as a form of invisible ink. Just change the background or pen colour to read it!

You can copy a page of a note that you're replying to and edit it, including changing pen colors (but the background is always pure white). Something I want to try is hiding something under the 3D layer. It'd be like a spoiler but you can see it before/without posting a reply.

Any tips for getting quicker? On a side note i'm noticing that i look at the references less and less and i started playing around with shading/"coloring". The ink is barely enough.

Back to the subject, i could do 2 versions, one basic and one shaded, but that would clog up twice as much space, or could ask people which version they want, but honestly maintaining that list would be a little bit too much logistics and management for me. The core issue is that i feel as if the doodle would be too empty with only the outlines, and sometimes by my own fault i mix shading and "colorization" in one doodle which makes it very hard to distinguish between the two. Since i don't really do actual colorization like others i mostly stick to gray/black and white to emphasize with at best 2 colors mixed in. This makes the colors very eye catching.

Like, let's say you are experimenting with stuff and you are on your way to learn how to get better, then me calling it shit(it literally looks like a mess) would be a request to streamline it, which isn't exactly good. But your current way of shading is shit. Maybe try using a bigger sized pen? 3D layers as means for easier coloring\shading? Parallel lines to represent coherent shading?

Mario's Picross is great, but I find it really hard to go back to a cursor once I've found the light of touch screen controls.
Pokemon picross's bullshit currency can be bypassed via a save edit, giving you 0xFFFF picrites or whatever the fuck they're called. The interface for selecting levels in that game is counter-intuitive, but other than that it's an amazing entry. Have you not played the Picross E titles? There's 6 of them (7 if you're nip), with increasing amounts of content

I can't really get into the touch controls, being used to cursor so much.
The only guide I find I think is outdated. Something about PASLR security in systems 11.1 and above. Not sure if luma patches that out or if there are other save editing methods.
Downloaded them all yesterday and started with the first. I kinda dislike they hint by highlighting the numbers where something can be changed, as opposed to pokemon picross where it's presented as a pokemon's power if you want to use it.

Unsure about the save security, I used JKSM to export the save, edited it with a hex editor, then imported the save back into the game with JKSM. I don't remember what line you have to edit, but it can't be hard to find
Yeah, the ? navigation and the hint roulette are just plain cheating, as well as using time mode instead of free mode. Those can be freely turned on and off in most levels IIRC. And E1 is lacking the most content, so it won't take long to finish it.

To be honest i kind of have a soft spot for rougher, grittier styles, though it is in no way an excuse.
Since i fucked and didn't ask what firmware was on it when i bought my 3ds, i can't into CFW.
I suspect that it would look better simply by using a lighter gray but i'm not to keen on dropping money on it in the future, outside of maybe the other premium pack for the extra ink and storage.
All in all i'll try a few different methods next week and establish a somewhat regular schedule or plan and start posting again.

Swap note has no native screenshot function as far as I can tell, you'd need external software for that. Otherwise I'd recommend checking the manual.

NTR (some hack thing you can use with CFW) can take screenshots but that has problems with updated 3DS firmware, and the author refuses to release source code. The other options are 3DS capture mod, or just to photograph the screen.
